Buy a DSLR and stop judging crappy cellphone pics for christsake.

I already have one. Several, in fact. But I don't carry them around with me when I'm going to the pub, and that reinforces all the more how poor the iPhone's camera is, even compared to the Sony Ericcson I had before my iPhone (which is now four years old).

haha that camera is horrendous haha that is ridiculous for a 3mp i would not be happy

I think that's the key.

A cell phone camera is something that you always have with you so you can take the quick snap shot. It's not expected to be a high quality photo that a DSLR will take.

Of course this will change in the future as the technologies in this area continue to improve.

In the meantime, I believe that the iPhone takes decent enough pictures for it's intended purpose.

i think the iphone camera has it's own 'unique-ness'. you can tell when someone took the picture on an iPhone. and that's cool for all the kids on facebook who want to be trendy :p

but honestly, are we really complaining about the iPhone??

haha seriously, Apple had to leave something to improve on!

although i do agree, that the camera is very slow - and has poor quality... i can live with that, because if something supppperrr exciting is happening - i'll bring a REAL camera.

hopefully the next version will include a on-par camera.

even if it doesn't, i'm still happy!

But it is expected to be a legible photo.

Pubs are badly lit, indoor areas. Hence the iPhone camera doesn't work, whereas many competing phone cameras will (because they have autofocus, a dedicated button so you don't shake trying to press it when the shutter is already struggling, you're able to alter the ISO and they have a flash).

The iPhone camera is considerably below average in this task. That's why it's no good.

Yeah, but the measure of a good camera isn't that it *can* take good pictures occassionally.

Again, I never said that the iPhone has a good camera. I was replying to a poster that said that his good pics taken with his LG Dare proved a point, that the iPhone's camera is bad and the Dare's is good. That's why I said that the iPhone CAN take good pics just like his Dare.

And I've checked that the LG Cookie I have is not broken, it's just cheap and has cheap parts.

In case anyone's interested here are more photos for comparison:

With bright lighting I think my iPhone does just fine! :)

The iPhone camera is okay for quick snaps.

The number of pixels is not necessarily indicative of the quality of the picture taken. So many other factors are just, if not more, important.

I never bought a new digital camera and decided to just use my iPhone when I got my iPhone 3G because I just snap shots while traveling etc. and I think it is just great and it is always with me and I love it :D

I'm not saying I don't want the next iPhone to have video recording and more mega-pixels and more importantly better optics and lense etc. but for a non-photography everyday camera it is great. :)

I like the iPhone's camera over my Bold. I also like it better than any 2.0mp or lower (released on AT&T).

You obviously never had the Sony-Ericsson W810i sold by Cingular just before the Cingular-->ATT name flip...2Mpixel WITH an autofocus (not to mention LED flash, digital zoom, and other less important features). Oh, and the lens was about twice the size of the iPhone's. Interestingly, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find an ATT non-smartphone since then which is better, actually...it was a remarkably good phone considering it was carried by a US carrier. Scratch that, it was a great phone, period. Yeah, and the Bluetooth wasn't crippled, the call quality was way better than the iPhone's, etc etc...but that's for another thread.

The iPhone camera is perfectly fine for daylight and even well-lit interiors.

Problem is, I want a cellphone camera for when my friends are acting like fools. This mostly occurs in dark bars or after 2am... At which time the iPhone camera is basically useless.

Just enough flash to light up people standing a few feet away and MMS - that's all I'm asking, Apple.
