I really just want to unlock an iphone and put my current at&t sim that is off contract in the iphone since I have the $29.99 plan which is no longer offered, add the $5 text messaging, and then just use wi-fi with no AT&T data. I guess I would have to sign a 2 year contract and then pay the early termination fee because there is no way I'm paying $30 a month for data on a 2-year contract. I would have to raise my voice plan price which I don't need and be required to pay for at&t data when wi-fi would be fine for me. Even though my company pays my cell bill I don't want to get stuck with it if they decide to cut costs sometime in the future. I should have just bought the original iPhone after the price drop and not waited for this.

It's good to see some of you coming around. This new 3G is a joke. Look at the cost and look what you get versus the original. Factor in the software upgrade that makes the two phones even more of the same product. Then ask yourself if it's worth it to pay those prices for a little bit of a faster iphone with GPS in a plastic shell with a thicker in the middle body, cheapo plug, no dock and a possibly downgraded screen. NO BRAINER! Im keeping my original cuz this new one is budget for more money.

Instead of buying a new 3G iPhone I'm gonna download 2.0 and buy me a new case. Total cost $29.95 plus tax!

What's even better is they are allowing FAN discounts on the original plan. I bought mine June 12th.....and was on the fence about the 3G but; GPS does not mean much to me, 3g is nice and all but when there is no 3G service it goes to 2.5G; and 2.0 is just software.
I had heard this before ... have you applied a FAN discount to your original iPhone plan, or have a source for this info?

3G - much faster for those who can get it.

GPS - big deal to some people.

Plastic Shell - would actually like to see/hold one before passing judgement. BTW, I see plenty of posts on here about scratched / dented aluminum backs, plastic may turn out to be *more* durable.

Cheapo plug - ???

Downgraded screen - FUD. No evidence whatsoever except for your constants rants that the screen is changing.

i will be buying a 3G iPhone - Thank You Very Much! :)

The extra charge for texts and making those in non-3G areas pay the same for service they can't use? Two strikes. I like my iPhone just fine. All the third-party apps available through jailbreaking give me all I need. And with the App store coming? Yeah, I'm sticking with what I have.

WOW after looking at the cost of the new 3G iPhone plans, my 1st gen iPhone with the new 2.0 upgrade and my unlimited data and TXT plan is looking better by the minute!

Anybody else feel the same?

No 3G in my area. So while the GPS capability would be great I'm not going to pay $300 + $10/month extra for it. I don't use SMS so that's not a factor.

Keeping my 16 gig shiny metal back one. :)

I already have a GPS, a non-flush mount headphone adaptor and get good speeds when not in wifi area. Plus in 9 days, the same software as all new iPhones.

Its all good.

I'm sticking with the iPhone I purchased in September.

AT&T hasn't rolled out a very large 3G network where I live, so there's no benefit for that. The GPS isn't all that useful (yet).

All the software from the new app store will work on the 1st generation iPhone- so there's no reason to upgrade for that.

I would like to more space (my iPhone is the 8GB variety) but I was hoping to see a 32GB model.

At this point- the 3G iPhone isn't enough of an improvement to convince me to upgrade what I already have. If I didn't already have an iPhone and had been on the fence about buying one- the 3G model certainly would have pushed me over the edge. But as it is, I'll wait and see what the next model looks like.

Besides, I've still got more than a year on my contract.

This is from another thread I started but I think its valid here. I planned on keeping my first gen phone but why not upgrade when you can make money on thanks to Craigs List it or break even?

The post below is from this thread:

If find it pretty funny that so many current iPhone users take the time to complain about 3G price plan issues and 3G device pricing injustices when they could have made money or broken even in the process.

I'll explain.

I've always had a $20 a month data plan on my ATT account so no new incremental cost there when I purchased the original iPhone.

June 29th 2007, iPhone comes out and I'm out $600 bucks...ouch. New pricing structure announced and I call up AT&T immediately and demand my $200 back. Call gets escalated and I get a $200 credit on my bill (pays to listen to keynotes and call AT&T during moments of chaos). Apple is later kind enough to give the $100 credit and BOOM! $300 dollar iPhone.

Fast forward 11 months. Early June, start getting antsy and want to sell the old iPhone to make way for the new one before the June 10th press conference. Sell it for $450 on craigs list (probably could have gotten more if I really tried). Sweet now I'm up $150.

July 11th just around the bend, will use my $450 to purchase a 16GB 3G phone and use the remaining 150 to cover the 180 extra dollars for year 1 of 3G iPhone usage.

This doesn't seem like anything to complain about. I'd say I got a pretty good deal and it didn't take too much work to make it happen. Probably just as much effort as it takes to complain about how unfair the system purportedly is.

Just one guys story...but it could have been yours with a pinch of effort.

See you on line somewhere in NYC. Maybe not

I had heard this before ... have you applied a FAN discount to your original iPhone plan, or have a source for this info?

Maybe I can get a screenshot of my account page (minus the secure info) showing the FAN discount. I just got my first bill and I am not able to view it until the first bill cycle is over. Why would ATT allow the FAN discount if it wasn't allowed.

Every current iPhone user will have to decide, based on their individual circumstances, whether or not there is value in upgrading. This is not a "one size fits all" discussion. I'm hanging with my 1st Gen, which I bought in March, for the following reasons:

1) Checked my normal commute patterns against ATT's 3G coverage. Any point where I'm away from wi-fi, 3G is not available either. If the coverage improves in my area, I'll reconsider this point. Until then, 3G functionality means zip.

2) While the new GPS seems pretty nifty, my needs are filled quite nicely with the functionality I now get from the iPhone Maps app. No need for improvement in this area as far as I'm concerned.

3) I've already worked around the recessed jack issue by buying a few Dynex adapters (about $6 per). I put one on each of my favorite plug-ins and I keep one handy - problem solved.

4) I'm a habitual phone dropper - continually bouncing phones off the hardest floor materials known to mankind. I worry as to whether the plastic back on the new phone will hold up to that kind of treatment, even in a leather armor case like the one I have now. The metal back seems like a better choice here.

Granted, these reasons are pretty specific to me...your mileage may vary. Nevertheless, I'll be sticking with the "classic" 8gb model for now.

Yeah, so far, I'm not upgrading at all. The large increase on the monthly bill just for 3G and GPS isn't anything to me, really. I rarely use edge for data outside the home or wifi...i see no need for a 25% increase in my bill

You're a smart man (like me)!

I live on an island, so WTF do I need GPS for? 3G speed? PSSHFFFT!! This PHONE ain't my main multimedia workhorse desktop computer. What the F do I need super turbo speed for when I'm on the bus waiting for time to go by?
I pay $75.34 each month for 1000 minutes w/free nights & weekends w/1000 SMS messages thank you very much.

Awesome! Good work!

In the weeks/months leading up to the 3g announcement, I had it in my head that the new phone would be almost identical to the old one, if not exactly the same with a different chipset (vs all the ideas that were dreamed up on the forum), and that if all they did was add 3g so I could get a call while I was checking my email, I'd be happy. Then they essentially did just that, and I find I'm kind of on the fence about it, haha. The old phone looks cool with my MBP and MacPro, though I do like the black (but why, oh why, is the bezel still chrome when the whole rest of the phone is black??). As stated above, i's not a huge upgrade, but the no inbound calls while on EDGE thing is a problem for me, so I'll probably get a 3g for that reason.

AT&T had not previously allowed for FAN discounts on the iPhone, perhaps because it was already at a special rate and part of the proceeds were shipped of to Apple.

3G speed, GPS, flush headphone jack, improved speakers are all worth an extra $15 a month. I pay for 1500 text messages my bill will go up $15 which is fine with in order for me to have all of these feature.

I'm hanging on to mine for a while. GPS is nice (particularly with a Garmin add in program) and 3G is faster but heck I sometimes have to walk out onto my deck to even get a signal. Thank goodness for WIFI.
If I see that the first gens are selling for god money I might be tempted.

Yes I am aware of that; that is why I was surprised when I found out (the same time the ATT leak regarding fan discounts) that original iphones will be able to apply employee discount due to allowance of the 3G.
