I think you meant - if maps aren't that important - you have to look past that.
I'd think if maps and location-based apps are your staple - then steer clear for now
Unfortunately, people that aren't tech savvy (And before anyone here thinks of ridiculing those people, they're the ones responsible for Apple's success) aren't inclined to research that deep into a free iOS upgrade.
When Apple touts a product as 'the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever' and has a good track record, then people are inclined to buy into it. Unfortunately a lot of people have had their fingers burned on this one, and may think twice.
Overall, iOS6 is functional, my battery life seems to have improved slightly, but otherwise I've not noticed much change. I have a sat nav in my car, so maps was and remains redundant (And thank God for that, it couldn't find any of the places I've been in the last week), so there's really nothing in it that impacts on me.
If Apple wants to keep it's halo, it really needs to step up with something fresh soon.
