i knew this option existed but didn't switch over as I assumed the recipient could view but not necessarily edit the calendar--is this possible via sharing as we both need to be able to add to or edit events on the calendar?

Yes. You can set permissions including read-only or edit. Handy for sharing with multiple family members. Wife, share & edit. Kids, read only etc.
