IMHO, they're going to stay away from the desktop Pentium line.

Steve Jobs was talking about performance per watt. The Pentium 4 does NOT have that from what I've seen. It is one of the hottest running desktop processors around. Yes, hotter than the G5.

Just because most Intel chips suck now doesn't mean they will continue to suck in 2006/2007. Why is this so difficult for people to understand? Ever heard of "progress"?

OK, maybe I'm crazy, but I cannot absorb this Intel thing (believe me, I tried), and here's why:

Part of the mystique about owning and using Apple products for me is their uniqueness, and that things like their processors aren't like what every Joe Schmoe has in their computer next door. Kind of likethe exclusiveness of owning a BMW or specialty vehicle, if you will. Yeah, I know they use PC hard drives and other components, but you get what I mean...

For me, the idea of having an Intel processor, which, what, 75% of the world's machines have in them? - Spoils the experience for me a bit.

Feel free to call me crazy, but it's getting less and less "fun" to be a mac owner with this transition. Ans yes, I have been through the other transitions, too, which pale in comparison.

Thoughts?

I feel the exact same way you do buddy. Owning a Mac with an exotic processor like the PowerPC is what makes our community special. It is as if we are now merging into the masses. Oh well, I trust Steve.

No worries - I'm sure Apple will continue to let you pay twice the price for similar hardware so you can feel more exclusive. And once you feel better you may discover it's really OS/X that makes the real difference.

With disk drives so cheap, I can't wait to have three separate drives on a single machine running (1) OS/X (2) Windoze and (3) Linux --- all easily accessable at boot time.

i felt the same way as iGary at first but if you think about it, its really a good thing now we will have fast laptops and pc users cant say macs are slower also i would assume intels are cheaper than ppc (thats just a guess though)

Many of you sound like your on crack. Exotic? Exotic as a three toed sloth. We've been second best for ages now. We are always waiting for the next best thing, faster this, faster that and it never comes.

A happy little exotic community isn't what Apple needs. I hate to turn away friends and customers when they are looking for a computer that does specific tasks and Apple can't provide for them. Everyone says they want the best computer and Mac possible. I never knew being the best was having poor components. Crazy talk going on this thread.

Well, Steve does have a penchant for wearing black...

Now, if I had ever seen the emperor in jeans I'd be convinced! ;)

mmm, the dark side clouds everything-

I've never been so depressed in my life... no really never this sucks bums-

Wow the recent star wars (Ep i-iii) are really coming to life... before you just skip this please read on maybe you'll gain more insight-

Let's begin by casting a few characters...

Anakin/Vader : Steve Jobs (And what Apple may become)
Palpatine/Emporor : Bill Gates (Windows Big wigs)

... okay...

Anakin is found, believed to be the chosen one... Palpatine gains power and dominion over the galaxy, under the banner of diplomacy (windows dominates computer world), slowly, Palpatine's true colors show and turn's the galaxy upside down... Anakin is growing up and and going through changes... Anakin goes the easy way, turns to Palpatine... Palpatine gets new apprentice... and then windows runs on a mac...

Now as far as I know apple didn't have any offspring, at least any that could save apple later on...

Apple was really experiencing a golden age, an age where it had it, it was moving-up...

hard to see the future is... clouded the future is... the dark side clouds everything... into exile we must go...

where is yoda when you need him?

In regard to the faster, cheaper, slower, more dinero

Apple has long been a "Status Symbol" it was different from the beige boxes... It lead the revolution in computing design- both inside and outside... now having similar insides, (Please do not start a bunch of "It's only the Processor" replies) the last thing I want on a Mac is an "Intel Inside" or "Centrino" sticker on my apple... all I want is a white/gray apple-

we all like people looking at our computers, lusting after them... this will only take away lust value-

OS X and the dsign of these machines will continue to be the two things that attach me to this platform. They eff one of those up, and I may go....
Go where? Dell? You'll be suicidal!

for now I'm fine

where will we go... we will probably stay where we are, with what we have... till we have to move...

My PowerBook and PowerMac are still phenomanal, and I am always impressed when I'm given a task through it into my computer and it performs amazingly- (I do tribute video, and other projects on the side for a few extra bucks and FCP 4 runs fantastic-)

Apple represented something to everyone who themselves purchased them... now I'm not sure it will continue to represent what it once did...

It was something, will it continue to be?

"Clouded the future is"

I agree. I will still continue to choose Mac, because it is still better than Windows, but it won't be as special any more...

Edit: and I don't like the way Steve said that the Mac is it's OS in the keynote. It's not, it's the whole thing.

So many Drama Queens!

I'm sure Apple will do just fine. In the past 7-8 years, Apple has made some incredible advances, changes and innovations, with longtime users kicking and screaming during the entire journey, until they realized the sky really isn't falling. This will be the same thing.

Bogus - there is nothing wrong with the x86 architecture. Yes apple has fed that line for years, why not - it WAS the competition. Just wait a couple of weeks and you'll see benchmarks from apple showing the exact opposite. Within 5 years most Mac users will be saying "Intel is awesome". This has all happened before and to be honest, the PPC is not THAT good. Its merely good.
Doesn't matter whether it's good or bad, Apple took the headache, timewaster, and moneypit called PowerPC and go rid of it.

Apple sure as heck will feel better now that they no longer have to worry about the PPC marketing nightmare, even if x86 creates a headache for developers.

If leveled the CPU playing field, if Apple experiences pain now -- they won't be alone, and won't have to explain it.
