I make stuff last a long time... I'm taking the same attitude as I have done with my MacBook. I bought it in mid-2009, and I'm definitely going to make it last until 2014 at least (until I've finished university), unless something catastrophic happens and it breaks beyond repair...

I am not trying to talk you down, but a laptop lasting 5 years is a lot easier than a smartphone. You are certainly going to lose support around year three, at the latest. This means no new versions of iOS, apps will slowly become outdated, etc. If you are ok with this, go for it. I just thought it might be worth being informed. If you are certain you will go five years with this phone, I too would recommend waiting for the five.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone using a cell phone for 5+ years to be honest. Not sure it's possible.

5 Years? You are really going to keep it that long? Wait for 5 then.
People come into my store still using the original iPhone.

I'll probably have my iPhone 4S for at least 3 years. I want to wait for "4G" LTE to advance farther and for the 4G iPhone to have a killer battery.

Keep in mind that the smartphone industry moves fast, even faster than the computer industry. Just to put five years into proportion... Would you still be using the original iPhone today?

Definitely wait for the 5 in your case. I try to do the same thing, unless its a feature I really want...which in my case, is a slightly larger screen, so I definitely want the 5 (and hope it has that slightly larger screen :))

Once you have an iPhone, and take care of it, you pretty much don't have to buy another one outright. You just continue to sell the one you have to pay for the new one you want.
My first iPhone was the 3G...15 days later the 3GS came out, so I took it back and upgraded(model and GB) for nothing. Then sold the 3GS for almost the same price as the 32GB 4. I will more than likely do the same when the 5 comes out.

If one always waited to see what's possibly going to be new out around the corner, then one would never make a purchase at all !!

i-phone 4s Reviews

Better wait for the iphone 5...
iphone 4 and 4s has been a very big blunder mistake for the apple inc.
I phone 4 was filled with technical and software and enhancement issues and iphone 4s is again facing issues with SIRI, battery and the High Price.
hope Apple would get the best feedback and make something much affordable and better.
so better wait for the iphone 5.

Such huge blunders that they sold millions of them.

Have you visited earth, yet?

Since we're talking about economically sound decisions here... Is buying a subsidized phone on a two year contract really the cheapest option in USA? Over here in Europe, the total cost for buying a subsidized phone on a contract is always more expensive than buying the phone unlocked and getting whatever prepaid card or subscription suits your needs.

It's a bigger initial investment, but cheaper in the long run. I'd look into whether that would be a sound option before grabbing a subsidized phone and being stuck with a plan that you don't like or that is a lot more expensive than the options. Plus, you'll get a hell of a lot more than 150 bucks for a used 4S when the next generation comes out, especially if it's not locked.

I dont know about others but i only upgraded to the 4s for the 64gb model , ok the phone is a bit faster plus you get Siri and better camera/videos :) but the iphone 4 is one of the best phones in the market and if storage is not a problem the 8gb should fit good to you or since is your first personal ios experience maybe you can consider buying a ipod touch wich is basically the "i" experience without the "phone" part and cheaper ?

Hello everyone :)

I've decided I'm going to buy a 4S real soon, and carry on with the contract I'm on at the moment with Orange (and just add internet onto my current plan). It'll be £25 a month for 1GB internet + wifi hotspots, unlimited texts, 300 minutes, and I'll be able to keep my six magic numbers (which is just £10 more than I'm paying now per month).

Only thing is, I'll have to buy the iPhone, which I don't really mind since I have enough money.

I have two options... buy the iPhone from Orange which will be £660, and buying it from Apple will be £700... do you think it's worth paying the extra £40 to have an iPhone that can be used on any network?

Get it from apple and go with giffgaff

I would, but I'm tied into a contract with Orange for another 18 months and it'd cost £240 to get out of it now...

A 16gb size is more than enough for me at £499.

I pay £25.50 on 02 for 300mins , unlimited texts , unlimited wifi with 50mms and 1gb of data.

A 16gb size is more than enough for me at £499.

I have a massive iTunes Library of high quality tracks, most of which I listen to so I'll want it all on there (I don't like the idea of using iTunes Match to "stream" music), and I'll be taking a lot of photographs on it so want enough space :) 32GB is too small, so it has to be 64GB

Buy it unlocked...Because when you go to sell it you will get more money, since it's unlocked.

That's what I was thinking, I just wanted to check that's how it worked! Thank you

5 years?? Even if u wait for the 5, it will be the equivalent of a bag phone in 2017.

Not sure if anyone's really interested, but I bought my very first iPhone today!

It's a black 4S.

I'm so pleased with it, and can't wait for my sim card to come through the post tomorrow morning!

Thank you to everyone who offered constructive advice :) you're the reason why I love MacRumours.
