It's not hard to spend $100,000 ..... but what is hard is spending $100,000 a day. Keeping in mind that when we dreamt up this exercise it was the '80s and things were cheaper.

Buy a car. It's going to take the better part of day to buy a car in that price range. Lets say you go all out and get a $125k car. Shop and test drive one day. Take delivery the next day. Now you have another $75k to spend. Go clothes shopping. If you manage to spend $30k on clothes (!) You still have $45k carrying over to the next day. Even if you have blow out dinner.

Next day, go house shopping. It takes a week, minimum, to close a deal - even if you find what you want on the first day. So, the house had better be at least $700k.

Ok, now what? You own a house (or you will in a week) and car, spiffy threads.... So you go travelling. Count on a day to get from your home to London, NYC, Paris, Toronto, Berlin, Tokyo, HK, etc. Remember, while you are in the plane you are still getting that $100K, and no matter how much the 1st class ticket, hotel, limo cost... it ain't gonna be no $100k. More to carry over tomorrow.

I'm not advocating this as a meaningful way of life. My point is that us plebes are not bred/trained/taught to spend this kind of money on an ongoing basis. Oh, we can figure out what to do with $40,000. But if we ever got our hands on real wealth we'd have a much more difficult time dealing with it.

Oh, that's easy. Go to a big, expensive bar, and order rounds for the entire bar. Repeat as necessary.

Just for fun!

Edit: it can't be anything that you're planning to buy and resell later for money!

Pay off my mortgage, then stocks.

In light of the edit,

Pay off my mortgage, buy plane tickets for a nice European vacation and cruise, then put the rest in to tech. iMac, MacBook Pro setup.

And yes, i would use it for streetphotography like never seen before!

For the $40K challenge, since someone says that investments that you'd later sell don't count, I'd either do the boring thing of paying down my mortgage, or buy some kind of Mediterranean property.

For the $100k/day challenge, I assume you'd be buying companies and properties and investments each day, not consumer goods.

I think this concept (not to buy and resell) got lost in this thread. ;)

Personally, I don't think too many people have thought about how to spend any large amount of money in just one day. How often do we get to a point where we have a lot of money that we have to spend quickly?

The smartest thing to do in the real world, where you don't have to spend it in one day (or one week, or one month, or even a year), is to invest with an eye always for reselling later for a profit.

So if I had to actually spend $40K on cold, hard, goods, these are some of the things on my wishlist (these are things I actually want, not stuff I'm pulling out of thin air for the sake of spending the money):

$2000 - a new 15" MacBook Pro
$800 - iPad 2 :D
$1200 - a Fuji FinePix X100 :D (a small shooter to complement my DSLR gear)
$3500 - 60" Sony Bravia LED TV for the living room
$2000 - SONOS receivers and touchscreen remotes for my living room, bedroom, and studio (to complement the one unit I already have in the kitchen)
$2000 - Panasonic AE4000 projector for my home theater room
$1500 - sectional sofas for home theater room
$2000 - AV receiver and (modest) speakers for the home theater room (not trying to build the ultimate theater room here, but one well sized for my current house)
$25000 (whatever's left over) - a decent compact SUV, such as a Subaru Forester

So, who wants to help me get started? I'll send you my PayPal address ;)

Put some money down on a townhouse condo in GA and finish paying off my car loan. :) im good on macs for a while. Probably party in mia and dr for a week. and put the rest in the bank.

I would donate it to the Palin for president campaign.

I don't know if this guy makes millions a year with Fox Network like Palin, or what his net worth is right now, but he announced today an official campaign and he's the first, so I think he will take your forty grand today. ;)

With just a few hours with his exploratory committee, they said it's a "go". I think ole Donald Trump won't be heard from now that a real politician (even though he's not my cup of tea) has officially thrown his hat in the ring. He sounds like a nice and very intelligent guy, and heck if I were a conservative, I would vote for him.

I'd pay for a golf membership initiation fee to a nice country club and pre-pay as many years in advance (quarterlies/food minimums) as allowed. That would be right after buying season tickets to the Caps/Nats for the next 2 years after this one.

I'm just stunned that I was able to say the dirty word "Palin" without having the moderator delete my post.

Ok, let me exclude things like "paying off my debts/mortgage", investments, or other options.

If I had to spend $40k in a single day on tangibles, I'd buy a VW Golf, an 11" MBA, a Nikon 135 mm f/2 lens, a decent pair of headphones, an HTC Desire HD, and spend the rest on food and alcohol with my friends. :)

What did I miss?

Probably 3 other references to the same movie. ;)

Hmm, that's a hard one. But I'd start off by buying 3 iPads. One for my backpack/traveling, one for my leisure at home and one for just in case.

I would pay for a crash course in driving to quickly get me up to speed, and then I would pay for my theory and driving test and get them done. I would then insure myself on my Dad's BMW, as the last time I checked it was just about £20k a year to do that at my age anyway (11 year old 528i). Then spend anything that's left over on as good a 15" MBP I can get. Sorted :)

firstly, pay off all of the Apple gadget debt from last year! Then put the rest towards my wedding, mortgage deposit and a kindle!

Actually, there are always people who come here with what seems to be the minority view of being a Republican. Most here are Democrats, but all views are welcome.

But let's put this into context. I voted Green Party and Libertarian on every candidate last two election cycles, and all the votes of those two parties combined cannot even get withing spitting distance of the GOP or Dems so if you feel alienated, just think of me. I think there is even a communist or two here and more than a few who say they never vote at all. Again, every view is welcome, but if not part of the two major parties, are understandably going to be jumped on. Every time I tell people I vote Green, they tell me that I voted for John McCain. It's an illogical argument as crazy as those who believe that all who voted for Ross Perot in 1992 severely hurt George H.W. Bush and thus really voted for Bill Clinton. ;)

True, what you are saying, about all views being welcome. However....

I can say, and no one can argue, that I can vote Green in the next election (I won't, but I could) and my vote absolutely, positively, 110% won't be helping either a Democratic or Republican candidate. :)

Invest is the obvious choice.

However, if I had to blow it on silly things, I'd probably pick up a nice used car for about $20K, spend around $10K on tech stuff, and the remainder on impromptu travel somewhere really awesome.
