Scalping will never stop, but it is possible to slow them down depending on available stock and how ordering online has primarily become predominant. The issue with scalping, is it takes away from the consumer who legitimately wants an iPhone without paying absorbent prices, which a scalper will sell online for more than 2 to 3 times the value.

We have one ️ lurking around out here. Forgot the username but he was asking what’s the best method to order so that he can buy an iPhone X & sell with more profit.

People are being childish, grow up, it’s a phone, stop anticipating the technology before it comes out.” - A member of a web forum devoted to discussing rumours and hearsay about new Apple products before they come out.

Better option is to just make enough for everyone so scalpers get screwed... that's what Tim Cook is going to do. Scalpers are wasting their time and their money, they are going to get DESTROYED by Tim Cook's supply chain monster.

$ talks too loudly. Scalpers are the inevitable result, sadly.

I’m sure cook knows what he’s doing. Apple’s revenue has only grown leaps and bounds since he became the CEO. His major responsibility is towards the shareholders while keeping the customers happy. That’s how a corporate company should work and Cook has done a great job so far.

Executive bonuses haven't slowed this year for sure.

You know, if you were the CEO of a large profit-oriented corporation, you'd be somewhat money-hungry, too. Don't pretend otherwise.

  • Allowed only 1 iPhone X per person (no matter if you’re buying outright or carrier locked)
  • Locked the iPhone X to the person’s Apple ID for 3 months so no one else can use the phone other than the person who bought it (still returnable within 14 days of delivery/pickup)
  • Made it ‘pay full amount’ only (no instalments/iUP)
Half of the shortage issues of iPhone X would be immediately get sorted, because this would mean more people would have a chance of getting one. No scalping, no hoarding, etc. Almost every single person pre ordering it on 27/10 would get one on 03/11!

This strategy, if used during any kind of Apple pre order, would literally solve half the supply/demand issue, and later when there’s good supply, Apple can offer other avenues of getting the product.

Coming from someone that orders for myself on pre order and use the financing, I do not think it would be fair at all to lock people like me out. I can’t drop 1k all at once, but I can afford the monthly phone bill easily.
I do agree that it should be one per person.
I also think the phone should have to be activated on a wireless account for a minimum of 3 months before it can be unlocked.

Why just one? What if I want to buy 1 for myself and my wife? Or gift my kids? Or buy for my parents? As long as I can pay outright, I should be allowed to buy it.

Then they wait with you. They did that with the first iPhone and even though it was slightly inconvenient, it makes the inventory stretch further.

Grab four friends or relatives. Give them all cash. Each one is a considered per customer. Scalping is easier if done in groups if 1 limit per customer is applied.

People don't even have a home or electricity in Houston and Puerto Rico right now. Did Apple donate their own money to help them? Why should Apple care about people getting an iPhone X on launch day just so more of them will be happy?

Their objective seems to be to reach over a trillion dollars in cash reserves and sell iPhones forever and ever until people's credit score are so low. They are a business and not a charity. They won't do favors.

Just be grateful you are actually get an iPhone X whether launch day or weeks later. Most Puerto Ricans are scouring for food right now and with no electricity while others online are worried they may not have "a not so life-changing" product on Nov 3rd.

And three-four months later you could walk into an Apple store and buy one. No fuss, no muss. Quite possible that any kinks would be worked out by then too.

Also by then, all these people who apparently can’t live without the X will already be salivating over rumours of the next model and making plans to sell their X.

Nice in theory, impossible in practice.

Once you buy something, it is your property and you have every right to sell it, trade it, give it away, whatever.

Apple has no enforceable right to limit what you do with a device once you have bought it. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the terms and conditions, it would be unenforceable. It’s the buyer’s property.

That isn’t to say there is nothing Apple could do. It’s just that most suggestions I’ve seen are silly.

Apple makes the most money from people who can't really afford their products. Why would they alienate this group? Cute, but no.

i think Apple releasing in so many countries at once will cut back on scalping in and of itself.

i think a lot of the past scalpers would send the phones off to other countries were they weren't even available to buy through Apple.

(*speculation)
