Installed Descent. Unplayable and no sound, but great nostalgia trip :)

Pulled

And Apple has now pulled the program. This is why I sold my iPad. /sigh

We consumers are going to be force-fed only what Apple approves and nothing more.

I love Apple products, but this control has gotten silly at this point. Apple would be better of with a better search engine on the App Store!!!

That is a ridiculous statement.

You are not forced to buy the device.
You are not forced to buy the apps on the appstore.
You are free to buy any other device which offers similar functionality.

You wouldnt get angry at a chemist for refusing to sell chemical weapons, so why get angry at the appstore? Apple have a shop, they have the right to choose what they sell in it. They also have the right to make a device which does not let you add to its functionality.

If you want a completely open store, then get an android device and deal with the security consequences that come with a lack of care by the shop keeper.

well setup is installing windows95, i dont know if it will boot though.

Same here :)
It's very very slow to setup though - it's been 10 minutes and only got 4% of the way through the initialisation of the setup!
I doubt it will be useable but I'd love to see Windows 95 running on my iPad :D

Im at 99% of copying files... any minute now.

ok so win95 is installed however i need to find a way to boot into the version of MSDOS installed with 95 on c:\ rather then the with iDos on z:\

If you're a developer, you could also download and install the source yourself and compile it for your iPad or iPhone. If you *are* a developer you probably already know this, but it's a way to get the app without jailbreaking (and take advantage of any updates if this never gets back on the App Store).

Old Game Goodness

I'll be happy if it means I can load my favorite classic Sierra games onto my phone.

Exactly my thought! I loved watching the small video of someone playing Space Quest 2 on the iPhone. Unfortunately, the keyboard overlays the screen, so it makes the usability somewhat difficult. This might be the reason to finally splurge for an iPad. Now, let's see what can I sell? Hmmm...

Will there be any practical uses to this? Might I be able to side load Cydia without jailbreaking? Or does side loading constitute jailbreaking?

cd c

Or

mount c z:\c:\

?

Or are you just wanting to figure out how to have it automatically boot into Windows 95?

I figured it was going to get pulled so I grabbed iDOS while it was up. Don't know if I will ever do anything with it, but it was only a buck. I only have an iPhone. I imagine iDOS is better on the iPad. I still have some old DOS games packed away. I am interested to see what others do.

Idos is msdos 5.0

Win95 installed itself with a new version of dos to c: however the emulator still boots the old dos on z: I do not think I am going to be able to boot 95 because of this.

Awesome, you guys rock. I'm an old DOS user from way back when, this will be fun to play with.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Is there anything we can do with this any way to exploit it? Windows 3.1 is cool but can it be bridged with my iPhones Internet connection?

Being able to run MacOS 9 and such educational software would be wonderful. The iOS devices, even the first, are certainly powerful enough. It is sad that Apple abandoned such a large number of great applications.

Got the Windows picture viewer ACDSee to work on iPad. Downloaded from here (v 2.2):
http://wiki.oldos.org/Downloads/Windows3x

First I had to switch to VGA 256 colors otherwise it won't install. Instructions here (together with Soundblaster drivers, listen to the old Win system sounds, play and edit WAV and MIDI):

Only drawback with VGA 256: When you switch back to DOS wit Alt + F4 the DOS prompt won't show up properly.

Just run acdsee.exe. Install needs ten minutes or so…
