Depending on the load it could take as little as 15 minutes or a lot more, but it does.
 
Are you canceling on apple? I need to do it too cause it's not upgrading the line I want to upgrade.
 
I have the same issue. I upgraded through AT&T to the 6 64 Space Gray, and the confirmation email said that it would arrive on/around the 19th.

Now the order status page is showing an estimated ship date between 9/23 and 10/2 and gives me the option to "Cancel Preorder."

I checked Apple and it shows the 6 64 SG as being available to ship and arrive on 9/19. So, now I'm wanting to cancel the AT&T preorder, but only if it will cancel the upgrade as well and then try it through Apple.

I just don't want to cancel the pre-order and then they tell me I still upgraded so it wouldn't let me try through Apple and I'd still have to wait (maybe even longer) with AT&T.

So it is a sure thing that if you cancel the preorder, it will update your account (eventually, at least) to show that you are still upgrade eligible?
 
it WILL eventually return your eligibility when you cancel a preorder.

however, i have no idea how long it takes. i remember from past years people saying it took a couple of days. that may have changed as i see someone upthread said 15 minutes.

but it will eventually happen, and hopefully while they still have availabilty on the 19th for you!
 
I just live chatted with AT&T and they said if you cancel the preorder, the upgrade is returned to your line within a couple of hours, or sooner.

Not sure whether to trust them and try it, or not.

that's nice to know in case we want to cancel out 7-10 days til ships orders and pick up our phones in store next friday if they are available!
 
Yes. I ended up canceling preorders on both AT&T and Apple last year due to the sizeable cluster that preorders were, and in both instances upgrade eligibility was restored to my account within a few minutes to a few hours.
 
Ok this is good to know. I have an order at Verizon that I might need to cancel due to being scared about the estimated delivery junk, but I have a reservation through apple. B401 reserve. So once I know for sure the apple one would be a day 1 I will cancel Verizon and then finish the Apple order.

I'd like to cancel my Apple.com and change it to 64 GB. However, the online page does not let me cancel and the phone number says "we can't talk to you right now. goodbye." haha.
 
Well, I selected "Cancel Preorder" and it brought up a new page saying that if I click confirm they will send me an email to confirm the cancellation.

Clicked confirm and still no email - and that was about 15 minutes ago.

On the phone with AT&T now to try to have a rep cancel it and restore the upgrade - but they said they are experiencing unusually high call volume! Not surprised.

Same, except I tried almost an hour ago. No email

With my luck, by the time the email comes, Apple's shipping dates will slip
 
Just canceled mine over the phone. Roughly 40 minutes on hold and then another 30 minutes of the rep trying to find the actual order (I had the order number and activation number ready for her).

What a cluster this is every year. This year was worse for me than any previous. For some reason Apple was unable to order through Next in my region for whatever reason. Disappointed, mostly in the hours of sleep I lost for absolutely nothing lol.
 
I was clicking on it and get a service not available message, so I kept going and eventually got like 3 confirmation emails just now. Went ahead and cancel it.

I've tried that, but it is telling me that my line is not eligible for an upgrade - presumably since AT&T has essentially processed my order/upgrade?
 
I cancelled my late morning Apple.com preorder and within 5 minutes I was able to redo my order with my reservation order.
 
Worked within seconds for me. I ordered on VerizonWireless.com last night and decided to upgrade the storage today.

All I had to do was go to:

Enter my pre-order number in the reference number spot, my last name and it was cancelled. I immediately opened my Apple Store app and was able to order the other size I wanted and it showed my upgrade eligibility right away and I'm still getting the 9/19 ship date!
 
On the phone, they are telling me that you can't cancel it for a full 24 hours! She said she talked to her manager and the manager said that she couldn't do it and I had to wait 24 hours before I could cancel it.

What a load...

She's now trying to get a different manager involved. FYI, I'm using you, lordofthereef, as evidence that it can be cancelled over the phone prior to 24 hours passing.
 
For those that successfully canceled their order, how did you do it? I called twice after long waits and no one could find the order. I still cannot find my order on ATTwireless.com "My Orders" but the link from email for order status to the Premier website shows my order. Just the cancel button doesn't work.
