NFC is not an antenna. It is simply a means of transmitting data over a short distance

That's not correct. NFC doesn't simply use your phone's existing antennas. It does require it's own (very small) antennas for both reception and transmission. The technology is very similar to RFID, which uses one powered transmitting device to induce a signal in an unpowered receiver device. NFC is similar, but pairs both a transmitter and receiver in each (powered) device.

I've been out of the electrical engineering game for years now, so perhaps someone else has a more thorough explanation.

Multiple sources may say that it is 2GB

My point is saying this "teardown reveals 2GB of RAM" IS NOT ACCURATE.

This teardown gives you an unsearchable part number and the fact that there are 2.

iFixit themselves didn't even say (it appears to be 2 1GB modules) or anything of the sort, which they usually do. Since the part can't be searched they said nothing about capacity.

So this teardown reveals nothing about the actual amount of RAM.

I see. You basically want someone to hold your hand otherwise you feel insecure. Ok, go ahead and stir some troubles around here. It's ok, we will now accept you among all of us. Diversity, right?

Why are you insulting other iPad users for wanting better battery life?

Wouldn't that be the same as asking why some of you insult people for wanting thinner iPads? Many on here act like it is idiotic to make the devices thinner. Well, just like there are people that want longer battery life, there are also people that want a device that is more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time.

Once a week? do you even use the thing?

I have three ipads in my house. Two are charged nightly- one of which is oten charged during the day as well. Third is charged every other day.

My iphone is charged twice a day. My macbook is charged once/twice a day. my boys iphone4 - no sim - is charged two to three times a day. I should soure a battery for htat one seeing as I can actually swap it out resonably easily.

----------

So using the ipad is massive use? Does hte normal person purchase a device to not use?

I don't use it very much, no. Like many reviewers, I find iOS to be insufficiently useful on a large tablet. However, you're doing way too much charging. You may want to examine your usage patterns to see why you're consistently using so much battery power. Perhaps you're leaving apps running in the background.

i admit that i was wrong about apple...at least with iPad air 2...others...well...my accusation upon apple remains...

Thinness helps, I think the original Air is much more comfortable to hold than the 2 beyond the weight savings. And I'm pretty sure Apple would have made the Air 2 lighter if they could, the tech probably wasn't there (for the cost, anyway). Still needs a certain amount of metal and glass and battery right now to be practical.

Apple can make these lighter. The reason that they don't make a big job is so they can add something next year. The tech is already there they just don't want to put it all out so they can add it the following year. I'm sure most companies have a timeline of the technology they have ready but won't release it because of profit.

Why is this hard to understand? If you use it for web browsing, it will last all day. If you use it for playing games or other highly demanding processes, it will chew through the battery in a few hours.

How is that any different to an iPhone, or a Macbook???

Yes, Apple made a decision to make it thinner, instead of increasing the battery life. You, and others, disagree with that decision. So either don't buy it, or buy an external battery for it. It is not the end of the world, or the end of Apple.

Of course it uses its own antenna. But my point is it is not an antenna by itself, as your statement suggested.

For the name of god people, enough with the slim-rage.
It's got 11.5 hours of battery life. Not good enough for you ?

the fact that it could be slightly thicker and get 20 hours of battery life, yeah that bothers me.

Mac mini bro. Also I'm not taking about the board. The A8 could be what houses the nfc.

What does the Mac mini have to do with this? And the A8 does not have anything to do with NFC. The NXP chip does.

All I am saying is the chip isn't useless; Apple didn't install it for no reason. My best guess is that they're using it for its secure element

No. If that was the case, there would be no reason for companies like Samsung or Google to pull out all their tricks now, and release a product that is vastly superior to the iPad in every way. They would benefit from the increased sales far more than their lost profits per device.

Just because a company like Apple or Intel know what they will be providing next year, or the year after, does not mean they are holding things back. They simply are guessing what will be possible to make once technologies that are presently in research and development become feasible for mass production.

I just don't see why you have to resort to namecalling. Seems rather childish.

Lack of RAM in iDevices is a perfectly valid complaint that need to be addressed by Apple. Just because they say their devices work fine with 1GB doesn't mean they wouldn't run better with 2GB. (Feel free to ask Safari all about that.)

And the common complaint from people wanting bigger batteries in lieu of smaller devices is also a perfectly valid complaint.

Just because you don't share their opinion doesn't make them wrong.
Thank you. Certain fanboys are beyond deluded - believeing apple as being infallible

Im doing way too much charging? wouldnt that be like me claiming you do way too little?

I use the device, the battery discharges, i charge it. Its a strange circle.

And yes, even though the usual like of this forums is that apps in the background do not use power, i kill nearly everything consistently (that is not in current use) as many apps - including apples own - are battery hogs.

Iphone battery life went up this year after years of bouncing around the same time zone. Ipad has been improving each year until this year.

IF apple brought out a ,macbook air next year htat had a worse battery life than this years model, i would complain abpout that as well.

Oh apple wont fail nor will the world end

But so far this year apple has lost an upgrade of two iphones, a macbook, a macbook mini and two ipads. Somewhere in the region of 6000+USD as I buy outright.

Somebody is going to get my money.

What are you TALKING ABOUT,,, easier to hold???? What???? It is already EASY TO HOLD... Ummm,,, If the Battery does not last longer,,, being easier to hold for extended periods of time won't matter.

My son, is on the Spectrum (Autism) we rely HEAVY on the iPad,,, he has the 1st Gen Air. We still have to plug it in late afternoon. He's 9,,, has no problem holding for Extended Periods of time. It's sort of like TV's.. They keep making them thinner and thinner. If your hanging them up on a wall, does 2 inches thick and 4 inches thick matter??? God No.. unless you put your head to the wall and look at it, you'd never be able to tell. It's all selling points,,,,

If the Footprint is the same,,, being thin is not as important. YIKES‼!

Then perhaps you have something wrong with your device.

Iphone battery life went up this year after years of bouncing around the same time zone. Ipad has been improving each year until this year.

iPhone battery life improved because they got much bigger, and the computational power did not improve significantly. Neither of those points apply to the new iPad.

IF apple brought out a ,macbook air next year htat had a worse battery life than this years model, i would complain abpout that as well.

Even if next year's MBA had a quad-core CPU, and high end dedicated GPU?

Oh apple wont fail nor will the world end

And Apple have almost certainly gained more from people who prefer thinner and more powerful, than lost from people who just want more battery. Especially as more battery can be purchased after market through external charge packs, whereas thinness and speed cannot.

The funny thing is, I would probably prefer a little more battery and a little thicker, especially in the MBP. But I don't care that much, and after something like 7 years of relentless "thinnovation", I don't understand why people still expect anything different.

Why are you insulting other iPad users for wanting better battery life?

Most people don't use any device for more than a few hours a day. Apple is not creating products for people who spend 11 hours in front of a tablet without finding a power outlet or PC for power.... Why is this even a discussion? The thinness and lightness of the device are paramount.....

All for thinness that matters little. Bet many would've gladly take the previous gen's depth + the bigger battery.

Luckily for those many, they can do just that and grab the Ir 1 and save $100. It's great to have options!

----------

The battery on the iPad Air 2 is a fail in my opinion, how about making it thinner and also 1 hour more battery. To say it's thinner and also retains the same battery is not spectacular. If they made it thinner and also increased battery by 1 hr now that would be "wow"

With every new iPad, they should be bragging that it last's longer than the previous iPad not that it stays the same. It's so odd that they keep making the battery smaller, the device thinner and battery still sucks. I don't get it.

I'm waiting for the time when the keynote says: "The #1 item our customer's are asking for is longer battery"

You might be waiting some time. For the iPad at least I've not heard anyone I know complain about battery. On a device like that, 10 hours or 11 hours doesn't make much difference to normal people. I have heard complaints about the weight and size of previous iPads. If anything, I think irdinary custoners care more about weight and size.

First of all, they are almost at the point where thinner doesn't equal better. I don't want to be able to break my device just by putting it down. Look at the iPhone 6 Plus. They could have made that camera flush with the back, but they wanted thinner, thinner. So iPhone 7, go thinner, and have ports and lenses sticking out. We had the start of bendgate, which went nowhere, but make it thinner, and you'll have bend/breakgate. I don't want my device so thin I worry about breaking it. I used to have an iPod Touch, late generation. And I said, if they can get the phone this thin, that's enough for me. I don't know the 6 vs iPod Touch, but it has to be getting close.
