3GS was a big upgrade over the 3G. The only thing the 3g did over version one was 3G networking.
3GS doubled the process speed, doubled the memory, added a GPS chip, added a compass, added video, boosted the battery, added voice control, and bumped up the camera to 3MP.
Actually iPhone 3G introduced GPS, not iPhone 3GS
You always need to hook it up to iTunes and go through the initial setup and activation.
Not a debate but I believe you are wrong per Apple's website.
Here is the read.
Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple, ready to use.
Whether youre a new or existing AT&T customer, select your iPhone and sign up for a plan right here. Then have your iPhone shipped for free to your door and ready to use. Or reserve it for pickup at an Apple Retail Store and get free Personal Setup.
So, if you pick it up, it needs to be "setup". If you ship, it is "ready to use".
You will have to plug it in to iTunes. This will de-activate your current sim and activate the new sim (assuming you are keeping the same number). Otherwise how would ATT know when you start using your new phone? They're not going to have both sims running off of one phone number. Also- even if you didn't have to plug in, wouldn't you WANT to so you could transfer your apps?

This is in the FAQ on apple.com....
"Does my iPhone come ready to use?
Yes. Your new iPhone arrives ready to start using it. All you have to do is set it up in iTunes. There’s no need to call or visit a store to get started."
Wait until the launch day. This is going to make the activation process on the first gen iPhone look like a cakewalk. I certainly hope everyone has a spare phone to use. I remember it took 3 days after the original launch for my iPhone to work. One would think they would have ironed out some of the problems after 3 years of this, but evidently not.
Good luck ladies and gentlemen
So there is going to be turmoil on launch day afterall for people getting it shipped. Good luck.
What I was getting at is if you want to simply dial a number or surf the net, it should be ready to go?
I highly doubt it will do anything out of the box- the sim it is being shipped with is useless until you plug it in to iTunes. Maybe wifi stuff will work but I don't think you will be able to make calls with it. I'm not 100% on that, but that's the way I am interpreting this sim to microsim transition.
Yes, I have the feeling that activation on Launch Day is going to be a major snafu. Every other year I've been lucky but if there is this much difficulty in even simply trying to reserve the bloody iPhone online, you know that there will be hassles on Launch Day with activation!
