Did you happen to go to college before the internet existed?

Ha! No, it was mid 90s. Laptops weren't that common though so if you wanted to be in your apartment, room, whatever doing home work then you could. But if you wanted to be around your classmates, you'd either be in the library or the lab.

Also, we did assembly on Macs (no emulators like now) and most other work was done on Unix. That could be done remotely but was easier at the time to use the lab's machines.

Wow OP if you let a bit of name calling upset you that much you're not going to get very far in life.

OP, if people keep on calling you rich, then just go on about how much moree booty you'll get because of it.

I don't know any University worth its salt that uses emulators. Waikato even developed a non-pipelined variant of MIPS designed just for teaching. For an architecture paper, we implemented the REX board on an FPGA, a MIPS processor and assembly work was on x86. Most unis seem to do something trivial like a calculator and never leave RISC land.

Haha in my first year of high school I got the "wow, what a rich guy" comments coz I had a semi-shi*tty Mid range Samsung touch phone... Everyone else had flip-tops, you see ;)

Lmao, to those of us that aren't CS majors, this looks like a bunch of gibberish with an acronym thrown in here & there.

I.E.

It's funny, I turned up at my first law lecture of the term last week and about 25% of my classmates had their laptops out (I was going "old skool" with a notepad and ball point pen :D).

Most of those guys had MacBooks. Seriously, I've never seen so many Macs in one room outside of an Apple store

I don't think owning a Mac itself makes you "rich" anymore (especially with the starting points of <15.4" MacBooks and student discounts).

Anywho, don't take the comments too seriously.

Midwestern rich journalist students... they are everywhere. :D

I'm sorry, but I need to rant. I just started college a few months ago. Apparently I'm the only one there with a MacBook air. I also have an iPhone 5 and an iPad 2. I use each device at different times, on different days, for different needs. I have been labeled, "the rich kid". I am NOT rich. I had to save for about a year to buy my first MacBook Air a few months ago, and I got my iPad 2 with my tax money at the beginning of the year. I upgraded to the iPhone 5 because I had an upgrade available, which I saved for by putting back about 50 bucks a month for a while. I work at a retail store part time.

Why do people see the Apple logo and just assume "kid kid"? Do people just not know how to save money, or what? Apple makes good products. That's why I buy their products - because I like them, and they fit into my lifestyle well. I don't spend money on cigarettes, and I save on gas by walking. Anyone else in school labeled as a rich kid? Am I the only "poor" apple user? What is going on around here? Lol. I see everyone with an iPhone, but when you have more than 1 apple product, apparently that is going too far.

Yeah, I just had to rant. I don't like being called something I'm not, when its turned into something negative, that is.

Probably just where you go to school. At my university, 90% (seriously) have MacBooks and most people have iPhones and iPads.

If I that it doesn't depend on if you are rich or not. It just depends on what anyone prefers. As being said some people likes to go every friday to bar and spends 50-100 euros just for alcohol, some people likes to go to better restaurant and spent their money there.
If you are wealthy enough you are able to spend your money on bar and restaurant as well.

If someone tells you that you are rich kid due your Macbook it's easy to understand him. He just prefer something else and doesn't see point of buying "fancy electronics".

I just prefer to spend 1200 euros on computer and wear casual shirt, casual jeans and converse.

"I am not rich enough to buy cheap things"

Since when is being rich a bad thing?

I remember kids used to call me rich like it was an insult. I promptly told them, "yeah I am... you jealous?" even though I wasn't.

Midwestern rich journalist students... they are everywhere.

When they get out of J-School and get a job in journalism, they're no longer rich. Maybe Mom and Dad still are, and still support them, but on a reporter's salary, they'll struggle to make it on their own.

Perhaps it would help if you could understand why they feel the way they do and use reductionist theory to come to the conclusion that you are "a rich kid." What they are really saying is that they are envious/jealous of what you have. Haven't you ever said something to mask what you're really feeling? Don't take this the wrong way, but alot of these people you are around aren't that long out of childhood, where mom provided clean laundry and hot meals daily. Don't be surprised to see them exhibiting childish behavior. Also, don't sweat the little stuff.

Do people just not know how to save money, or what?

Given the average household debt load, yes, I'd say that's safe to say for many people. Anyone who has anything that others can't afford yet find desirable is bound to be a target so they can feel better about themselves. It sucks to not get what you want, no matter how little you may need it.
