In agreement. As a long time windows user, I can not believe how bad Vista is. My 3 month old Dell, crashes 2-3 times a day, Office locks up for 5 minutes at a time and the assault of spyware/adware/virus fighting "features" is amazingly obtuse. (and these are just two of the issues there are several more)

I really wanted to like Vista and I really hope that SP1 improves things. In the meantime, I am on my Macs more and more and loving that experience more and more every day.

i don't want to burst your bubble dude! but haven't you learned anything from this forum?? u said 2 weeks?? hmmm make your sched flexible.. and if you don't like vista, why not use XP? it's perfectly fine!:)

All the silly things that are bad about vista can be disabled if you fool around with the control panel. The only thing worse about vista than xp is gaming..xp gaming has a bit better fps but that's about it.

Ubuntu's biggest flaws, in my opinion, are...

1. Too much reliance on the Terminal (you can use OS X without it; completely the opposite w/U)

2. Lack of a truly attractive GUI (built-in, from the start, no Beryl/Compuwhatever.)

If they fixed these two, the OS would be much more appealing to Windows users (who, let's face it, are the people they're trying to convert). The first issue is a bigger deal than the second, but the second is still relevant. Basically, they need to go a lot further in simplifying the downing and installation of applications. When they get to the point where 99% of apps can be processed the way you do so on Windows or on OS X, people will truly be able to just download a disk, burn it, and install the OS. Until then, it'll remain something you need tech support for, which limits its marketability.

actually, compliz is built in now..

There's hardly any software for Linux, it's not for the everyday user.

there's plenty of open source stuff out there..

for me at least, i need microsoft office for work, so I can't use linux for anything serious unfortunately. No, open-office isn't good enough.

man don't even get me started w/ the problems i'm having w/ my HP All-in-one device w/ leopard!

Like what? My 5180C seems to work fine, although I cannot figure out how to force it to print back and white. I think HP disabled the driver option to force more ink consumption.

I did have a problem where HPIOtrapmonitor would crash and cause the system to boot really slowly, but a driver update fixed it.

In anticipation of the macbook pros, I sold my Macbook on eBay. I was hoping to be able to get a new mbp before i actually got rid of the old one, but alas, that was impossible. I'm writing this post on a Windows Vista HP laptop... yuck.

Ya know, it's been two days so far and this really makes me appreciate how bad Vista is / how good OS X is. I mean this is seriously not a very good experience here. Anyhow, I don't want to turn this into a Vista rant... just lamenting the fact that i no longer have adium, quicksilver, a dock, iPhoto, expose, the list goes on......

But think of all the cheap rip-off features you get with Vista that make it behave like a bastardized OS X.

Hey bud I'm in the same position, sold my Mac Pro because I'm moving overseas and been working on a PC last 2 months, it's a crying shame!

Waiting in anticipation for the new MBP, I am confident it is just around the corner. :)

Seriously, OP, just put XP on it. It's more like sniffling for a few minutes, not getting a cold. :)

I use XP about 80% of the time now, it's really not that bad.

You don't like Vista? But, it gives you a nice coffee and bathroom break when it starts up, plus you get to experience all the hard work bug developers and hackers do.

There's hardly any software for Linux, it's not for the everyday user.

such an uninformed statement, you really should update your information. Its absolutely up to most everyday users' everyday use.

If you want a in place update, tell me what do you think everyday users do everyday.

1. not true, you can use Ubuntu everyday without terminal.

2. Its called Compiz-Fusion, and its builtin for most linux distroes, Ubuntu, SuSE, Fedora, or Mandriva. and you gotta admit, its much nicer and flexible than OSX 3D desktop so far.

Its funny, but unfortunately not true. unless your only need 1~2 minutes for coffee and bathroom break. hard work? I can't imagine that many computer users in the world are that high tech in order to use windows.

Vista is so bad? come on gimme a break, its 2008. You made a decision live with it. Vista is not that bad. they just need some software updates.:D

For all the vista bashers, have you even used vista? Or are all your comments just based on hearsay?

I'm a recent switcher. Bought my first mac a few days after Christmas. A 2.2 MacBook. Pryor to that I was using a dell with vista. I had zero driver issues, crashes were few and far between, mostly happening when I did something stupid. No virus, spyware, malware. Actually, if was pretty rock solid IMO. I've had leopard crash more times than vista. And the wifi on leopard is a disgrace. I can't maintain a connection for more than 5 minutes at my gf's house. Funny how it works perfect with an AEBS though. If I was getting disconnect issues at my place, the computer would have been sold by now.

Don't take this as a knock against leopard. The wifi problem is my only hate. I love everything else about it, even if it is a tad buggy at the momet. I just sucks that I have to boot into xp at my gf's place just so I can use the Internet for more than 5 minutes.

Put XP on it. I have an HP dv6500t and I put XP on it. Thing flies now ;) All of my hardware works too. Fingerprint reader, TV tuner, everything. Battery life is even better than Vista. The only difference is that the fan is on more with XP than Vista. But I can live with that.

There's hardly any software for Linux, it's not for the everyday user.

Correction: There is hardly any software available for Linux that can be purchased. There are also some compatibility issues with certain file formats (MS Office and mp3), but for the most part Linux is a totally viable and better alternative than Windows. I am not sure if you are aware, but Mexico just outlawed Windows in public schools and government. The EU outlawed Windows (for Linux) for Government stuff when it was founded, so it's not like Linux is hard to come by.

man don't even get me started w/ the problems i'm having w/ my HP All-in-one device w/ leopard!

I had a TON of problems with it too but I downloaded the new drivers from their website and it worked like a charm! I'm sure you tried that, but just thought I'd mention it because the drivers in the box were NOT leopard compatible (this was 2 weeks ago).

For all the vista bashers, have you even used vista? Or are all your comments just based on hearsay?

I can assure you its not hearsay on my part or really even bashing. Since when is stating your frustration bashing? I have two Vista machines, including my business Dell as well as three XP machines, and now three macs. Beyond that my company has around 60 Vista installations deployed.

You are only one of two people I have ever heard call Vista anything close to the term "solid" It does have some nice features, but it is full of holes. Many, many of them. From crashes to very strange lockups, to wireless problems left and right. As an example simply moving between my home access point to the one in the office, requires a disable/enable repair of the wireless card every single time. My MBP has no issues of that sort at all, it goes from home to office and instantly connects to the network every time.

OS X, IMO is so far ahead of it in usability alone, not even taking into account user interface features etc.

No way! Does the scanner work too???

To make your life on a Windows computer a bit more interesting, here's some alternatives to your apps:

For quicksilver there's Launchy
(still not as good though!)

Adium - next best thing is probably Trillian. Adium is based on Pidgin.

RocketDock
gives you a nice dock. Windows Blinds (not free) can move the maximize, minimize buttons to the left.

Topdesk is an OK Expose replacement, but it's nowhere near as solid as Expose

No way! Does the scanner work too???

That was my exact problem that it fixed. Just go to the website and download the newest drivers (its a 200 mb file if I remember correctly) After that everyone worked beautifully, especially the scanner.

1. not true, you can use Ubuntu everyday without terminal.

No, not really. I've used Ubuntu, and you spend *far* too much time typing--or rather, copy-pasting--code into the Terminal to make it a worthwhile OS for non-geeks. Even PC Mag--a magazine decidedly for geeks--said so in their most recent issue:

pc mag said:
The Ubuntu core, however, is a text-based OS—something Windows spent years getting away from. And unfortunately, you still have to use terminal input to install software or configure settings far too often, even more often than you had to use DOS command lines in Windows 3.1. Until Ubuntu can do away with the terminal for all but the most geeky uses (as the Unix-based Mac OS does), it will never become an OS for the masses.

This was exactly why I ditched Ubuntu and went back to XP. If OS X required as much Terminal use as Ubuntu does, I'd have returned my Macbook months ago.

2. Its called Compiz-Fusion, and its builtin for most linux distroes, Ubuntu, SuSE, Fedora, or Mandriva. and you gotta admit, its much nicer and flexible than OSX 3D desktop so far.

Again, this is too complex for the average user. XP/Vista comes with pre-installed GUIs that are easily switchable, if simplistic. OS X comes with one attractive GUI that isn't easily modifiable. Both are better than Ubuntu because neither requires Compiz-Fusion to look good; they're just there. C-F is an option for geeks; it's not an option for regular users. If Ubuntu is about attracting geeks, C-F is great. If it's about building a marketshare, it's as useless as the Terminal.
