If your kid is spending 6-8 hours a day on his iPad Mini then I think you need to be a lot less concerned about what tablets his friends play with and start worrying about your parenting skills. It's incredible you're even bragging about it.
Advice. Take his tablet away and give him a soccer ball.

Thanks for the advice. :) I was referring to school and home combined. Our school district has a BYOT initiative, he uses the iPad in at least 2 classes, Algebra and Science. BTW, got him the TI - Nspire CAS Algebra app ($5) which is just awesome and replaced his handheld TI unit that I paid $140. He plays Clash of Clans, and other games at night instead of watching TV, like most kids. FYI: he has 6 A's, and 1 B academically, and is taking 2 AP level courses.

My point was the iPad's get used much more often than the Android hardware because of the Eco-system. Now we can all argue when the competitors are going to catch up to iOS, but at the moment, I don't see it happening this year.

Granted, The Android tablets suck ass. But judging by the amount of time your son spends on his iPad, it sounds more like you are in need of parrenting advice, than his friends are in need of iPads. No offence intended.

Given that Apple is the sole developer of iOS devices while there are multiple Android devs, isn't this article basically saying, "More companies will inevitably outproduce one."?

+1. hundreds of companies that produces Android Tablets/Phones and just 1 Apple. hmmm now i know why.

i bought a Nexus 7 awhile back thinking that i will love it for it's functions and price. no wow factor when i held it in my arms. maybe i am not a droid fan. sold it after 2 weeks and bought myself an ipad mini. just going to the apple store got me so excited. more so when i opened my ipad mini. WOWWWW.

So let me get this straight. Your kids school district uses Tablets in the class and that's where he's spending his time using his tablet but "his friends" don't use their Android Tablets at school and if they don't then what do the rest of the kids do that don't have tablets?

BYOT and they have to use it for school and homework but the other kids that don't have tablets dont?

Why do I find this a little strange?

He's a hockey player (defense) plays on 2 teams and is a leading scorer on one of them. Besides (forgot to add) Soccer sucks! :D

Comparing iPad to Android is like comparing iPad to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, Samusung, HTC, and every other tablet manufacturer who uses the Android OS.

OF COURSE "Android" will overtake Apple in the tablet market!
Multiple manufacturers fighting for the the lowest price will always outsell a single manufacturer not as concerned about low prices.

I'm not addresing quality here.
For you die-hard old-school fans - before Apple was "popular", did you use their computers because they were cheaper? Were you concerned about their marketshare? Heck no!

A smaller footprint in a market flooded by inferior products shouldn't get anyone worked up (and I'm not saying all the Android prodcuts are inferior, either).

I have yet to use an android tablet I liked

I have yet to use an iOS device that I liked.

Anyway. The only tablet OS that I'm looking forward to is the forthcoming tablet version of Ubuntu. At this point, Canonical is the only company that has a clear vision of the future - and that vision is especially interesting in second and third world countries (which are the next mass markets). ONE device with ONE software platform that scales from the phone factor over the tablet factor to the desktop. THAT is where the journey is headed. And it's amazing to see how the big players like Google, Microsoft and Apple very apparently miss that development.

So he uses his iPad mini for 6-8 hours a day (2 hours at school) and is on 2 hockey teams which implies practice and still has time for 4-6 hours on his iPad mini?

Soccer is the most popular sport in the World.

Ah, so the entire industry ganging up on one manufacturer manages to break even. What were those actual usage predictions again?

You clowns are in denial, you just can't accept that people are moving on to greener pastures than those of your beloved apple. Your kids will grow up to be social rejects because they spend so much time on ipads but you're ok with that because apple owns your stupid arses. Hows your beloved Apple stock doing lololololol

I doubt it, android is the best PHONE OS, but for tablets the development isn't there yet so ipad stands miles ahead of the competition

Please see the word "sometimes" in the original post in this conversation. :D

That's a bit broad to claim it is the best PHONE OS. I would disagree with my experience with a Galaxy SIII. I found it to be cumbersome and lacking in organization. While it is more customizable than iOS without a jailbreak, it does leave a lot to be desired.

Again, they compare a hardware maker to generally, a software maker. No singe manufacturer of Tablets is anywhere close to overtaking Apple's market position in Tablet sales. Why they continue to compare and place such value on all manufacturers of Android tablets versus a single manufacturer of Apple iOS Tablets is beyond me.

To me, it is like comparing BMW's market share versus all other car manufacturers. We would only compare BMW to Lexus, or to Accura etc.

Dude, come on. ANOTHER car analogy?? And you can't even do it right.

Look, it's like comparing Mac to Windows. Many companies make Windows computers, but Apple has no issue comparing their Mac notebook sales to Windows machines as a whole. We are talking PLATFORMS. Get it?? Let that seep in.

.

Shipments.....lol.....so funny.

Lets go by sales and profits.

And 2017?

By then tablets might be a thing of the past and something completely new has taken over.

These research companies just pull stuff out of their collective you know whats.

What is even funnier is that they are not talking about "shipments" but "IDC's estimates on shipments" since they only have real numbers to work off from Apple.

It's easy to gain marketshare when you have 100 different manufacturers creating android tablets...

Except that Android isn't a unified platform.

Nooo

Apple can't lose!! :(

Guys lets buy the iPad 5 and then the mini so we can help apple win.

Wait ...

Win what?

Okay u messed up

Apple's got a pretty sweet and sustainable business model, though I can see how it makes certain linear-thinking financial analysts nervous.

People like cheap sh%$. Apple creates or redefines the market for a product (iPod, iPhone, iPad), and then skims off the most profitable segment for itself while its competitors chase the long tail. A lot of a little is something, but a little of a lot is just as good or better. Pretty sweet.

Not sure if it will happen this year, but it is bound to. When you have software releasing on multiple hardware configurations with multiple hardware vendors, of course it will take over. Not sure this is news, more like common sense.

You must have been at the top of your class to solve this troublesome problem.

My son has an iPad Mini, 2 of his friends have Android tablets. Both of his friends tablets collect dust in their bedrooms and they barely use them.

I used an Acer Ionia (sp?) a few days ago for about an hour and a half, surfing and downloading and launching apps. It's a turd. The screen is abysmal, the interface confusing, and the scrolling hurt my eyes. Then I went on Amazon to see a 4/5 star rating with hundreds of comments of how much better it was than the iPad - strangely it's one of the best Android tabs available. If all Android tablet usability is that poor then I can see why they gather dust in everyone's homes.

If Apple can release an iPad Mini 2 with Retina, and knock the current gen down to $199, they will continue to own this platform.

Yeah certainly able to predict the year 2017... thats just like 3 years and 9 months from now.

3 years and 9 months ago, the Tablet industry didnt even exist. Predicting what the tech market will be like in such a huge timeframe is ridiculous stupid.

Well said. "Tech years" are even greater than "dog years". One dog year is like 7 human years... 1 tech year is like 50 human years. Everything can change.
