I'm so use to taking pills that sometimes I just pop em without water....its a bad habbit I got and I'm trying to stop it.

Bless

i can do that with a couple of pills at once if i need to. not pleasant, but if you feel a migraine coming, better than nothing right?

it took me awhile to even swallow a pill the size of a claritin, which is tiny. i was horrible. i now have no problem, although i automatically tilt my head back for some reason, but whatever it works. :p

The Alternative

Just imagine the alternative of having to take your medications via a suppository. I'm sure that will make pill popping a breeze.

I have trouble swallowing pills too although I have no fear of choking. Just doesn't seem to go down. I put it at the back of my tongue, drink the water or milk, but the pill doesn't go down. Maybe it's the way I drink?

I now have to take a pill twice a day, and I don't know what I'm going to do. It's just a skin pill, so it's not like I'm going to die if I don't take it, and I don't think I need it. My dad's a doctor, and he gave me boxes of complimentary packs, which I appreciate, but my face doesn't look that bad and the Retin-A cream works fine.

I dug this up to get some ideas. :(

Why did your dad give them to you?

Who knows. I put that Retin-A on twice a day, and I skipped it one day, and when that happens, I look like a strawberry, and it takes about a week to clear up.

Well I don't know if you need them or not, so I would say talk to your dad and ask him if he thinks you need them.

Have you tried practicing with tic-tacs?

Although, in the meantime you need to have a talk with your dad so the both of you can decide if the medication is necessary. Inquire about alternative (perhaps topical) treatments.

I might like to point out that chewing on a pills is not a good thing. A lot of pills have membrains in them designed to control how fast the meds enter your system. When you chew it up that means all of it is getting released at one time.

The pills are designed to be swallowed whole. Mashing them up complete destroys how they are designed and means your body is getting a all the meds in its system at one time (also means the effects do not last as long)

as for helping them go down. Try taking them with a mouthful of milk. It makes them go down a little easier than with just water.
just wanted to quote this for truth.

It is completely in your mind. You swallow food that is a lot bigger than any pill you'd be given. Maybe put butter on the pill to help wash it down or something or put it in a spoonful of pudding maybe. You can do it.

The tic tac idea is pretty good.

Never had a problem myself, I can dry swallow this *huge* handful of them every morning.

I'll drink some water at some point usually fairly soon afterwards I just can never be bothered to do it at the same time.

So, I talked to him, and he agreed that my condition isn't terribly bad. He also told me that I only needed to take it for a week, which is shorter than I thought I needed to take it (5-6 weeks, which is the recommendation.) So, I feel better about it now, plus I only need to take one pill one day, then two the next, etc.

So, I'm sitting here trying to take them. I got a glass of milk per the suggestion of someone on here, and I feel like I can do it with no problems until I actually pick it up, which I then drop it like it's poison. :p

I'll get there......

I did it!

What was my trick? Putting it on the back of my tongue and drinking water. :p

I first tried it with plain water and it didn't work. Then, per the suggestion of someone on here, I tried it with milk, and it didn't work, then I embedded the pill in a spoonful of jam, but my tongue could still filter it out.

Then, I just put it towards the back of my tongue, focused on avoiding my tongue contacting the roof of my mouth, started drinking, and stared straight out the window of my backyard to calm me.

The pill also really worked well. I can tell a noticeable difference!

Now, where does my dad keep his vicodin...:)

Yeah, I try to stay away from pills and such as much as possible, so I don't have a lot of experience with pill popping.

Recently, though, I was visiting a friend who has cats, and helped her move some furniture. Now, in general, cats are not a big problem for me, but when you mix that in with a bit of exertion, breathing becomes a major chore.

My friend offered some ibuprofen, which I figured should help somewhat, since it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, so I decided to take it. I stared at the pill for a while trying to remember how I was going to do this without choking, and then finally just tossed it in my mouth and gulped it down without giving it much thought.

I think the main thing is just to swallow it without really thinking about it. You have a natural swallowing mechanism, but for some reason, pills can make you forget how to do it. So, my advice would be to stop overanalyzing it and just swallow.

Plus, I had just woken up when I took it, so I was still half-asleep, and I took it in my kitchen, where I'm accustomed to eating in there as opposed to my bedroom, where I was trying before.
