Thank you for all of your input. And yes, I'm going on an LDS mission.
I might go to a year of college first though, then I'd be selling in a year from now. If it's another year older, should I still sell it? I really like idea of putting the money in a CD, btw.
One thing I forgot to mention is that I have some really expensive AutoCAD software on it, and I wouldn't be able to get it back again because I got it free from a engineering class in high school. To buy it, it's like $2000. I'm thinking that there's a possibility I might get another chance in college to get it for free, but not sure... After reading your posts, I really want to sell it, I just don't want to lose that software... But then again, I'll have to lose it anyway when I eventually get a new computer. So I guess I'm really confused now...

sell it and use the money to buy apple stock. when you come back you'll be able to buy mbp's for your whole family

You can clone your harddrive to save all your files & apps. Test it after cloning.

Who said it was the military he was going away for?

Perhaps it's prison or a mission, either or. :p

I'd sell it, why bother keeping it so you can return to a 2-year old(er) laptop with less resale value?

I vote prison... =p

Is this Roman Polanski?!?!

My guess is prison time!

I say sell. If you sell it right now you get most of your money back. When you get let out (even early:D) then if it is outdated for what you do or you want the latest and greatest _________ (whatever "IT" is) then you won't get near as much $!

Storing it does nothing but depreciate it!!!

Sell. you can keep the original hard drive and replace it with a new one or clone it to an external and you will still have the software when you get back.

sell. put money in 2 year growth. i know someone previously posted that, their response is right on the money. that laptop will do NOTHING but lose its battery and become outdated / depreciate. SELL.

I agree with the sell idea. AND keep the harddrive. That was a great idea.

How much do you want for it?

Hmm, if it weren't such a late model computer, it'll be a clear sell. It'll lose at least a third of its value over two years, though still have a few years of life in it when you get back.

Here's a though. Sell and put the money into a 2 year CD. Untouchable and reserved for the purchase of a computer when you get back from Shangrila. At that time, you could buy a new computer or even purchase the depreciated equivalent of your current computer. You'll wind up with a better computer in two years or have saved a few hundred bucks.

Sell, but 2 year CD? What's the interest in that? 1%? Sure, better than nothing, but I would rather you have fun with that cash than lock it up for 1% gain.
