I'd rather have an illuminated home button for notifications.

That won't happen, for one reason, no patent for a home button style notification. I think HP, Nokia, Motorola or RIM probably got there first.

However, Apple did apply for this patent in May 2007:

In a patent titled Secondary backlight indicator for portable media devices, Apple describes a dual backlighting system where a second backlight below the primary backlight of a display could show visual notifications of various events. The idea is to offer a low-power, flexible notification mechanism that can work even when the iPhone's primary display is off.
"For example, each indicator may have a particular color, blinking speed, or light intensity. These properties may be programmed into the electronic device by the user, or may be hard-coded or hard-wired into the system," Apple said. "Thus, when the secondary backlight is turned on, the properties of the light provided by the secondary backlight system may depend on the status of the device. Also, if the status of the electronic device changes while the secondary backlight is on, the properties of the light provided by the secondary backlight system may change to reflect the new status."

And a couple of links with the patent info.

Apple has yet to utilize this concept and it is now found on a ton of Android devices.

I don't use a case, but I would find an illuminated apple logo to be somewhat tacky and excessive.

Indeed... I bet the OP got the idea from the glowing Apple logo on the back of MacBooks. However the only reason the MacBooks have it is because it uses the very same backlight as the computers screen, so all that had to be added was a small plastic window in the alu case. For Apple to go out of their way to put a separate light in the iPhone so the Apple logo would light up would be a bit excessive, not to mention a waste of battery & space.

I think it's extra lights on the MacBooks, otherwise they waste a lot of light if it's bi-directional. Even so, they could implement the same method for a phone or iPad even though it would look very tacky.

Turn your MacBook off, go into a dark room and shine a torch directly onto the Apple log on the back of the screen.

Im not keen on a light up apple logo acting as a beacon to all the would be muggers.

Kinda shouting out , look I'm using an iPhone come take it off me !

Who knows what the battery drain would be. Just another spec to turn off in my instance.
