Being able to run MacOS 9 and such educational software would be wonderful. The iOS devices, even the first, are certainly powerful enough. It is sad that Apple abandoned such a large number of great applications.

Maybe not OS9 but maybe OS8.1 and BOLO :)

I have just finished installing Windows 95 in mine. It actually is usable, looks amazing on iPhone 4, (like, seriously) and with an additional disk image, data can be exchanged with the Mac. No, there is no point to that exercise. :D
No networking support though, so no memory lane trip to IE3 for me. Although, I still remember times, when I would buy a magazine with a floppy, and then a CD of website dumps, because browsing Internet on dialup was way too expensive.

(screenshots to follow shortly)

Awesome, could someone make a rapidshare link of windows 95 so i could install it on my iphone too?

How long did the installation took?

There is a link provided at the top (in the quote, "tutorial") of my tA posting. It contains everything you need.

How long did the installation took?

Win3.11 installation "from disks" needed about 10 minutes to install. W95 (from the link provided) is not an install but a working image file.

I got Starflight running in mine. With kids and a job now it's hard to find time to play (and it's sad to say that my desire to play is fading too), but it's so cool to see the old graphics and hear that old theme song again. Good memories. King's Quest or Space Quest is next, I hope.

WOW. Starflight was the only game I spent time actively trying to run on newer hardware. I was so desperate at one time to play that game again I purchased a Tandy TX off of e-bay and got a good old tandy color monitor from a local flea market.

How does it look and play?

Here a working and bootable W95 on my iPad:

Quick question, I did the win95 only method you describe.

z:
imgmount d c:\w95.img
boot c:\w95.img

I copied the above into a file named win.bat, and put only that file and the win95 image onto my c:\windows drive. When I activate win.bat I get an error of: "Booting from drive A... Error loading operating system" It looks like Z: is successfully mounted, but for some reason it won't boot up.

I had this, if your iPhone is jailbroken navigate to the folder on your phone with w95.img and change the permissions so you can write to the file.

Hmm, I did have some permission errors prior to this and I changed checked on every permission to be active. I'm using winscp to access it, I right click it and select properties then just make sure all checkboxes are checked on.

Just got this OS to boot http://skyfireos.blogspot.com/ Dunno if it's any good not had time to play.

If you want to give it a try, upload it to your iDos then type:

z:
imgmount d c:\SkyFireOS Games 0.1.4a.iso -t iso (for the version with games)
imgmount d c:\SkyFireOS 0.1.4a.iso -t iso (for other version)
d:
cd/system
Openpine

It takes agout 2-3 mins to fully boot.

Edit: I've had a play and the OS is a tad on the slow side, but the games run 100%. Street Fighter 2 is very good just hard to play on a iphone.

Why at c:\windows

When I activate win.bat I get an error of: "Booting from drive A... Error loading operating system" It looks like Z: is successfully mounted, but for some reason it won't boot up.

Shouldn't you have your w95.img better at c:\ and not at c:\windows? The win.bat mounts it to c:\

My mistake, I originally had it in c:\windows but then just to make sure that wasn't the problem I moved both win.bat and w95.img into c:\

Any idea why it isn't working?

In NeoOffice/Mac a saved file looks like this (Pages won't open it):

ipadwordfileneoofficema.png

I got Microsoft Word 5.5 from here, seems to be freeware:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/word97win/Wd55_be/97/WIN98/EN-US/Wd55_ben.exe

Rename the exe to wd55.exe (all lower case) on Mac/PC and copy it to iPad/iDOS. By all means: Put it into a directory because it will expand into three million files after launching the wd55.exe. Run install.exe then.

Never opened a DOC file that fast…

How to download, install and run the nice old game Discworld:

This shapes to be one of the most amazing apps to be ever released on the iPad. And why? BECAUSE OF ITS AMAZING CUSTOMIZABILITY! Apple should take cues! :D So glad I snatched it before it went missing.

No. Here it works. Try that: Delete w95.img on iPad/iPhone and get a "new copy" from iTunes.

For some reason I can't transfer files to idos thru iTunes. When I drag it to copy it just doesn't copy.

As for the w95 install it's weird, but it just won't install, but 3.1 installs and runs just fine.

I love this app!! I can play SimCity 2000 at almost full speed with cycles=4000 on my iPhone 4. I'm BURNED though that the bluetooth keyboard I just got for my birthday won't work with it. Think there's any way to hack that?
