FAKE! We obviously don't have 2 dollar coins.

Why, no, Americans don't. But Australians do and they were the first country/timezone to realize the iPhone 5 today. So that's where iFixit went to go do their test. If they needed a coin to do their scuff tests, that may just happened to have been what the tester had had on him at the time.

Also, FYI, Canada also has a two dollar coin. The EU has a two euro coin.

Just because America is left in the dark doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I'm fairly certain that was sarcasm

What do you think you're doing right now? You've got your panties in a bind over some potential scuffing issues that are obviously a big deal to you, yet you're still "blindly throwing your money at the richest company in the world". How exactly does that send a message to Apple that you're not satisfied with their products and why is that any kind of incentive for Apple to change things? Either way they've already got your money. If anyone is a sucker it's you - for caring about this issue so much you felt you had to post about it, yet you continue to buy these 'inferior' products.

nobody knew about these defects in the paint when they were pre ordering the phones. apple made it seem like the coating is super strong.

So what? Doesn't change the fact that the OP knows about these 'defects' (in reality it's not a defect) now, yet didn't cancel his order. Taking delivery of an iPhone that you already have issues with makes absolutely no sense at all.

I'm going to use the black one for a couple of months if the scuffs are too extreme, i'm just gonna sell it and buy white one...
No problem at all!

why? im taking delivery tomorrow also and will test it for a few weeks and more than likely return it.

i dont see the resale value of black phones with marks all over them in a year very high..

Of course it will scratch easy, the itouch will be worst ! Its amazing how some people defend apple that much lol couple of people here when as far to say anodized aluminum was stronger that stainless steel.....

Why bother testing? Sounds like you're scrambling for any excuse to get the phone just to have it.

Again, the point - if scuffing bothers you that much that you would return the phone for that reason, why buy the phone in the first place? Cancel your order and get the white model. Or get a different phone altogether.

because i want to test it on my own to see if what i normally do with my 4(dont have any scratches over 2+ years) will cause this.
not scrambling...
im going to do the testing on my own and if it happens with the way i use it then i will get the white phone. i have 30 days.

Wow, the level of willfull blindness and fanboyism here is astonishing.

My issue is with Apple selling something that it knew to be subpar (don't get me started on iOS 6 and Maps). I need a new phone, I'm pretty deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem. I preordered the iPhone 5 because I was due for an upgrade, could upgrade, and the phone appeared to be defect-free. I do consider scuffing within days through normal wear and tear to be something of a defect, but it's not a dealbreaker at this point.

It's downright silly to think I would cancel my preorder based on this, but yeah, I will hang on to my receipt and see what happens in the first 30 days. Functionality is paramount of course, but form is also important to me (and others - call me vain).

We'll see how things shake out. I remember when the 4 came out, people were FIGHTING SO HARD TO DENY the antenna problem, until lo and behold, Apple recognized the issue. Feels a bit like that all over again.

I can't believe how tolerant you guys are. I dropped my iPhone 4 many times even on concrete and thankfully only the band and the plastic around the glass dented.

However there is a difference between aging nicely and aging poorly. The dents on my 4 still give it character and doesn't detract from the look and are barely noticeable.

What I'm seeing from the 5 is that it's much more easy to scratch even if you don't drop it. Furthermore, once it scratches, you get an uneven silver edge on the black. That just smells of poor quality. I don't expect a high end smartphone to loose it's colour start chipping.

Doesn't seem like the Verge had any issues with their black phone. From their review:

Apple moved the headphone jack to the bottom of the phone, which is a welcome change in my opinion. It also slightly tweaked some of the details on the device, like the grid on the speakers and the more polished, streamlined beveled edges on the sides of the phone. The mirrored, angular rims give the phone a glint akin to jewelry (something I noted in my first hands-on with the device).

In all, while the iPhone 5 might look familiar, the sheer attention to fit and finish in its build lends it a sense of quality and craftsmanship that far too many devices lack. The new design — particularly the black version, which has a kind of sinister simplicity to it — is truly something to behold.

Oh Christ people. They took a coin to the side of the damn thing. What did you expect was going to happen? Non-issue.
