The 12 Mini definitely does this too in landscape, it is just much harder to see. At least i would never notice it, without actively looking for it. (Also rarely ever use the Mini in landscape)

The iPad Mini 6 on the other hand is so pronounced that i see it even if i don't want to.
I never noticed but you’re right! Glad I never use phone in that orientation. Is so horrible to look at. Absolutely couldn’t live with that on an iPad.

The scary thing to me is that either a) nobody at Apple noticed or cared about this during testing or b) saw it and decided it was ok. Not the Apple I know.

My thoughts exactly..

Even more sinister - maybe they full well knew all throughout design that they'd be stepping down the panel quality slightly to get lower component pricing..

Just feels gross.
Really disappointing from Apple on this.

I wonder if maybe the refresh direction was intentional, as the device is intended to be used primarily in landscape?

Nobody told Apple marketing then.
It's constantly in portrait in promotional materials, marketing hits, at the Apple stores, etc.

There are zero excuses and completely unacceptable given the price hike on this Mini.

That's the other key thing...
The Mini got a 25% price hike -- and then they do this with the screen?
Ridiculous Apple - just ridiculous

Same here. I still can't see it on mine. People these days.....

Be happy you can't see it!
Don't disparage those that can and are bothered by ---
Literally just be happy it's not impacting you!

Is there any reason to believe that a screen refreshing in one direction is cheaper to produce than a screen that refreshes in a different direction?

Currently we are relying on ifixit and their comments.

I do value that source and their expertise and in my view, their opinion carries more weight than just normal commenters and reviewers on something like this.

Does Apple expect people to use the iPad Mini primarily in horizontal orientation, and how does that compare to real world usage?

Tried everything to see the effect on my 3 day old mini6. Even filmed it in super slowmo 960fps. nothing. What IS annoying is the 2" gap left and right on the screen and loss of app icons when you put a widget up, even the widget does not look right. I transfered from my mini 5 strait to the 6 and it makes the screen look way smaller. Horrible. Way better on the mini 5. Shame, wasted screen. If you only have 8,3", why only use 7"?

I love my mini... cant say enough great things about it. I didnt notice this effect until it was pointed out regardless of hours of usage..... same goes for my wife. The only time I notice this effect is if Im in portrait and I 'rapidly' scroll. Natural scrolling is no issue at all. Now, if I am 'rapidly' scrolling, then what difference does the jelly effect matter in the first place. So far as I can tell this anomaly is only obvious when you're doing something kinda unnatural. I mean its not like you're trying to read txt while abruptly/aggressively scrolling up and down. Nothing burger.

lol, guys
I think you all lost the chance to complain about this when you accepted to move from CRT’s to LCD displays

That’s just how the technology works, as the video states you can mitigate it by refreshing faster (iPad pro) but you can’t get rid of it. It’s just how LCD’s refresh.

OnePlus went through the same nonsense with the OP6 (I believe), with many people claiming OnePlus mounted the display “upside down” as if it was an accident lol

Technology has its quirks, as we move to different and better ways to do things we make trade offs along the way, anyone who complains about this should really take a look around Blur Busters and see the kind of crazy stuff LCD’s have to do in order to reach the same amount of clarity in motion that CRT’s just got for free.
It’s fascinating, really

What about a $1299+ device?

Not ideal, not my favorite aspect of my new toy (the MacBook and iPad mini), but not a 1st world problem ( for me at least). It is all an artifact of a sequential refresh as opposed to global LCD refresh.

Video of my M1 MacBook Pro, and my iPad Pro 11" (2018) showing their jello.
It looks like normal screen not having super low response time rather than jelly effect shown on those iPad mini 6 videos.

They are definitely pushing it that. Main page has the mini in portrait mode but “mini” scripted in horizontal. Always thought that was weird from the event. “Hold it this way”

Right. Most iPad users use iPad in predominantly in the landscape orientation, let alone scrolling at a speed where the problem would be all that noticeable to begin with.

In an ideal world, Apple will also make iPad Pro mini (and 11" iPad Pro) with XDR.
What makes you think that most people predominantly use iPads in landscape?

Marketing was well aware. Hold it landscape.

Which may be an artifact of how the 60fps 1080p recording happens on the iPhone 11 pro. Regardless the effect on the M1 macbook pro actually looks worse than my mini.

Fact remains, the issue is on both devices alongside my mini 6. None of these devices use global refresh.

I went to Best Buy today to see what all the fuss was about. I played with the only mini on display and fell in love with it! The form factor is awesome and the screen is a good size! I tested it on portrait mode and landscape mode. I knew what I was looking for but I really had to look for it and not even sure If I saw anything wrong with the iPad. Now… I have the 12.9 M1 Pro and I know the iPad mini’s screen will not refresh as smoothly as my 12.9… but I want one!!!
