It will for sure be extra $$$ each month. I just wonder how much??? If $10 then a lot of people will choose the option and AT&T will make a lot of money. If anything greater than that I won't go for it, and I don't think many others would either.

Then it will be more than that.

They don't want people to do this, so I'm guessing it will be $20-$30 a month to keep most people away.

I'm pretty sure tethering plans on AT&T are $30/month already. I'm guessing it'll be that, which I find lame since you're already paying for unlimited data for the phone.

Im gonna stick with Pdanet (jailbroken). I wont give them another dime a month.

I would use a wired connection as you won't have to worry about interference or less than 100% speeds. However, when I use the netshare app, i still plug my phone (directly into an outlet) and I my battery doesn't die at all, although I do get worried about melting the plastic on the phone if I run it for a long enough time.

By that logic, everyone should use ethernet and not 802.11 so they don't have to worry about interference. Right?

Also, look up the melting point of plastic.

i feel confident it will be usb because it would not require steve to open the phone up any more.

I pay $59.99 for a Express Card with 3G through AT&T. So anything less than that would be less, although I would expect if it requires a USB port physically tethering the phone to the computer to do it, less people would be interested. I for one, want it to use a wireless signal just like setting up a new network on the iPhone and connecting through it via AirPort on the computer. Any other way would SUCK! Would make me rethink my plan if it is wireless, but I would probably stick with my plan if it costs more than $25 or $30 and/or requires me to physically tie the phone to the computer to do it.

The technology is there, just make it a wireless data exchange could be easily secured to ensure nobody gets free access too. Although, they all might wonder if people are getting rid of their home Internet and linking all their home computers too, as that would bring the AT&T 3G service to a stop... in a hurry. Bandwidth overload.

Nope. The phone's wifi is not as powerful as a router, so if I leave my phone across the room to plug it into an outlet (battery depletes even when plugged I to my MacBook), objects and distance will weaken the signal. Interference does not necessarily mean radio waves.

I don't really see the need to involve iTunes -- creating a user friendly app to walk you through making the iPhone into a wireless access point would be my preferred route.
Agree.

Being connected via USB cable allows for full use of the iPhone and maintain the battery at the same time. This would be great for those situations where you are in cell range, but do not have a LAN or WiFi connection.

FWIW, I already carry a short Apple Dock Connector to USB Cable with me. Works fine with my touch and Nano. Takes very little space.
