I have my iBook g4 and use it for hours everyday and it never complains, however since my buddy just bought a brand new macbook air i am so jealous almost thinking about not speaking to him again

I just got on the PowerPC boat after looking at the G5 towers with awe in highschool, and never being able to use one! I am still impressed with their horsepower, believe they offer great bang for the buck right now if purchased at the right price, and think that their future could be made bright with some developer love from dedicated programers like myself.

So no, I'm not giving up just yet! I just started!

Don't worry. Bring it over to his house with a DVD, ask him to play it. When he can't, pull out the iBook. ;)

i would give up a place to live to have either a macbook pro with retina display or the air and live in my conversion van with an inverter to keep the laptops charged. live in chicago and wouldnt mind sleeping in the van in winter.

This:

If I'm going to buy a thin laptop, I'm not buying an external for it. At least it's only $80, not $100.

Also, PowerPC macs are beautiful. My iMac G4 looks awesome. :D

I like the iBook G4 design. Yeah don't tell me 'but an intel mac has a good design and more powerful' with the money for the macbook pro I can get any of the dell xps which has a terrific design and you can add more power, and I still have money for rent lol

Yeah, seriously, just build yourself your own house made of PowerBooks!

PowerHouse architecture?:p

I do get frustrated on some Web sites -- loading, scrolling, content -- but I'm still okay with word processing, video conversion (AVD -- I don't need to watch something right now, and I'm usually able to anticipate in advance), and VLD/MPlayer.

We use iPads at work for a variety of things and much more powerful Macs and PCs for heavy lifting. I'll continue to use my iBook for as long as it's useful. I still use it for SPSS at home. I'm at the point though where I wouldn't buy another PowerPC unless I wanted something to collect and use for fun.

The prices on eBay and Craig's List are still out of whack for iBooks and PowerBooks. I've seen some that don't come with AC adapters and/or HDDs, broken screens, dead batteries, or that don't start up for around ~$150. Unless you're someone who wants to work on them or use/sell them for parts, that's crazy.

i have a van with an inverter to keep the laptop charged so what do i need a residence for my van has a bed and a tv all i need

Speaking from a programing perspective, a lot of the website slowness is due to lack of optimization, not a lack of horsepower. Your G4 will still kick the crap out of a Pentium 4 Mobile, for example... But even TenFourFox, who has been working hard as hell to optimize, can't deal with the fact a lot of Mozilla and it's dependencies would rather PowerPC did not exist, so the best they can do is hope to get it to build with software acceleration and such, forget about it performing fully up to par. That's quite a job in and of itself.

Not saying TenFourFox isn't optimized, it's optimized as hell compared to where it came from. But yeah, it isn't unlocking the full potential of the architecture IMO, and there are lots of reasons for this.

Have you tried Roccat? The developer there is really nice and I know him from his blogs. He is an ardent supporter of keeping PowerPC alive with his browser for sometime to come.

Webkit for Leopard runs pretty nicely as well.. Then again my PowerPC laptop is the last model PowerBook G4 DLSD which in great condition I have seen in the price range of 299-450.00 - But those who jack up the prices, especially on the ones with broken screens, dented and messed up need a lesson on pricing. For a busted up PowerBook G4 I wouldn't pay no more than 50 bucks for.

I second Roccat. My G5 doesn't need a particularly optimized browser, but on older hardware, Roccat is awesome.

Bump, I like this topic.

Yeah, I love my PowerBook G4, which I actually got last year ;). 1.67, 1GB Ram, it basically does everything I need it to. And either way, I still have a Windows Laptop (which is broken right now! :p) And I'm using my PowerBook with honestly no problem at all!

Heh. I'm with you guys! I've got a MacBook Pro and will probably one day upgrade to a Mac Pro for my tower, but my five PowerPC Macs (two of which I still use day to day) I will never sell and will continue to keep running until the day comes when something breaks and replacement parts can't be had any longer.

My PowerPC Garage:

PowerMac G5 Quad (still in use; typing this on it)
PowerMac G4 Digital Audio
PowerBook G4 Titanium 1 GHz (still in use)
PowerBook G3 WallStreet
SuperMac S900/250 (Yes, that's a clone!)

In response to your post regarding: Mac Pro - Thats if Apple doesn't axe it. Remember, although Tim Cook mentioned last year in June that he hasn't forgotten about the pro users and that something 'Wonderful' is being planned, he did NOT mention it was going to be a Mac Pro. For all we know the Mac Pro and yes, I have a 6-core 3.33 w3680, might be a completely new re-design of which I am sure it will fail as Apple is so much into the itoys these days.

I wouldn't expect it to be as expandable as the previous models. If this is the case and the enclosure is a much smaller like mac-mini or iMac type enclosure, I expect to see former Mac Pro users jump to either the current laptops or Windows all together.

This of course will mean the 2010/2012 Mac Pros will be the LAST iteration and I expect because of the 4,1 firmware to 5,1 both 4,1 and 5,1 Mac Pros will jump in resale value ALONE, while the 3,1 2,1 1,1 will reduce in price.

And yes, here is my PowerPC Mac list:

Power Mac G5 Quad - My main machine
PowerBook G4 1.67 DLSD - My trusty companion while on the road
PowerBook G4 Pismo(was G3 500) - My nostalgic OS 9 laptop and still runs Tiger like a champ - the BEST laptop Apple ever built!
Currently I am fixing up a friend's PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 2002 which is a Dual 1.0 w/2MB L3 Cache - Still a nice machine for Leopard!

If the Mac Pro dies I'm done with Apple and OSX. Apple is a big company they can do more then one thing there is absolutely no reason they cannot build a product for all their existing markets. I like the Mac community less and less everyday, OSX isn't showing signs of being what I want it to be anymore, and they have massacred most of the computers left. I'm feeling the call of the open source world really badly anymore.

As some of you are aware of, my iMac exploded and i am awaiting a replacement Mini. The problems arose when i realized that i suddenly stood there without my Intel machine in the middle of a ordinary workday. I started searching everywhere in my house for a replacement Mac. I have a PowerMac G5 2,5 GHz Quad that i was thinking of, but as soon as i powered it on i realized that the wonderful 30'' screen had hit the floor and such didn't function... at all.
Moving on i was thinking about the PowerBook G3 Lombard i have, but sadly it died during my one week challenge. I pulled up my iMac G4, but it was owned by a smoker back in the days so now it is impossible to sit next to it with the fans running.
But then i found it: My Cube G4, running at speedy 450 MHz and 512 MB of RAM with an old 15'' Studio Display... this was THE MACHINE back in the days.
I threw in some more RAM, upping it to 1,12 GB and installed 10.4 (upgraded from 10.2).
Seriously, i found out that i don't require much from my computers. I visit such few websites and i only use it to run my departments software (and some other stuff).

tl;dr: I now use a G4 Cube as my main, and it feels great.

B.T.W, does anybody know anything about hissing cubes? My cube has some kind of electronic hissing going on while it's powered on.:apple:

The Cube is a great machine! Is the Cube stock or upgraded? can you elaborate on the sound? is it continuous or intermittent? if it is stock, with no fan present, I would suggest you confirm everything is correctly plugged in... also, you can try to take the core out and turn the Cube on, to see where the sound comes from... pay attention to the VRM, it's one of the possible sources.
You can always head over to the cubeowner.com, If anyone can help you with that is them!

Hello, the Cube is completely stock (except for the added RAM). Everything seems to be plugged in correctly.

The sound is some sort of a electrical "hiss". It sounds terrible, but as soon as the system idles it goes away. A part of me thinks that it's the HDD doing it, but im not sure that "hissing" is a sign of a bad HDD. Listening to it reveals nothing as it is very loud.:apple:
