Yup had same situation 4 screens replaced too. Two under apples care two outside, again had to fight hard to get them replaced free outside the apple care. I have a late 2012 machine. Waiting on new iMacs hoping they will not allow dust to get sucked in by the fans. Definitely a design fault and would not recommend anyone getting the current machines because of this.

It's more or less production fault than design fault. It's the LCD panel that was not sealed properly, letting the dust intruded between the glass and diffusion layers underneath.

I agree that it's far more likely a production fault than a design problem. While I did have my Late 2013 iMac's LCD panel replaced for the issue, it never occurred again on that machine nor the 2017 iMac I replaced it with.

How many people have had this issue permanently (or very long-term) fixed by getting replacement screens? I'm trying to weigh up whether it's worth the disruption of getting a repair if it's just going to eventually reappear in a few months. Thanks.

I had the problem on a new 27 inch machine Here.
After the screen was replaced it still looks good today, no smudges. Hope it stays that way. 👍

Humidity varies between 35 to 45% (with a humidifier).

I had this happen on an older iMac (~2009) and the screen was replaced under warranty. Spouse's too. I was running a humidifier (ultrasonic) that puts out very fine dust with the water vapor (the filter doesn't catch it all). I can't diagnose for sure but I suspect that the fans were pulling dust in through the screen somehow and it was accumulating enough to cause this.

Haven't had the problem recur with my 2015 iMac though.

For old iMacs that has been out of warranty coverage, the repair shop would open the LCD panel, clean the dust, and seal it back properly. It's a labour intensive fix, but it will last quite long and the issue would not come back.

Still no stains on my 27 inch after Apple Care replaced the screen. (Fingers & Toes Crossed / knock on wood)
I still believe my screen was defective or putting it together at the factory was defective in some way. Over 2 years now in the same room condition and no stains. I will not buy another 27 inch until Apple gets this defect corrected.
Good luck @StephenLebon on your new iMac. Is the new iMac going to be brand new or refurbished?
Seems that yours is in good shape because you vacuum it :) please tell this to people

since my 3rd eplaxems t screen 3 years ago I’ve not had the issue again. I definitely think there was an issue with the way the screen was glued together which allowed the fans to suck in air. If anyone is having the same issue I would show this thread to the appe store people and get a replacement screen.
