I am in the position where I HAD to (for work reasons) and just built myself a PC based on the new i7 processor. Really happy with it and I don't have to use my MBP for gaming anymore :)

Sony Viao laptop. They're kinda sexy. Or a Dell XPS for a desktop.

I used to think about getting a viao until,
My friend got a 17" viao last year. Top spec with loads of stickers to tell you what was in it. She was having troble conncting he Sony phone via the advertised Bluetooth so she took it in to be looked at. There wasn't even a Bluetooth module installed.
Then the hinges gave out and the screen wouldn't stay open, and 1/2 the keyboard stopped working...

If I had to buy a laptop I'd get some kind of netbook.
If I had to (and I plan on doing soon) get a PC it'd be a home build with 4870x2, Core2Quad, 8gb ram etc and cost a fraction of a Mac :eek: and likely a bit less than what a store would try and sell me.

Desktop - Falcon Northwest, I have am using on as my gaming rig and i could ask for a better PC. I had 0 problems with any Falcon Northwest and i am using 9 in my LAN.

Laptop - Dell, I would pick up the 15" XPS or the new 16" black XPS.

I can live without a Mac desktop but I am to attached to my MBP.

IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad

They're built like tanks. Very reliable and my friends who have them aren't complaining (other than it being aesthetically on the low end of the beauty spectrum).

If Apple were magically to buy back all my POS Macs to date and they were to pay for the OS X -> Windows application suite porting that is currently ongoing then disappear without a trace, I'd not only do a little dance of joy but stick with pretty much what I have - the equivalents being:

XServe -> HP Proliant / Dell Poweredge
Not that I'm extremely unhappy with the XServes all things considered, but I have more choice and more consistent support from HP/Dell.

Pro Pro -> HP xw8600 / Dell Precision T7400
The souped-up Toyota vans to Apple's Escalade. More stable and genuinely 'just works' in a wider variety of situations, supported for actually professional use, better engineered for a hard working life, more practically expandable and ultimately more powerful as a result.

Home Pro -> Above + Dell XPS 730 H2C - or a DIY for gaming
The Pro is not really a home enthusiast / entertainment fit. Windows offers far better choices instead of the amusing triumphal posts of "Look what I put into my Pro with extreme effort that anyone can do on a reasonably powerful PC in 5 minutes!".

Air -> Sony TT / UX
A gorgeous joke. The TT is not.

Alu Macbook -> Sony SZ / Z
The newest SZ I have which I didn't buy NOS is a year old - yet it's still a better machine than the Macbook for a 13-inch life on the road, although I'll concede that the Macbook is better looking (I like the sharp lines on the SZ too though). The Z on the other hand is not only more suitable for those looking towards the 15-inch MBP but actually spend a lot of time with a notebook instead of a DTR, but even the midrange models blows away the Macbook for not much more.

Macbook Pro 15-inch -> Sony Z / Dell XPS 16
I don't actually have a Windows 15-inch right now, but the Z and XPS excellently fill in the upper and lower end of the functions of such a machine. To me, despite its relative popularity the 15-inch size is a little compromised: Too small to be a DTR and too heavy to be an actual all-day mobile companion.

Macbook Pro 17-inch -> Dell Precision M6400 Covet
Because if you're going big, there's no point in going half-assed. I also find the orange quite refreshing.

iMac -> ???
Maybe a Touchsmart or an XPS One - or an XPS Studio. I picked the iMac as I thought even Apple couldn't screw up a machine that'll be used about three times a week in the kitchen. So far I've been right about both the iMacs in that role.

Mini
I don't have either Apple or Windows equivalents of this right now. But Dell's Studio Hybrid is a decent alternative, as is the Studio XPS if you have more room on your table.

I'd do it with Ubuntu. :D

... and build a PC.

build my own desktop!

what happens to our current machines? do they vanish too? or do we get our money back!?!?

Yep...you were just posting on macrumors on your mac and POOF, the beautiful apple computer was gone. However, it did leave behind a nice chunck of cash to go purchase a PC. ( or in your case to build)

Build my own desktop. I actually haven't done that in awhile, I miss it, it's fun.
I know it is fun, haven't done it since 3rd grade.... picking out the parts and specs and putting them all together and hoping it works. :eek:
But haven't needed to since i got a mac...(bittersweet)

If I got my money back I would re-pimp my gaming PC with a better quad-core and crossfire videocards. Spent my last bit of upgrade cash on a watercooling system:(.

I'll build myself a desktop, and buy one of those silver HP netbooks that kind of look like macbooks (i forget the model number right now)

I'd buy two: one Dell that I would soak in lighter fluid and set alight, just to get something out of my system for being forced to buy a PC, then I'd go buy a Toshiba, wipe the drive and install OSX. :D

No Dells or Sonys for me again.. bad experiences w both.

I already have a Gateway CX2610 running xubuntu 8.10 and then I suppose if I didn't have this 17-inch MBP or my 13inch MB I would also get a netboook running Linux and build a custom box running Linux.

I would become the unibomber and buy a shack in Montana and never use technology again. :)

I used to love building my own PC's, but as time wore on I got tired of it. I just wanted to turn the thing on (and it works!) and sit down and use it. One of the reasons I switched.

I'd probably order a custom-config middle-of-the-road gaming PC for my desktop and a cheap HP laptop to goof off with away from my desk.

Thankfully, I don't have to worry about either right now. :)

If I just had one, it would be a Dell XPS M1330.

If I could have two, it would be a combination of a custom gaming PC and a Sony Vaio P.

hrmmm. good question. I would say ... Lenovo Thinkpad... best battery life out of a PC i have ever seen ... or a Toughbook. Either which way it would be hacked with osx on it :)

Ok I would build my own pc, which i do anyway. Run windows XP on it only for gaming then get a copy of PC-BSD for general use

Laptop, would have to either go with the IBM thinkpads there nice and sturdy or the toshiba laptop. Again, would debate getting rid of windows.
