It's getting to the point that I have all but given up listening to music. I can't stand the radio. It's all crap. It's either stuff I have heard 5,000 times before or it's sucky pop music.

I like groups like Pink Floyd, early Genesis and Rush... bands that might have some short songs but also had some songs that went for 10-20 minutes.

I'm not into "jam" music like Phish or The Grateful Dead.

Anyone have any ideas?

XM radio?

Either XM or your iPod. Frankly if you prefer classic rock then its your iPod.

Very very few radio stations play songs longer than 5 mins, and in the case of 4:00 to 5:00, the songs are cropped down to no longer than 3:30.
"You know the rules and so do I" :D

why not just turn off the radio and use your own tunes? you could also go the satelite radio/internet radio route. pandora's pretty good for a little while too.

no one's forcing you to listen to something you don't want to listen to

just saw Mick Jagger doing a tribute to Solomon Burke on the Grammys ... "Everybody needs somebody to love"

Awesome 3-4 minutes of music

He sounded terrible. I didn't expect awesome but he struggled. Best he did was that he moved around well for a 68-ish year old.

Has he really sounded good for the past 10 years. At some point these acts need to know when it is time to give it up. Even Babs sounded like crap.

As for pop songs going 3-4 minutes, the usual radio single is 2:30 - 3:00 and has been for at least 40 years.

So are all post 1980 groups making 3-4 minute songs?!!

I can't take it any more!

Seriously?

Prog rock may be on the decline, but it's far from dead.

Try Queensryche, Dream Theater, Marillion, Fates Warning, Spocks Beard, Coheed and Cambria, and The Mars Volta. That should be good for a start. Just don't expect to hear any of them on mainstream radio. Try last.fm, Pandora, or some other streaming service.

Arcade Fire?!!

That's it. I'm giving up FM and gonna mainline sports talk from now on.

I'm happy with the Arcade Fire win. It's about time someone with a decent amount of talent won a big award like theirs'. Yeah, they're not everyone's cup of tea, they're not even really my cup of tea, but they were something new and I can appreciate it when a fresh "newer" band wins something.

Gotta disagree here, the 80`s were a total wasteland of garbage.
I admit there was a lot of ****** music in the 80s if comparing with the 70s. But not all of it was new wave - would you say that Slayer and Metallica were garbage? Both of those bands started up in 1981, I think.

XM radio?

Mike Oldfield, Amarok. The most expensive song on iTMS. One song = one album = a bit over 60 minutes.

10-20 minute songs of guitar filler for 5-15 minutes?

No thanks, but to each their own.
