OK, how is it possible that my 10 year old Hakintosh works perfectly with Catalina and every previous OS version, but this official piece of sheet does not?!
Everything works well with Mojave, but Catalina and Big Sur latest beta simply won't sleep by its own. If I force it to sleep it awakes soon and stays awake during the night.

I tried everything I could find on the internet, I reinstalled the OS completely from scratch, safe mode, I even broke Fusion Drive and started it again, tested multiple combinations with partitions and volumes, tried with and without my data, even clean OS without any 3rd party app won't sleep.

Do I need to go back and stay on Mojave on a one year old machine or what?!

Does the time it wakes up happen to be the same as a reminder in the Reminders app?

I do not know when it wakes up, I just see that it is awake every morning. Also it does not go to sleep by itself nor with hot corners. As for Reminders app I do not use it at all, never opened it so there is nothing set up in there.
The problem is this is happening with clear OS install.

Ah ok, in that case I’m at a loss, sorry. Mine would wake up on its own but I eventually figured out that it woke up for notifications from Reminders. (Still shouldn't be happening but I've made peace with it…)

You mention having reinstalled and reset a bunch of things, I’m guessing you also disabled “Wake for network access”, “Enable Power Nap” in Energy Saver preferences? And “Allow Bluetoohh devices to wake this computer” in Bluetooth preference pane (under Advanced)?

I disabled Power Nap and Wake For Network, however Bluetooth devices are turned on by default so I can use my mouse or keyboard to wake it up. This was my setup since always, it was never a problem. I also tested it with this option turned off, the same happens.

Does your computer go to sleep when using Hot Corners? Or by itself after the time you selected in Energy Saver?

I just tried it now and it didn’t work; I never set this up before (I have audio hardware connected to my Mac and need it to stay awake unless I directly put it to sleep).

However, I don’t have a Hot corner option for “sleep,” only for “Put Display to sleep”, same for Energy saver, only have “Turn display off after…”. But enabling these, and unchecking “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off,” it did not go to sleep. But it sounds to me like this won’t necessarily sleep the computer always, only after a certain period of time after the display has gone to sleep? Not sure. For you, did it used to go to sleep automatically?

If I do Apple menu > Sleep, it does go to sleep.

If you go to Activity Monitor > Energy, do any apps have “Preventing sleep” showing “Yes”?

Well you are right, Apple naming is made to be idiot friendly so the user does not think about it too much. But things go like this: display goes to sleep after a period you set, and then after 30 to 40 seconds the system hibernates. I have Focusrite Clarett 4 Pre and I can clearly see TB led going off, also I hear mechanical drive and fan inside iMac go off as well.
I like Hot Corners as I do not need to do anything but put the mouse in the lower left corner and I am good to go.

At least this is how it is supposed to work, it worked like this since always and Mojave is the last OS that works this way.
With Catalina Hot Corners sleep/hibernate does not work it only turns off the display while computer works all the time.
This means HD is spinning all the time, the same with cooling fan, basically the computer is on all the time.
When putting it to sleep manually from the Apple menu or by pressing CMD+OPT+EJECT it goes to hibernation/sleep, however I often find it out of sleep just with the display turned off.

There is two ways to know if it was sleeping after you click a mouse to wake it:
1. After you click the mouse or the keyboard the display does not awake for 3 or 4 seconds, after which the WiFi icon turns on and searches for network.
2. Your TB/USB audio card led will clearly show it is off until you click the mouse or the keyboard which will then get online

As for Activity Monitor, well it would be simple but it does not show anything that keeps it awake, in Preventing Sleep column everything says NO. :)

Yes, can confirm that sleep/hibernate from hot corners or from the timer in Energy Saver does not work at all here, like in your case. It does stay asleep (until a reminder comes in) if I sleep it from the Apple Menu or through Alfred.

I also have clear confirmation from the audio interface (which is how I discovered the issue to begin with, it would click on by itself).

I have wake on bluetooth disabled (due to cat) so I use the power button to wake it. But other than that it sounds like our settings are mostly the same, which would leave Catalina as the culprit. (Edit: I have the 2020 iMac which I suppose is another point of difference.)

Honestly I’m surprised but not shocked that this is broken in Catalina, it seems there’s no shortage of issues in this OS.

Well that would just be too easy, right! :)

Thanks. I just installed fresh Big Sure Beta and migrated my account, well for now everything works well. :)
Very strange as I did this few days ago and then Big Sur did not sleep as well. Windows is a mess, aesthetically and in many other ways that is why I purchased this fancy looking outdated hardware just to be able to have Mac OS without too much hassle with a Hackintosh.
The old saying goes: the more things change, the more they stay the same. ;)
