We got Mavericks working on this Dell, which had been given to me, but we ran into a slight problem, which will be worked on during break. Mavericks was running so nicely on that Dell---much faster than stupid Windows 7. I was surprised, considering it's a dinky Dell desktop with a 2.93Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM. It technically has a better processor and GPU than my 2009 MacBook Pro, so it isn't bad in that way, but it's definitely a dinky box. An Intel Core 2 Duo is also an older processor, obviously. I can't imagine the performance with an SSD, so maybe I ought to get one for it.

Congrats! I got everything working (including sleep/hiberna8) except the dad gummed audio. Oh well...

Well, emphasis on HAD gotten it working. It will be figured out soon though. I'm not gonna spend the money getting an SSD for it, but I will definitely love to get it working again and be able to use it with no problems.

The audio was a little dodgy on mine, but it worked. I can't remember whether I told this to you or to someone else, but try installing the VOODOO 2.7.3 audio driver from Multibeast and restart your computer after completion. It worked for me, and it's a universal audio driver. It didn't make the best of my speakers, but it was certainly audible.

I tried 2.7.3, but the audio never outputted.

I am not sure how old your son is but I am sure he appreciates growing up on Macs and not Windows 98 SE, ME, and XP like I did.

My dad was introduced to computers through a Macintosh SE, followed by a PowerBook 150.

However just as I started using computers he had thrown both of them out and moved on to an ugly Packard Bell running Windows 98SE. Then a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP. He used that until 2011! I eventually persuaded him to splash out on a full spec 27" iMac :D He still boots into windows 7 nearly all the time for compatibility with his Access database though...

To think he started out so well...only to have to be shown the light again by me years later... ;)

Still, at least with Windows 98SE I got to enjoy Age of Empires II and Empire Earth, 2 of my favourite strategies to this day. I mostly only play Civ V these days however and all my gaming is still done on a PC, but one I custom built.

A few months ago I showed my Dad what he would have got from Apple in 2002 for the price of the Dell Dimension. It wasn't long before he nabbed an iMac G4 off eBay to make up for what he missed out on :p

It's a good thing they ended up making a Mac version of AOEII, years ago. ;)

Did it show anything in the sound prefs? I remember having to select my input. I would try each VOODOO and see which works best. (unless you actually have some specific sound card that requires one of the name-brand drivers on the list).
