eh - weak sauce

There are endless Chinese parts accomplishing this easily.
Apple could do it no problem - trivial for them

Well then Apple is doing it out of convenience and/or spite, but they're reversing themselves on a number of these decisions as of late (the ASD itself being one of them), so maybe down the road they will bring back TDM in a future monitor. *shrug*

I both appreciate apple’s re-entry into the monitor space, but this isn’t a device that’s going to get me away from the LG 5K… I really wanted something in the 32” 6K space for $1500-2000, though that may be dreaming.
Why would they undercut their own ProDisplay XDR product? Do you think they are making a $3000 profit on each one of those?

This whole debate is insanity! I want an aluminum 32" OLED 8K 240hz HDR ProMotion DolbyVision+DolbyAtmos touchscreen monitor running full iPadOS and a Playstation 5 built-in for $500!!!!!!! People would still complain!

Go watch the MaxTech review. It’s very clear.

You cannot judge the quality of a display by looking at it through YouTube. What you see on your screen is different than mine, which is different than what the person in the room sees. Way too many variables. In order to do this without objective measurements, you would have to hear opinions across several reviews and see what the most consistent comment is. From my reading and watching of reviews, the consensus seems to say that the contrast is better on the ASD compared to the LG UltraFine (likely due to Apple's superior glossy screen). There are not a ton of comparisons to the iMac to draw many conclusions.

I curious on measurements -- video reviews are subject to all sorts of issues.
Good for "impressions", but not for rigorous comparison of values that can (and should) be measured

Hopefully this gets critically measured so actual improvements are quantified

I have seen both in person. The ASD is far nicer.

Without looking it up, as I recall their margins are in the neighborhood of 40%. So, they are likely making a decent chunk of change on the XDR, but no not $3000.

Far "nicer" -- hmm. Ok

Please understand that just the glass layering on a given design can cause some visible differences here.

We still don't have data showing a different display panel component.
Maybe soon? Someone will get to the bottom of it

Can someone explain why having an internal power supply such a feat of engineering? And why did it require a 50% thicker chasis? My much more power-hungry 27" Intel iMac already has an internal power supply -- is it such a feat they were able to do for a monitor here?
Agreed. I'm all for internal power supplies, but it's not of note given that the similar iMac also had an internal power supply. I don't get it.

As for the Apple Studio Display being "nicer" than the LG UltraFine 5K, the general consensus given by reviewers and owners who have both displays is that:
  1. The Studio Display's glass outer coating is better at handling reflections and not interfering with image quality (color, contrast, sharpness) compared to the LG's plastic coating.
  2. The Studio Display's aluminum frame is higher quality in construction and strength than the plastic frame of the LG.
  3. The Studio Display's stand, while not offering rotation nor offering as much height adjustment as the Apple optional stand, is much more stable and prevents the monitor from wobbling when the desk is jostled.

So as we all knew it's pretty much the 27" iMac with an updated case, speakers and camera. But they ripped out the entire computer and replaced it with an A-series CPU and the price barely budged. I still stand by the first statement that this is a total rip-off for $1599. It should be priced at $999.

Hah asking people which is a display vs which is a computer? If you were unaware of the two products it might be hard to tell by simply looking at it with the display removed. It does indeed look like the 27” display could have been a iMac.
I have a hard time believing that these people haven’t seen the 24 inch color iMac at this point.

What was the need to in built the power supply into the display, it increases engineering costs which comes down to consumers. Just give us an external power supply brick and lower the price. No doubt its an amazing engineering feat to make it slim!

wanna bet they could easily put M1 there and cool the damn thing? thats how iMac should look like.

No chin some people wanted just a display. I don’t see what’s wrong with not wanting an all in one. Apples made an m1 iMac. We all know they can do it.

It your not so much into Apple Mac products, there are people that yeah have little exposure. One could say they just use what their work provides with little interest in the computer tech marketplace.

But these specific people, that have the job of tearing apart tech. At a company that actively complains about apples repairability. I don’t think so. In any other space I would totally agree with you.
