Obnoxious much...
Why does everyone on here get so pissy at each other so easily these days? I seriously don't understand you people. It was just a question. I spent a good deal of time over the weekend helping someone on the forums pick out MacBooks for all of their kids and wife based on their budget and individual user needs and did it gladly. You guys need an attitude adjustment. This is a community of Apple enthusiasts. It's no wonder we get a bad reputation.

Thank you for the info regardless.

Seven Hells! My 2011 17" MBP is is a joy to work on compared to this thing. It's a worthy sacrifice for portability, but I fear ALL of the new MBPs are just as hostile to tinkering and repairs.

A proprietary PCIe SSD?... this is a joke. Other companies are hitting 2.5Lb with no need to do this. Now the 3rd market is going to be as bad as Apple's prices. this just keeps getting more insane as we go. It is a 1500 underpowered money trap.

If you bought a coffee and the barista forgot to give you your change, barking "change please" would come across as rude.

As did "source please".

But, water under the bridge - iFixit should just do better research next time.

Great machine!!!!... My 17 had the motherboard fail - in my tech closet - Or as I call it: Hall of fame :)

This. I fully expect OWC to jump on a SSD upgrade path for the new MBPs, assuming of course that the 13" Touch Bar and 15" models also have removable SSDs. I opted for 1TB when I submitted my order because I could not justify the price of the 2TB option. I fully expect OWC to have 1.5TB and 2TB options in the near future if the architecture allows.

I'd be interested in seeing how long it takes them to make a new one. I bought & installed an OWC SSD for a MBA for a coworker. Got the external case for her old drive as well. Both work well. Unfortunately, it looks like the new rMBPs are gonna be a bit more of a bear to swap out, though.

I think I'll wait a while before upgrading. My late 2013 is working well for my needs; plus, I want a laptop with a builtin SD card reader. I don't like needing a bunch of dongles.

I never appreciated this when it was new, but it has the ability to simultaneously charge, backup to an external USB HDD, and read an SD card, all without extra dongles or dinguses.

Have you not noticed this change in the last 3+ years that it has been the case in the MBP line?

I am confused here, can someone help me out?

The 13" without touch bar has a 15W CPU and a bigger battery
The 13" with touch bar has a 28W CPU and a smaller battery.

Yet these both claim 10 hours, this can't be right.
Yea, its not that big of battery difference.

But I have to imagine the average power draw on the CPU is significant.

How is it barking to say please? You had responded to my message and said to see your original post. You reached out to me. That post lacked information explaining why you thought so or any source for this information. You have some warped view of people if you think saying please is rude. Who did this to you so I can go sort them out?

It would be great if Apple split their lines like they used to. There should be an "Air" line that focuses on thinness, lightness and portability, and a separate "Pro" line that has the top specs, battery life and upgrade ability.

In my office, we use laptops because we often collaborate outside of our desks, but for most people travel with them is limited, so battery life and function is more important than being light.

It's disappointing that rather than all-day battery life, or more memory capacity, Apple is making choices on their "Pro" product that puts form above function.

As @keysofanxiety alluded to, the non-Touch Bar model has one fan, and no vents in the sides of the chassis (image from iFixit).

The Touch Bar models, by contrast, have two fans and retain the vents in the chassis, as shown below (image from Apple).

In the design video, Jony Ive talks about "variably-spaced fan blades" pushing air "through a nearly-solid enclosure". Now, only the 15-inch MacBook Pro has variably-spaced blades (as per Apple.com), so he was obviously discussing the 15-inch model in this point of the video devoted to talking about thermals.

We can reasonably assume, given 1) the lack of vents on the non-Touch Bar model, 2) Ive's video obviously only referencing a Touch Bar model, and 3) iFixit's findings that basically nothing has changed thermally in the non-Touch Bar model, that the new thermal architecture is exclusive to the Touch Bar models.

where does apple say the variably spaced fan blades are only on 15"

also variably spaced fan blades were on the old 13" and 15" models right?

anyone have any info, on how much that helps with noise reduction vs how much marketing hype it is.
thanks

The only difference is, now you've got to upgrade on purchase. No after market upgrades anymore.

Would love to see iFixit or Anandtech do a proper benchmark test for temperatures to see how "advanced" any of them are nowadays. My cheap Windows PC costing less than half the comparable MBP gets up to 78C under load. My 5 year high end gaming laptop (i7) got to 76C under load (the comparable MBP of the time got to 98C)...

I'm still with my 2011 MacBook Pro and it's still a solid machine, using it day-in, day-out. Since putting in a Samsung Evo 850 SSD a few months ago, it feels like a new machine and runs very fast. Any performance improvements with the latest MacBook Pros aren't significant enough to warrant a new purchase for me especially when considering the price we have to pay for the 2016 models.

Early 2011 MBP here, except mine is a 13", i5 CPU. Samsung EVO 850 SSD and 16 GB RAM.. I use it for very basic stuff (I don't even edit documents.. shame?) and iTunes backup for my iDevices.. It will probably endure for other 5 good years, at least..

I'm always tempted to the get a new MBP, but Apple indecent prices here in Brazil just push me away.. No user upgradeable RAM or SSD.. and I didn't even mentioned the dongles!!!

Best of both worlds - off the shelf hardware, proprietary "experience" (vendor lock-in, contrary to all the blab about "open" they otherwise claim. :D )

Eww, they're flaunting heterosexual filth.

think of the mark up they would be able to get away with

$900 sounds about right. :|

I actually kind of wish they made a high-end 15 escape version without the touchbar. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I know a lot of people will love the touchbar, but I had a laptop with a "touchbar" once.. while it wasn't as advanced and pretty as apple's one, but having to look down to see what "context" and buttons are lit up, was so gimmicky and annoying, I was glad to get rid of the laptop.

But then again, I know where all my keys are on the keyboard and never look down. I'm sure for all the folks that look for the brightness, and f-keys, that bar will make sense.

Any hope of a maxed out 15 without the touchbar? Probably not..huh

??? You don't have to use the touchbar.
you don't have to look down to see what context appears. you can just ignore it and use the computer how you normally would. The touchbar doesn't replace on screen controls, its just an addition.

also, I don't see how looking at the touch bar is much different from looking at the bottom the screen?

Finally, you seriously can't compare another OEMs touch bar to this lol.

All this said, I probably will not be a big user of the touch bar personally

I love these tear downs, I learn so much in how Apple puts these computers together, the new keyboard looks more impressive now then when I first heard about it, so maybe I'll check it out at my local apple store.

How would I change brightness? How would I use the f-keys (I know most people don't)? Volume? Next track, play, pause? All that stuff moves around so I'll HAVE to look at the bar.

And yeah, I agree, can't compare. While execution is different idea is the same :( Just because it will be more responsive, and prettier, doesn't change what it does.

From what I can see though, it seems like you can customize it. So maybe that's not bad.

Maybe I'm torn and being stupid. At the same time, some of the context stuff on x-code looks nice. So you don't have to hunt down menus, but I kind of already remapped all the functions I need with shortcut keys.

What are your honest thoughts? I know it's impossible without trying, but just wondering.

I actually played with it yesterday. The keyboard does feel different. I wasn't so against the MacBook one, but man, this one is NICE. It has more travel and a more satisfying click on each press. The keys on my MacBook Pro right now feel mushy compared to the new ones. Like I'm using one of those rubber keyboards.

I've also tried the new keyboard. It's pretty good. Actually I think I like it even better than the one in my Macbook Air , it has a very precise feel to it.
