An interesting question was bought up by @hiddenmarkov in the Apple Watch Sales Estimated at 5.1 Million in Holiday Quarter, Swiss Watch Sales in Trouble news discussion thread...

Question for the apple watch owners: If there was no apple watched released last year, or ever....would you have bought a swiss based watch last year.

So did you buy your Apple Watch instead of a Swiss made traditional watch (or even one made elsewhere) or would you have not purchased a traditional watch of any description last year if Apple had not entered the smartwatch market?

Other smartwatch owners have who moved to the Apple Watch can also join in.

I hadn't worn a traditional watch in years. When the rumors started coming out about the Apple watch, I knew I would be getting one on launch day. (Which I eventually did.) It just makes so much sense!

This is what I nearly bought for myself in 2014. If the AW hadn't been announced, I was ready to pick one up sometime last year. It's just above the $500 mark* for the sake of the poll, but I wouldn't put it in the four-figure category.

* add-on edit: I just realized that the price for this Hamilton at the shop in the pic was the same as what we paid for my SS AW with AC+.

weared watches since forever, had two pebbles (original and steel) at that point, but wanted to give the apple a try - so far I like it, battery could be better tough.

There's an option missing: "It was a present, I did not choose it, but still love it anyway" :D

Neither, because it is 1st gen Apple new product to work 100% with iPhone. Never consider any Android phone or watch, regardless how many watch is already in the market.

This would almost make 2 good polls: what you got it in lieu of and how you got it (planned purchase, spontaneous purchase, gift, etc...)

Already own more than a couple Swiss watches, and am (was?) a mechanical watch enthusiast. I bought the Apple Watch to try it out, and it's too useful not to wear, at this point.

I already had a pebble and wanted a better smart watch. That is not really an option, so I went with "
because I'd already got a rival smartwatch but I couldn't resist the Apple Watch."

I have a watch collection mixed with G-Shocks, Seiko and Citizens, and some nice Swiss pieces from Tag Heuer, Omega, and Doxa. I originally bought the Space Grey Sport which that cash would had went towards a G-Shock. When Apple released the Space Black on Sport band which went on sale for the Best Buy $100 off deal around the holidays, I sold the Space Grey and upgraded which is usually how my watch collection works, 1 in 1 out. I then purchased the Link bracelet off Ebay which ultimately this whole sale would had went towards a Citizen Signature Automatic.

I will add, since I got the Apple Watch in Space Black, my watch rotation has stopped rotating. This watch rarely leaves my wrist except when doing work around the house or going out with my wife. It now has me seriously considering reducing the size of the collection.

For me, watches have always been a tool (was in law enforcement/corrections for almost 20 years then got into computers). I currently have for my "work" watch (I'm now retired) a Traser H3 Commander (P5606 Titanium) that I use for my 'heavy lifting" type stuff around the house. It's been a VERY reliable watch and was only around $500 when I got it. I was given my current SS SB Apple Watch by my local Dr's (married) that I do free computer work for at their clinic as a "thank you" gift for the recent job I did. They know I'm into "geek" stuff, and figured since I had a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad I might as well have the watch to go along with it.
I honestly would not have purchased the watch for myself (I normally wait until the second release of stuff like this) but I wasn't going to offend them and turn it down. ;)

Essentially replaced a ~£150 Casio watch. Hadn't planned to buy a new watch before the Apple Watch, but wanted to try a smartwatch. Still love the Casio, but it's definitely used a lot less.

Mine was a Christmas gift from my significant other... I was waiting for version 2 before deciding on an Apple Watch. Now I've gotten so used to it that I couldn't be without. It has replaced the little Tissot I'd been wearing for many years now, as well as a Polar for running and a bunch of Swatch watches :D

Same here. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but my wife and I even have matching Aqua Terras, and we don't even wear them when we go out anymore. It may be time to start unloading some Swiss watches before the price bubble pops.

I'll give ya three-fifty for 'em!

I had a Pebble and was considering buying a Moto 360 to go with my Moto X, but went with an Apple Watch instead. I just couldn't resist being part of the first gen Apple Product bandwagon to be 100% honest!

I wore a traditional watch for work - often needing to check the time and time things. Then when fitness bands came about I wanted that function. I tried a Fuelband first then a Vivosmart. However, cheching the time and timing things was clunky.

The Apple Watch allowed me to combine these and it does most of what I need. First tried the Sport but it didn't really work with formal wear so went with the SS Link and a Sport band for exercise.

I will say I've jumped around other smartwatches (360, Urbane, 360 v2, Gear S2) but felt they were less polished than WatchOS and didn't handle basic notifications as well. They also lacked some features like a speaker to make/receive calls when driving or bluetooth headphone compatibility when running.

I guess the AW does the best of most of what I want whilst looking decent too.

I've had a few G-Shocks and multiple random stainless steel watches. I think this watch has gotten me more into watches, in general. Though it has gotten kind of hard now to go without the functionality of this one, I think I might get more watches.
