3GS was a big upgrade over the 3G. The only thing the 3g did over version one was 3G networking.

3GS doubled the process speed, doubled the memory, added a GPS chip, added a compass, added video, boosted the battery, added voice control, and bumped up the camera to 3MP.

well in reality, the regular average joe who wanted an iphone saw that it looked exactly the same as the 3G, and didnt think it was a big upgrade

Actually iPhone 3G introduced GPS, not iPhone 3GS

Regardless, the 3GS was a substantial upgrade over the 3G.

I know personally, since i still have a 3G and the wifee got a 3GS in March. Hers is much faster. However, I am up for an upgrade, and she isn't... muhahahaha :D

You always need to hook it up to iTunes and go through the initial setup and activation.

Not a debate but I believe you are wrong per Apple's website.
Here is the read.

Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple, ready to use.

Whether you’re a new or existing AT&T customer, select your iPhone and sign up for a plan right here. Then have your iPhone shipped for free to your door and ready to use. Or reserve it for pickup at an Apple Retail Store and get free Personal Setup.

So, if you pick it up, it needs to be "setup". If you ship, it is "ready to use".

You will have to plug it in to iTunes. This will de-activate your current sim and activate the new sim (assuming you are keeping the same number). Otherwise how would ATT know when you start using your new phone? They're not going to have both sims running off of one phone number. Also- even if you didn't have to plug in, wouldn't you WANT to so you could transfer your apps?

This is in the FAQ on apple.com....

"Does my iPhone come ready to use?
Yes. Your new iPhone arrives ready to start using it. All you have to do is set it up in iTunes. There’s no need to call or visit a store to get started."

I think the phone itself once you turn it on and connect it to ATT network, will do the final activation? This is how other phones I have received from ATT work. It's like any other phone to a point.

Of course u sync for your personal stuff. But to simply use the phone I think it is power on and go.

So there is going to be turmoil on launch day afterall for people getting it shipped. Good luck.

What I was getting at is if you want to simply dial a number or surf the net, it should be ready to go?

Wait until the launch day. This is going to make the activation process on the first gen iPhone look like a cakewalk. I certainly hope everyone has a spare phone to use. I remember it took 3 days after the original launch for my iPhone to work. One would think they would have ironed out some of the problems after 3 years of this, but evidently not.

Good luck ladies and gentlemen

And this is why apple trying to force people to use a new Sim card every year is bad thing. It clogs AT&T and other system with crap activation that could be avoided. On all the other phones sold it is take out your old sim pop it into the new phone. Nothing has to be done on AT&T back end on it.

it is much easier on the system and does not risk crashing it.

Yeah haha. Gonna be fun- I have a feeling I will be at work while mine shows up so I am hoping that by the time I get home I can activate it. Maybe the fiasco will be a little calmer by then.

I highly doubt it will do anything out of the box- the sim it is being shipped with is useless until you plug it in to iTunes. Maybe wifi stuff will work but I don't think you will be able to make calls with it. I'm not 100% on that, but that's the way I am interpreting this sim to microsim transition.

I'll tell you guys that there is no way the new sim will work without it being activated through iTunes as the end user. The servers will be even more overwhelmed configuring all the new AT&T users and the current and long standing users.

I tried from 4amET to get this iteration of the iPhone, yet I have been recovering from an appendectomy since Sunday and my only means of trying to connect to either the apple store or the AT&T store is my 3g iPhone. Needless to say, that has not worked.

And at this point I am not sure I want to continue to support Apple and their piss poor attempts to launch a phone. To me it seems that they (apple) intentionally create a "limited supply/availability" to get free pub and increase the hype even more while completely leaving out their installed user base. I am just at the end of my patience dealing with Apple and vigilently trying to be responsible and even pre-ordering this phone. The problems of implementing this will be so bad next Friday, I very may wait until July or august to get the 4g if I get it at all. I just personally disagree with thier business model so vehemently.

Sorry for the rant but this is absolutely absurd and I know what launch day is going to bring. Just imagine a black Friday with toy stores and other places with very very limited stock. People would not stand for it at all.

Yes, I have the feeling that activation on Launch Day is going to be a major snafu. Every other year I've been lucky but if there is this much difficulty in even simply trying to reserve the bloody iPhone online, you know that there will be hassles on Launch Day with activation!

I honestly don't care if it takes a few days. I just care I get mine before July 21rst which is when I'm going on vacation. I wouldn't even bother with reserving one except for I keep hearing rumors of there already being a 3-4 week backlog and if it is that bad now, it would at least be that bad by the time the phone comes out which would cut it really close to me getting it before I leave.

Therefore, I'll try to get one opening day if I can to be sure I don't wait on the backlog.
