Does the fingerprint scanner concern you?

I don't think there will be a finger print scanner in the next iPhone, however, if there is it isn't an automatic deal breaker for me. YMMV.

I think it's pretty cool, I wouldn't reconsider at all if I were planning for the 5s. Plus, people can lift your finger prints off of anything you touch really, so unless you want to wear rubber gloves for the rest of your life, good luck hiding your finger prints from the world.

Your saying if it doesn't have fingerprint scanner then you wont buy it but you probably own a iPhone already

I am scared that someone that steals my iPhone may cut out my finger to take with him so he can access the phone.

If you are concerned about security just disable the feature. That is not a reason to not buy the phone. I don't smoke so I won't buy a car if it comes with a cigarette ligher. Ohh, give me a break!!!!!

Fingerprint scanner is a waste of hardware space. They didn't take off on laptops, gun vaults or door locks....I don't see them being in phones.

How does this make sense? No iPhone that the OP can own right now has a fingerprint scanner in it and they won't buy a 5S if it does.

So... haven't seen this mentioend yet...

Let's say the next iPhone has the fingerprint scanner
Let's say it sucks
Let's say Apple sells your fingerprint info (trying to keep a straight face)
Let's say I simply don't use the scanner and stick with my 4-pin password

Why would you NOT by a phone simply because it has an optional feature that you don't care to use? I find siri to be borderline worthless. That doesn't mean I am going to toss my phone away...

I wonder if the OP realizes if there is a fingerprint scanner built in, it will probably be a standard item in all future iPhone models. Might wanna consider a new platform then ;)

You could subscribe to the sensationalist cult of fear, outrage, indignation, me-too, me-first, where's mine, NIMBY, OMDB, etc (all of which contribute to the mentality that requires companies to even consider putting something as retarded as a fingerprint scanner in a telephone) , or you could have a shiny new phone.

Seeing as how you can't even come up with any "implications", I'm guessing you'll get the phone. Come back when you do so we can all say, "See, was that so bad?".

I chose the wrong answer on the poll; wasn't paying attention.

Anyways, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I'm open for a new security option as long as it works correctly.

This all started because Apple acquired AuthenTec. Some how between then and now people have come to 2 conclusions.

1. All Apple makes is the iPhone.
2. All AuthenTec makes is fingerprint scanners.

But the reality is both iPhone and fingerprint scanner is just a portion of what each company does. There was a HUGE gap that was filled with assumptions and rumors to get to where we are now.

Seriously, no offense to the OP or anyone, but really? ID thieves don't want your fingerprints - they want your DOB, address, SS#, bank account info, etc.
You leave your prints everywhere you go, every day. Tell me, what can a malicious app do with fingerprints? I mean, don't you access your bank on your smartphone?

Really man?
- There is a record of all your phone calls.
- There is a record of all your messages.
- There is a record of all your emails.
- There is ample data on your buying habbits, app and usage preferences, and personal relations.
- There is a record of all your GPS traces.
- There is a front-facing camera always looking at you.

So all the above is okay, but the fingerprint sensor is where you draw the line? We crossed the privacy line a looooooong time ago.

Incidentally, one of my friends has a peice of duct-tape over the front-facing camera on his iPhone 4S, also out of being paranoid I suspect. The downside is that now his screen doesn't auto-adjust the brightness. Seems just silly to me.

Why would this be a dealbreaker when you could certainly just not use the fingerprint reading capability. According to some reports at Arstechnica.com, Apple's iMessage was one of the few communication methods that the NSA did not have access to, so perhaps your distrust is misplaced.

Not to mention the camera is now what's used to tell when your face is against the screen. So when you're talking to him and his face is pushing buttons on the screen, remind him that at least "they" can't see the inside of his ear now.

Once I heard that Apple was even considering adding a fingerprint scanner to their devices, I immediately chewed off all of my finger tips. Take that Apple!!!! The government may know my address; social security number and place of work, and tax info and yes I've already been fingerprinted twice now (when I joined Army and when I got my CCL)...but letting Tim Cook know my fingerprint is going just a bit too far. Sure, Apple already has access to my credit card and sure I've never completed a single financial transaction where my fingerprint was actually needed for anything; regardless, I thought chewing off my prints was a reasonable response at the time. Best decision I ever made.

If you are over the age of 18, anyone that matters probably already has your fingerprints. And if they don't, it's because you have no reason to worry about them having your prints.

Still, a fingerprint scanner is HORRIBLE for personal security reasons. It takes little more than a piece of clear tape to defeat a fingerprint scanner, and they wouldn't even need to try to find your fingerprint on a can or whatever, since your phone has your prints literally covering it.

How so? If it's capacitive like the iPhone display, it would need to be a physically "live" finger.....so unless someone were to chop your fingers off, I think you'd be fine.

Also, someone already noted this, but given the most popular password is 'password', i think a fingerprint sensor can only ADD security. There are also other applications other than security.

And OP - what are you so worried about? What the hell would anyone do with your fingerprints? Unless you're Bruce Wayne and your prints are needed to execute stock trades, stop being so paranoid.

TBH, I make sure to dust for prints everytime I have company over - never know when those prints might come in handy ;)

EDIT: Although, now that I think about it - iPhones using fingerprint tech might make the above practice actually worth it for crooks. Well, if you do use an iPhone with a fp scanner, make sure you wear gloves out to places and don't touch anything. Otherwise, you're leaving your "password" everywhere!
