So if youre not using itunes.. like via avplayer or IFILE/ipod app or some other file player that supports airplay you can still stream to more then one speaker because its not through itunes?

No. Airplay from an iDevice is limited to one device.

Damn this speaker is pretty much pointless then lol unless I have a file in my itunes library on my laptop it cant be played across multiple speakers -__- deal breaker

iTunes on a desktop computer playback to more then one Airplay speaker at a time. iOS can only playback to one at a time.

Still, if you are on a (handheld) idevice you can still switch as you change location from room a to room b. Don't get what makes it pointless: if you want to listen to music everywhere at once - use a computer (possibly w/ remote app) otherwise change ur idevice's speaker (one or two taps) as you move along... Why keep speakers running if u r not in that room anyway????

at 300+ a pop I would expect a little more for the pr, if youre going to spend 1200 on 4 speakers that dont even play at the same time unless its from a laptop your either crazy or have money to waste

According to the iHome web page, playing multiple iW1 speakers is possible.

"Add multiple iW1 speakers throughout your home and with AirPlay enjoy music from any or all of your speakers, simultaneously."

Am I missing something?

Not really - it's an Airplay limitation. If you're on a computer, you can play to as many Airplay devices as you like. If you're on an iOS device, you can only play to one.

I'm sure there is a jailbreak in the works for it.

And if not, it isn't iHome's fault - it's an iOS limitation.

As more Airplay speakers are released, consumers will complain, and hopefully Apple will release a firmware update addressing the problem.

Apple TV?

How about simultaneously streaming to Apple TV 2 (e.g., for indoor speakers) and iw1 speakers (e.g., for outdoor speakers) during a party? From a mac? From an iphone or ipad?

A computer running iTunes can sound to both a iW1 and an Apple TV at the same time. It can stream video to only one Apple TV at a time via Airplay. iOS can only stream to one Airplay device at a time. No matter if its an Apple TV, Airport Express, or a iW1.

I am guessing they have been holding off because airplay in iOS 4 has been a little buggy so September corresponds with when iOS 5 is released. I have been waiting as well and if the reviews are good I am definitely getting one. I want to be able to just pick it up and move it to whatever room I am going to or even outside.

iHome CSR says it's on hold, but a few weeks ago they were given a September release.

Not really sure what the hold up is, but since there really isn't any other competition out there, its best they got it right. My tinny iPad speakers will have to do for now.

Unless the prices have changed on these units, it doesn't seem to make sense anymore. I'd rather pick up Sonos Play:3's to put around the house. They seem like they'd be more useful.

Seriously, I understand going with Airplay for just one room but Sonos makes much more sense for streaming in multiple locations at once.

Question about Sonos vs. iW1

I see lots of people mentioning that Sonos does more because it supports spotify, MOG, etc. Can't the iW1 do the same? I should be able to open Spotify on my phone and send to airplay.

I don't have a Sonos, but I'm seriously considering buying the iW1. I want something that I can play my audiobooks, podcasts (from a 3rd party iPhone app), and music on. I would prefer it be battery powered, and I doubt I will buy more than 1 to put in different rooms (that's why I prefer battery...)

The iW1 is cheaper and should allow me to airplay any audio from my iphone to it. Someone give me some perspective on how this compares to the Sonos system.

Wouldn't getting the Geneva model S mean no battery and a 'hacked' Airplay implementation similar to the Sonos?

I think I'd rather the features of a Sonos rather than the notch up in quality. Unless I'm missing something, it's still Sonos vs iW1...

Why not buy the Geneva model S and an airport express for ~$80 more and have far superior sound?
Why do all of this when I just want to be able to listen to my music.

Push a button and enjoy. Move speaker - wash, rinse, repeat.

No need for any external hardware, just the iOS device, iW1 and a wifi connection.

anyone know how you actually buy this?
i can't see a link to add to a basket anywhere for any product on that site.
