If I buy a HomePod mini do I need to buy anything else to make this product functional? For example, does the HomePod mini come with a freaking power chord - that plugs into a wall outlet?

It includes everything you need, regardless of where you buy it.
even better (read:worse)! it comes with a cord you cant remove! charger is included, but gosh that cord bothers me.

I get you but I could see there being an advantage in cases where the HomePod is wobbled due to someone walking by it or moving something around it and pulls at the cable, the HomePod will drop to the ground and dent or the display at the top can crack.

It will do nothing but flash pretty colored swirl LEDs if you don’t have an device or Mac to perform setup 🙂
Whoopsie - I totally forgot to mention that I have an iPhone 7 Plus and a 2015 MacBook Pro. I happen to have bought a few Kasa Smart Plugs and use Home on my iPhone and my MacBook to control the Smart Plugs. Very neat and it even seems to work as expected.
Although I was very disappointed to find out that the Apple HomePod mini lacked bluetooth connectivity - I have high hopes that the following will work to hear audio:
2015 MacBook (Monterey) >> Safari (v 17.6) >> AirPlay >> HomePod mini
Another use case would be this
2015 MacBook (Monterey) >> QuickTime (v 10.5) >> AirPlay >> HomePod mini
If AirPlay turns out to be a hassle or an utter failure then I can use the HomePod mini for remote access to my Kasa Smart Plugs (i.e. I'm miles, and miles, away from my home and want to turn lights on/off using Home on my iPhone).

what you described will work. old macs and iphone support airplay. your homepod mini will show up as an available audio device. on ios as well
the mini will also work just fine for remotely accessing homekit as a home hub.
however come february 10th, the forced home architecture update will disallow your iphone 7 and macbook air from working with homekit since it is no longer supported / getting homekit updates
you need iOS 16.2 or above on iPhone
and 13.1 on MacOS for homekit
but you will be able to use siri voice commands on the homepod. a supported apple watch would be a decent way to work around it and provide remote access to homekit.

I've been living on borrowed time for quite a while now. I'm utterly shocked that my 2015 MacBook Pro is still functional (mostly). The same goes for my iPhone 7 Plus.
