It’s an iPhone without the phone, for people who don’t want a monthly cell bill. They use WiFi only.

Or think of it like a mini iPad mini :)
Sure... do they exist? My friends and family members wouldn’t even buy this for their kids. They want to be able to text/call their kids at any time.
Maybe it’s just me being unable to understand the need for this.

If Apple managed to throw in FaceID and price the bezel-less iPod Touch at a reasonable price? That would be a shocker. But I wouldn't count on FaceID or a reasonable price tag since it's Apple we are talking about here.

Do people who don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars a year on a cell phone bill exist? Out of the billions of people in the world? Yeah, there are a couple lol.

Ok, I can see that. But wouldn’t you rather have an Apple Watch, which is perfect for running; much smaller and tracking more things?
It’s a good point, and particularly with the built in HRM and GPS, but I just like the iPod formfactor. Besides a series 4 is at least twice the price and I have no other use for it.

why is macrumors getting stung by so many fakes? rush to be "first".

Ehh it’s really not a big deal since these rumor sites post unproven articles everyday. This story and the AirPods2 were disproven very quickly, but there are articles everyday that are posted with fake info that we can’t prove or deny.

Damn this is the 2nd time this week, c'mon man ― I had suspicions when 9to5 didn't post this, and that it was found by someone unknown

Just speculating, it is a rumor anyway...

What about if this (presumed) iPod 7th Generation is Cook's replacement for the iPhone SE (sans cellular)?

Think like Cook:
Everything the SE2 should have been, without cellular modem.
And, absent the danger to cannibalize Cook's treble of high-priced, cellular-enabled phablets.

I’ve long speculated that the iPod Touch could become a low cost iPhone without a phone plan. In my case however, I would see a cellular iPod like the LTE iPad with a built in eSIM for data.

Users wouldn’t have to sign up for a phone plan and could instead just buy data directly from the device.

While they wouldn’t have a phone number, these days most people communicate via apps for both texting and voice/video conversations. Phone numbers are on the verge of being made obsolete.

This would be the perfect device to give to your children and could for some adults, replace their iPhone entirely.

It's a shame that this was fake since an iPod Touch 7th generation with a bigger screen, similar dimensions and an A11 would've been a great upgrade to my iPod Touch 5.

Heck, I would've bought such an iPod Touch 7th on the day it arrived in my country assuming they keep the same price (or slightly higher) for the base model.

I think that the a large portion of current Touch sales are by businesses that use the Touch as a point of sale.

I doubt these businesses are interested in a replacement that is an iPhone.

What’s stopping it from still serving that function? I have an LTE iPad that I no longer pay for data and it works just fine and if you disable cellular in the settings you don’t get the no SIM card message.

I went through the entire gamut of emotion in the time that it took to call this out as fake.

I do agree with you. It certainly would be to Cook's liking as it would not endanger his well-protected margins.

The only caveat to this model would be the absence of service when outdoors, esp. in an emergency.
And, of course, the absence of GPS navigation and location-awareness without the triangulation offered by WiFi towers.

Cellular still rules where packet-based, wireless networks are absent.

An icon has been shared on social media this morning that purportedly references Apple's next-generation iPod touch. The image below was shared by self-described tech product leaker Jonathan Mitchell, who claims to have unearthed the icon in iOS 12.2 Beta 4.

The icon labeled "HLSipod2" on the right is shown beside the existing icon for Apple's current-generation iPod touch, suggesting that an unreleased seventh-generation iPod touch will inherit the design elements of Apple's flagship all-screen iPhones and do away with the Home button.

That said, the device in the icon doesn't have a notch and it also appears to be off-center, which could mean that it's being used by Apple as a placeholder in the iOS 12 beta. Either that, or it's not genuine at all.

In January, developer Steven Troughton-Smith discovered references in iOS 12.2 to an "iPod 9,1," which does not match up with any known iPod touch devices, suggesting it is a new next-generation model. However, the iPod listing in iOS 12.2 does not appear to have Face ID or Touch ID.

Last month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said he expects a new iPod touch with a faster processor to launch in 2019, but Kuo made no mention of a possible redesign for the device.

Apple last updated the iPod touch in July 2015, and in July 2017 the company cut prices and reduced the number of storage capacity options.

Update: Developer and frequent iOS beta explorer Guilherme Rambo says "there is no such icon on iOS."

Nothing is preventing it but these companies look like they want a non-phone point of sale device.

Otherwise, they would have already been using a cheap phone without a sim.

I understand your point but I’m still going to disagree with you, I don’t think it would matter as long as the POS companies make new versions of the cases for the device.

I think that they don't want to give the employees the option of inserting a SIM and using it as a phone.

In any case, I think that the only way we will see a SIM in a new device is if it is an iPhone (possibly an SE2).

Any Touch redesign will make it as cheap as possible. We will probably on see a new processor, a better camera, and more RAM (I doubt it will even have touch id). I predict that it will have a 4.7" screen which will allow a bigger battery to handle the increased power demand.

So why would anyone believe anything “Jonathan Mitchell” says again?

Why would he put something fake out there knowing it would of course be proven false and forever kill his reputation.

Buy for what? Don’t you have music in your iPhone already?
Well it is simple for me, I do not have an iPhone (happily running a Xiaomi here) so it is nice te keep with the iOS ecosystem (yes i have na iPad pro as well but I like ssomething more portable).

Then there is the audio aspect, hopefully the iPod retains the HP Jack (not against the quality aspect of the bluetooth, but to me an audio device should offer as many connectivity option as possible).
Also I do not want to bring my phone when powerwalking, so an iPod would be great.

All in all I think an iPod suits myneeds so that's why :D
