It's only a matter of time before one drops their phone. I'm super careful and haven't dropped one in two years. What does that prove? Nothing.

Sooner or later it's going to happen. Depending on thousands of variables it will either be lightly scratched or shattered completely. It's just the way it is.

It's only a phone & it's replaceable.

I've dropped my phone several times on various platforms and I've posted photos many times already here on this board, and this is the worst damage I've caused my phone.

(maybe one day I will shatter my phone, but that day hasn't come yet)

Do you go caseless? and have you noticed the camera getting scratched?

I'm with you. Just got my 4S 2 weeks back and and case that I put on just hid the beauty and true feel of the phone. Now I am caseless however I did order a couple backplates from SW BOX to give it a unique feel.

I just looked at my own 4s, and the lense cannot touch the surface -

I was thinking about one of these

For the battery, but I'm thinking twice about it because it will scratch the antenna for sure and then i'll get pissed.

I actually have this case, but in Red, the Mophie Juice Pack Air. The internals, when you slide the 4S in, is smooth velvet rubber. I don't expect to get scratches from this particular case. I've had it for 2 months and every week I've cleaned the 4S as it has front and rear screen protectors, and I haven't noticed any scratches on the sliver steel bandings

Oh good. Because they have that one here at the iStores. I'm on the phone a LOT, so I have to charge it twice a day. 3G browsing all day. I get 5:30-6 hours. So, my first charge is at around 11am now that I'm on vacation, I wake up early. Then it starts dying at about 5pm again. Charge again.

Until that first drop

But a drop can and will break any phone.

A case will protect it somewhat, but it scratches the antenna and makes the phone too thick. It ruins the thin feeling when you use it.

I've never dropped a phone myself. My wife does drop them all the time.

I'll try to get that wrap film thing. If I can, the only case I would buy is that battery case. At least it's useful and will make the thickness worth it.

If dropping it WILL break it, then how have I been able to wind up and throw my 4s on the ground in an otter box and have it come out completely unscathed?

Do you , guys , think that Desmay case which I just ordered will scratch the antenna band?
It seems like soo slight plastic...
What is your opinion or expierence with Desmay Slight?

I've had an iPhone 4 in an Otterbox Defender (plastic screen cover removed) for over a year now and have taken it out of the case only about a half a dozen times.

About a month ago, my dad bought a 4S. For defecations and giggles, I took mine out of its case, wiped it down, and couldn't tell the difference between our two phones in terms of wear. My 4 still looks like came out of the box yesterday, antennae and all.

I like the overall look of the iphone.. I can't see hiding it in a case. I did for about 2 months and now i'm back to going naked. I did buy a neoprene pouch to slide it in when I wanna lay it down at home or something.. The camera lays FLAT flush with the rest of the back of the phone right? I never lay it down on anything that could scratch it...

Hi new iPhone user here - for the little scratches, can't we just rub it with the rough part of a sponge like we may have done to "smooth" out the back of iPods with the silver back?

i used my iPhone 4 without a case for 1,5 years and it got scratches all over so i decided to get a case for my new white iPhone 4S. i usually HATE HATE HATE cases so ive been looking forever. i wanted one that doesnt make it look bulky and wont ruin the form factor and i finally found this one

it's from china and avab in all kind of colors and they even fake the apple logo, the iphone writing and the approval stuff perfectly ^^ it looks like its really part of the phone

wow i sound like an commercial

I'm using it caseless. So far haven't got any scratches anywhere on the device. I've got a few cases but they just make the phone ugly so I'll stick at it like this, don't really mind the back getting scratched, but what I really don't want is the front getting scratched.

does anyone just use a slip case or slip pouch ? im thinking something like sf bags.

I've had the bumper since day one on my 4s and my phone is in perfect condition

The first week i used a OEM apple bumper i noticed two small scratches, i immediately looked inside the bumper and found identical scratches on the same place, probably caused by some dirt, after i've cleaned it before applying it, i haven't gotten any new scratches since..

I think it looks like you put a bumper with a lot of dirt in it before you put it on the phone to get it that bad, but that's only what i think it looks like, i'll take your word for that it wasn't any dirt that caused it though.

Yeah I just got a black apple bumper for my white 4S. I thought it would be a little thicker / more protection, but it's pretty cheap. I didn't know about this scratch issue either. I guess ill wait to put it on until I throw some lucky labs not he sides of it.

The bumper style cases scratching the aluminum clear coat has been well documented. If you bought the case from Apple, they will exchange the phone sometimes. Dirt gets trapped in between the rubber and aluminum and works back and forth like sandpaper. Put on a vinyl or Invisiblesheild type protector on the metal band BEFORE you use a bumper or case. This is the only way to really protect it.

But a drop can and will break any phone.
Can, not will. Depends on the drop. There's no hard and fast rule despite your assertion. Plenty of people have dropped their phones without breaking them.

Go caseless with confidence. I've been caseless and no drops or regrets.
And how often has that happened on your previous iphones?
(not once on the four that I have owned)
How did you do that?
not a single antenna scratch, scuff or dent.
A single data point, i.e. your anecdotal evidence doesn't mean anything on its own. Even multiple data points from people who haven't scratched their devices don't mean anything. It's certainly possible to scratch or damage the iPhone whether any one (or more) person has done so or not. Where does this "If it doesn't happen to me it can't possibly ever happen to anyone" mindet come from?

I've been getting nekkid with my 4S since it came out
Uh, TMI.

No, the ipod Touch is polished aluminum or similar metal. It has no clear coating and polishes up really nice. The iphone 4 and 4S have a clear coat on the metal band. Polishing won't work. You would have to strip the clear coat then re-apply. Too much work.
