Honestly, it probably has a lot to do with applecare+ being less valuable. It also looks like they may charge you an extra $29 fee for the OOW replacement making it $258.

"When you request service, you will be charged the ERS Fee and the Out-of-Warranty Service Fee shown in the table below."

I believe that's only if you request Express Replacement Service (getting the new iPhone in the mail first then sending the old one back), not if you exchange at the Apple store.

yeah, they just upped it this time around =/

First a few things. I dont think you can look at warranties as not worth or worth it as a general sentiment. It all depends on the failure rate of the product. In the case of the iphone 4/4s it had a very very high incident of glass breaks but overall a very very low failure rate on everything else. In that case, a $99/warranty may be worth it since that plus the $49 is still cheaper than an on warranty replacement. Obviously the failure rate (including glass breaks) will go up significantly if you dont use a case).

On the iPhone 5, a few changes. First, the phone is shown to be much much more durable in 3rd party tests. In fact, it may be one of the most durable phones out there. Time will tell with this but its promising. Additionally, with the new design, and the glass and touch sensors being integrated, it is now very easy for them to swap out the front glass. All Apple stores or most will be equipped with devices capable of quickly changing the glass. On previous models, the front glass breaks = new phone.

What does this mean for OP? If you use your phone naked and it gets banged up and you want to "Accidentally" break it to get a new clean one, chances are that if you do this by breaking the glass, you are not going to get a new ones. Just glass replaced. If your only concern is breaking the glass, id say get the warranty for the peace of mind and go naked. But if you are highly anal about your device and treat it like a watch, then your choice may not be as easy. You are very likely to scratch it up at some point over two years. Sure you could always slip up and drop it in the toilet but that is for you to decide.

Wait a second, they let you KEEP your old iPhone if you use your $50 deductible? WTF?

No, I'm saying not to purchase AC+ just so you can get the same model replacement iPhone six months down the road just because it's scratched up or something.

Just don't pay $150 just to get a scratch free iPhone when a better use of your money is not to purchase AC+ and apply $150 toward the next generation model and you sell your one-year-old scratched up iPhone for an easy $450 if you unlock it.

Well it does cover accidental damage, so if the side is all banged up and you want it replaced, they will do that. That is not normal wear and tear, so you could request a new one for the $50 deductible. From my experience with applecare+, they always replace they phone and never repair it. If the glass is broke and the sides are jacked, they will give you a new one....not just replace the screen.

I normally don't buy Applecare, the iPhone 4/4s were built like tanks, but the 5 seems a little fragile (even though I will be using the Incipio Feather case), so thanks to this thread I just called in and had Applecare+ added :)

What? The iPhone 4 and 4S were built like tanks? They were built of glass and definitely were more fragile than the 5 is. One drop and they were almost sure to crack or shatter. While the 5 is much more prone to scratching and showing wear, its much less likely to crack if dropped.

Will Applecare+ cover against scratches?

I think you are crazy if you think anyone will pay $450 for a scatched unlocked phone. Now you can unlock any phone on these "unlock sites" for $20.

No, or at least it's not supposed to.

Tell me about it. I ebayed my and my wife's scratched up iPhone 4 (jailbroken and unlocked) for $455 and $460, respectively, about two months after the 4S debuted.

I ahte when **** like this happens the OP asked a good questions and you guys turned in into a stupid stupid fight... Yes apple care will cover scrashes... if not just drop it in front of the agent face and ask now will you replace it?

Also to who ever said that dropping intentionally is fraud... ya ya ok go call the policy and tell them to arrest me because i drop my phone...

Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will service your iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.

iPhone model Out-of-Warranty Service
iPhone 5 $229
iPhone 4S $199
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS,
iPhone 3G, Original iPhone $149
A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in U.S. dollars and are subject to local tax.

When setting up out-of-warranty service, Apple will request credit card pre-authorization for the maximum service fee listed above. This amount will be deducted from your credit limit. The final service fee we charge will be determined during testing and may be less than the service fee listed above.

Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPhone that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.

Apple reserves the right to determine whether or not your iPhone is eligible for Out-of-Warranty service. iPhones that are repaired or replaced have a 90-day limited hardware warranty or assume the remainder of your standard warranty or AppleCare service contract coverage, whichever is longer. Please see Apple's Repair Terms And Conditions for further details.

I decided to pass on the AppleCare+, but am still enjoying the look of a naked iPhone 5 because I got a front & back Wrapsol Ultra installed right after I purchased the device. If I end up ever having to pay $229 for an out of warranty replacement I am okay with that because I'd rather pay $229 than $649 lol.

Yes apple care will cover scrashes...

"(v) The Plan does not apply to cosmetic damage to the Covered iPhone, including but not limited to scratches and dents, that do not otherwise affect the functionality of the Covered iPhone."

Also to who ever said that dropping intentionally is fraud...

"ADH (accidental damage from handling) coverage does not include (a) protection against normal wear and tear, theft, misplacement, reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct associated with handling and use of the Covered iPhone,"

I love looking at my iPhone naked.

I figure if she gets a scratch I could accidentally play baseball with it, and voila brand new iphone.

1) Don't ever use the word 'rock' as a verb.

2) The deductible is $50 and the plan is $99. Go ahead, drive over it and shell out cash on a chipped scuffed phone. Sounds like a genius plan.

I think people are forgetting that you can get your money back pro-rated if you don't use it. If you call app+ next year 1 week before it hits one year you can get a refund or pro-rated refund if you didn't use it.

I mean, its a safety net, its designed to help you if you are more risky with your phone. Using your phone without a case in my book is more risky, but I like the idea of it

If you buy AppleCare+ is it safe to rock your iPhone naked?
Subjective matter. You have 2 incidents. That's it. Take whatever precautions you think are reasonable -- same as any question about going naked versus using a case, etc.

And if you purchased it with a credit card that doubles the warranty, you can get most or all of the $229 back assuming it breaks down in the 2nd year.

It's a common slang among iPhone users.

AC+ seems to really only be worth if you treat your phones roughly and inevitably get them replaced, and you use both replacements during the two years.

Then you're paying $199 instead of $458 for two replacements, saving more than 50% of the cost.

I have a roommate who has broken the front and back glass of his iPhone 4 4-5 times now in the last 2 years. He is the perfect AC+ candidate.

I wish they sold plain old applecare still. I'd pay $50 for an extra year of warranty coverage against speakers stop working or home buttons wearing out. My 4 and 3G had to be replaced because of those issues, respectively.
