That actually could be pretty slick. Having a tag that could be recharged simply by holding your phone near it for a bit.
This.

Apple may use some type of specialty wireless charging for the tag (think Apple Watch), that lets you charge the tags ONLY on the back of an iPhone.

I think it is unlikely the tags will be rechargeable, much less wirelessly rechargeable. Remember, putting wireless charging coils & circuits in the AirPods case raises their price by US$40. I don't want to be paying $75 per tag.

Hmmmm.... good point.
But, those need BOTH as an option.
If there’s no lightning to charge & only wireless- I assume that would be cheaper.

Yep, Apple plans its rationing years in advance, instead of blowing its load all at once. Makes sense.

However, personally I couldn't give a chit whether they finally include that wireless charging feature or not. Why? Cuz I'm not about to spend US$40/CAD$50 more just to get a wireless charger with my AirPods, esp. since I'll be getting a USB-C iPad Pro soon, and maybe even a USB-C iPhone next year. I'd be happy to charge via USB-C from the iPad to Lightning on the AirPods. Or even better, USB-C to USB-C.

ie. In 2020 I'd be happy with 128 GB storage and USB-C in a 6.7" 5G OLED iPhone.
I don’t think they would add everything that we want next year on the next iPhone. I hope they do, but they probably won’t.

I’m talking about 5G, USB-C, 120 hz refresh rate, bilateral charging, etc. I just can’t see it happening. I really hope so, though!

Yeah, but the 2020 iPhones will definitely get 5G and I could see it getting USB-C as well, and maybe even 128 GB entry level. 120 Hz would be a bonus, and I don't care at all about bidrectional charging. The other question mark is 6 GB RAM. I'm not convinced the 2020 models will get 6 GB but it's possible.

They didn’t speak about the Ram. The last rumors was that maybe, we have 4Gb for the iPhone, but maybe we have 2Gb of Ram extra only for the cameras. It’s official?
Would be difficult for ifixit-level analysis to determine, since extra ram would likely be buried inside a multi-chip module.

The 2020 iPhones should be pretty feature packed if all the rumours end up being true. I’d love to see 120hz ProMotion display. I would also like to see Portrait mode improved with a dedicated ToF sensor so there is better subject isolation. I’d also Like a 100mm-150mm equivalent telephoto lens. The last thing I’d like to see is no notch. Fingers crossed :)

Doubt we’ll get a fourth lens for another couple years, but if we do I suspect you’d be looking at something more like 85-90mm, and f>2.8.

I believe once they announce their new “Apple Tag” product in October (possibly), the bilateral wireless charging will be enabled through an iOS update. Maybe it will only work on the Apple tags for now and that’s why the feature is disabled for the time being... just a guess.

That'd make sense - i thought about that too, but rumors were pointing to the tag using a conventional button cell battery.

How did bilateral become the word. That’s just... wrong. Bidirectional yes. Bilateral - terrible. Bilateral refers to different sides of an object in the same plane. This features allows the coil to receive charge and charge. That’s bidirectional or some other better word.

nah, that's not the only meaning of it. E.g. it can also describe therelationship between two countries. Or just the relationship between two parties. E.g.: "bilateral agreement"

but you're right, bidirectional would be a better term.

Good point.

Rene Ritchie is such an Apple shill. He should really be embarrassed but I guess he has zero shame.

B

Because they are lying through Rene Ritchie, shill extraordinaire.
Rene Ritchie is the biggest iBuffoon to ever grace this planet. Nilay Patel or Joshua Topolsky were far better than him.

“However, iFixit notes that Apple published documentationindicating that the iPhone 11 Pro Max has new hardware for tracking battery performance, and that may be an alternative explanation.”

Weird that two persons that sounds so mature and civil like you two may be probably wrong...

Additional tidbit, it was reported that Steve Jobs assisted in designing iPhones after the 4s up to iPhone 6.

There’s no chance Steve would have had a hand in an abomination like the iPhone 6. He would never have allowed such a huge phone.

Rene is certainly a ”fanboy” but wasn’t it Nilay Patel who wore the leather studded bracelet and complained that Apple had no fashion sense or something?

YES! Hahaha I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that...and then he pitched a fit when someone called him out 😂

Article states "Bilateral wireless charging would have allowed the new iPhones to wirelessly charge devices like the AirPods, the Apple Watch, and even other iPhones."

Could it have really charged the Apple Watch since it does not use the standard Qi? I assumed it would only charge other phones and AirPods only.
Curiously, you can use the apple watch h charger to charge any qi compatible device. the watch must have a specific lock down to not work with qi chargers.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned before but for someone who travels a bit, bilateral charging would really help to reduce the number of cords necessary to travel with. For example, if bilateral charging was only enabled while the phone was plugged in, it would be able to act as a charging mat for my watch perhaps.

This would be an awesome feature, allowing the phone to charge the watch or AirPods...but not other phones!...Theres no way I'm giving up my charge for someone's phone.

if wireless charging was never announced to begin with, surly apple could have not released the phone while they modified it

All they care about if getting it out 'on time' .If this was a security update, things would have been very different.

For a company who reckons their on top of the game, they do slip up a few times.

So people are bagging on Rene Ritchie because he’s not engaging in wishcasting? Whether one thinks he’s an Apple shill or not he‘s going to be more in the know than someone at iFixit. No little birdies inside Apple are tapping iFixit on the shoulder.
