Dead serious not trying to advertise but to prevent this if you Ghost Armor the sides of the device it should completely eliminate this problem. Why the heck would apple allow such a cheap coating???!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

Think of it this way. If the phone is in your pocket, along with some coins or a key, over time, yeah, it will scuff as shown in the picture.

Not over time. Your phone will get scratched immediately if you keep it in the same pocket as your keys and coins.

But does your shield cover the beveled edges? They're so small of a surface area that I can't see any shield holding that angle without lifting over time.

like someone already said.....Take a coin edge and rub it on a phone what in the world did you expect??? Considering what they did it doesn't look that bad.

Yes it does I posted pictures on a replica IPhone5 earlier... if you search you can find them. I've mentioned this in other threads but it will literally last forever so long as you don't pick and pull them off and if you don't put it in super super tight areas daily

Just saw the thread and the photos.. And your product only covers the flat sides, not the beveled area where the problem is focused at.

Would it be possible to just scratch the whole thing off and have it be nice and uniform silver? That might look better than random scuff marks.

It doesn't look that bad. People won't be holding your phone up to a magnifying glass looking for scuffs. If you don't want your phone getting scuffed, get a case or don't use it. Or better yet, don't buy it.

it doesnt look that bad? what happens after a few months of use. it will look bad

Oh the bevel I see...... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....... I would suggest buy a bumper then. Just make sure its a bumper that has a soft insert on the inside. Jeez I am really frustrated now I am going to be so nervous about putting the phone in my pocket. Grrrr

thinking about this

I don't use a case, don't want to use a case, but I know over time the black will chip away and reveal random bits of the silver-looking aluminum underneath. I don't consider that to give it character or be "unique," I consider it to look sort of cheap and old.
Don't ever buy a new car. You'll go crazy when you get your first rock chip or curb rash.

Will it make me cancel my two pre-orders? No. Will the phone be less functional or awesome of a toy? No. But it's definitely something that could've been avoided, and it will definitely compromise the aesthetic appeal of this device.
If the "aesthetic appeal of this device" matters that much to you, then you're stupid for not cancelling your orders. As for the other people who ordered black iPhones, it's not your job to be looking out for them.

There's only so much you can do to keep your car pristine. Fact is, if you use it, things will happen well beyond your control that will cause scratches, chips, etc. "Acts of God" if you will (weather, potholes, idiots, etc.). My iPhone 4 is pristine, despite the fact that (1) I have dropped it numerous times, and (2) it has shared my pocket and backpack with lots of stuff that might have scratched a "lesser" phone. My 3G before that was also in perfect shape when I sold it (thanks to a case, in that instance).

This is a discussion board. It's to *discuss* topics, like this one. Not blindly endorse throwing our money at the richest company in the world and acting like they can do no wrong.

What do you think you're doing right now? You've got your panties in a bind over some potential scuffing issues that are obviously a big deal to you, yet you're still "blindly throwing your money at the richest company in the world". How exactly does that send a message to Apple that you're not satisfied with their products and why is that any kind of incentive for Apple to change things? Either way they've already got your money. If anyone is a sucker it's you - for caring about this issue so much you felt you had to post about it, yet you continue to buy these 'inferior' products.

Just put some car wax on the sides and back on the phone until you can get a good case. The car wax will provide a scuff resistant barrier. I'm sure my black phone will be without a case for a little while until more cases come available. I may stop by best buy and see if they will have any half way ok cases to make do until October when most cases come out.

I thought iFixit said that "We found that the side is pretty tough, but the chamfered edge can be susceptible to scuffing, making for a shiny streak on the side" so basically it is just the chamfered edge...well at least it is not the whole side! That is all I cared about.

Car wax does NOTHING to prevent scuffs or scratches. Where do you people get this misinformation?
