For everyone that is clamoring for a new iMac, what is it you think this new one will do for that the current one can't, even more so the iMacs from the last 3 to 4 years?

Be significantly less "glossy" screens. That is one of the major top 5 complaints over the last 4-5 years after Apple got rid of matte screens. I don't think they are coming back with a matte screen, but if elminate the gap between the glass and the LCD panel reflections will be somewhat less pronounced.

It will be substantively faster than the iMacs from 3-4 years ago also. Likewise graphics on par with Mac Pro from 2009 era also on the higher end models.

For everyone that is clamoring for a new iMac, what is it you think this new one will do for that the current one can't, even more so the iMacs from the last 3 to 4 years? I would like to know what about the current iMac cant satiate your current desire for power?

If I expect to not upgrade my computer for 3-4+ years (Currently have 2008 MBP) than I don't want to start with dated tech. I'd like it to be closer to 'top of the line' upon purchase.

What would concern me the most about buying a 2011 now IF there is a new model just around the corner is that the older model will be left behind sooner by Apple in terms of what is supported by operating system upgrades. I am very happy with my 2011 iMac which I got as soon as it came out, but when there is something very luring in a future OS that no longer supports my computer then I will probably get whatever is on offer at that time.

Will there be a new range released for those that can wait?

Based on Haswell etc...see below.

Or will the 'new' October ranger be updated with 2013 tec?

Sorry to leap forward in time again, but I would expect many will wait for Haswell, and may still be in the process of saving for their new mac.

They cannot make an iMac in 2012 with 2013 tech.

If you can wait for 2013 you are probably best off in terms of buying for longevity.

You could always wait to see if the latest round of rumors, now for October, pan out but the rumor mill's track record as concerns the iMac has not been exactly stellar this year so far has it?

A retina display on an imac does not make sense.

326 ppi at 8" viewing distance (retina) looks exactly the same as the current 27" imac (109ppi) viewed at 24".

Even if an imac was 220ppi then you'd need to be sitting 12" away from it for it to have any relevance.

Sure there'll be an iMac in 2013....Haswell. It will probably come out in August.

This year, the window for an iMac release is closing. Chances are any 2012 iMac will have to come out by mid-to late October. After that, it's not likely any iMac will be released, given Apple's history.

I'd say it's more than likely the 2012 iMac will be released by the end of September.
