Is the USB drive you're trying to work with USB bus powered or does it have an external power supply?

Quoted from this support document.

Good idea, but (sorry) I wonder why the HDD would show up under Mac OS X and the Startup Disk preferences, when it needs to be powered via another USB or power cable, which might or might not be present during the boot up?

the one i use is from old laptop, 2.5". gets power from usb, there is no external power supply.

How old? Is it P-ATA (IDE) or S-ATA?

And to all the others that might follow this thread, does the interface have any relevance on the booting abilities?

@spinnerlys

Sorry, I think I crossed over with you on posting times. The only reason I raised it was because sometimes my own USB pocket drive will run and show up, but behave a little oddly when I only connect it to one port, for example it will just suddenly stop spinning and click at random. Two ports seems to be a must in my experience.

Ah, I understand.

I don't have that problem with my iBook, iMac, MB and MBP though, but the iBook has only one powered USB port, so one had to sue the other one or use the powered one.

The only times I had to plug in both USB cables were with Windows PCs, not just laptops, which was kinda strange.

But maybe I had luck in buying the "right" external enclosures, who knows.

So OP, try it with a split USB cable if you have it and plug both into your MBP.

first of everything I'm ****ing mad on ME! stupidly could not invest money on a simple Time Capsule! always delayed and delayed. and here is the result of being such stupid!!! :,(:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

but I must find a way to restore. it is not a joke. It'll ruin all my business which means my life!!! :(

please keep advising me solutions! i appreciate so much!!!

Surely you can just redownload the sites from where they are hosted? You must only have deleted your dev work between pushes to the production server correct?

I'm pretty sure that the Server was his computer... Hence him downloading MAMP to it. The OP is probably the only one that really knows. :)

I think that it's correct to assume that we wouldnt be at page 4 of this thread if this was the case.

I would also recommend if you have a folder of docs you are keeping secure you could also use idisk to copy them on to the net, which you get with mobile me for $99.00 a year, but the fact you couldnt afford an external hard drive and probably the cost of mobile me for a year, along with the statement I need to stop drinking ..partying blah blah to save for a hard drive shows just how good a business you had to begin with.

Another note, windows restore wont recover data and deleted files only registry and program information..

and finally, OVERWRITE does exactly just that..

My only suggestion is that the OP let us know which part of the world he is in.... there is possibility that one of us is nearby. I would certainly try to find the time to drive over with a spare external HD to see if a different one works better.

I can safely make this offer 'cause the chances he is on my little island are pretty remote. :)

I really hope he/she can get this sorted.

The last thing I wonder is whether recreating the partition table on the external drive may help. It says it's already GPT in your screenshots, but it might be worth a shot and then reinstall on the external volume again.

Code:
sudo diskutil partitionDisk disk2 1 GPTFormat HFS+ ExternalHD

Note that, I haven't tried that command myself so if it doesn't work let us know and I'll try and figure out what I did wrong, or someone else might correct me.

it is P-ATA. I plug both 2 usb to laptop from external HDD.

-------------------

for my old codes, yes files are already on server, and I can download from there. I don't worry too much about them. only problem about them is I lost my repositories. and clients often wants changes. i will just start new repositories...

2 main problem:
1- PSD files. I obviously don't have them on server. :( especially the psds for my current on-going projects. re-creating that psds would take weeks!!!

2- codes, files of current ongoing projects for some projects, I work at localhost, so i dont have any copy at server :(

so as a result, I carry on trying to recover files. If I can't have any good process today, it is better to contact to a pro tomorrow, probably I will have to send my hdd for a week or more, and i dont know how i will cover this week. :(

ps, I'm ordering 500GB Time Capsule... i will never have such problem again!

Can you get your hands on a small external USB or Firewire HDD today?

You could buy one, use it for one day and return it tomorrow or in 13 days and be able to get your money back.

Once I considered taking that route.

I mean if you already have Data Rescue, that should't be a problem.

And if you go the "buy now, return tomorrow/later" router, better get a FW HDD.

And btw, where are you located? Maybe someone could stop by, as a previous poster suggested.

unfortuneately all shopw are closed :/ i have to wait for tomorrow :/

ps, CCC still continue, maybe it will work out!

10GB took 1:30min, still goes... I have about 100GB :/

Calm down, take a deep breath and relax. Make a pizza and watch a movie or something. Or invite a girl round.

haha :) so tempting ideas, but also not possible for me... rather than these, i have an upset wife around my head and complaining that i spent all my time with computer since yesterday!!!

it doesnt sound well huh! :/

Wow, that sucks! Client AND wife hassling you now. ;)

well, wouldn't it be better if you remove the original HD and put it in a external enclosure. Put in a new HD and install the system and data recovery app. Then you don't need to boot from the USB drive and less chance of you overwriting the files on the HD too.

Yes, it would be, but the OP was trying to work with the tools he had available
Cost was a factor in the consideration too

Sort of like McGyver trying to recover data

DAY 2: (just an another unsuccesfull day, no process at all)

CCC completed as bootable disk. I plugged to usb and try to boot with usb, and guess what?! of course, again I cant see my external usb hdd at startup (alt key pressed screen)

than I booted up from internal HDD, and run the Data Rescue 3 for my external HDD. Just a silly hope, maybe CCC copied even some hidden files that I can recover sth. and I got the screen below... i clicked OK, and scanning continue, but i dont know what is going to happen

20100317-fb9e496yu9hkd218ehtrbfdhsr.jpg

If I had an another mac around, I could try to take out my internal hdd and scan from an another mac with Data Rescue, but i dont have any Mac around. Ps, taking hdd out and things like that would not mess with warranty?

ps, yes obviously english is not my primary language, and yes I'm 27... and my wife - clients are getting more angry day by day... :/

Data Rescue just completed the scanning, now I've started Recovering to a folder. As soon as it completes, I will check if my files are in... I hope they are !!!!

Edited: 1hour and ~50% completed...
