Hello there,
Thanks for all the answers regarding my question that I posted yesterday. Ended up with buying an SSD.
Now. The iMac (5K 27") is planned for delivery at the 31 of July.. isn't that a VERY long time?

Why is it taking so EXTREME long time?

Best regards,
Lowe Lilliehorn

I think it’s more than a wrecked global supply chain. I’ve ordered 12 MacBook Pros in June and I’ve seen delays of 1-5 days. I’ve had 3 27” iMacs on order since June 8 with no movement.

I believe that there is an update imminent but probably just a spec bump and not the ARM redesign coming later this year. I don’t think we’ll see movement on it until the upgrade is made public. My guess is that we’ll see that after WWDC at this point. Probably Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Are existing orders typically cancelled or given the comparable model when a new product is launched?

Based on past experience, I’ve seen Apple upgrade the machine to the same level machine of the new spec, I’ve seen them offer to cancel and reorder, and I’ve seen them ship the old model anyway, even after the delay, thus requiring you to return it and reorder.

So what you all are saying is that there is an upgrade imminent and that my iMac 5K will be cancelled? Or is that wrong?
I mean, 5K, 32GB RAM, 512 SSD, Radeon Pro 570X with 4 GB vram is quite up to date, is it?

No one knows when the new one will be out. People are just guessing.

There could be all sorts of reasons for the extended delivery time, such as COVID-19 and supply chain issues, but also maybe because of increased demand.

There might be a few people that were waiting for WWDC for a new iMac, which didn't happen, so they just ordered the 2019.

There could also be people that wasn't necessarily in the market for a new Mac, but after the Arm news at the WWDC, they now want to get what is most likely the last new Intel iMac, so demand increased.

If you need a new iMac right away, I suggest looking at the Apple Refurbished Store. They might have the configuration you are looking for, and you will get it much quicker, and a little cheaper than new.

100%

I am guessing based on what I’ve seen in the past. This could very well be COVID inflicted. That I ordered 3 iMacs on June 8th, before the most recent rumors and well before WWDC, and they haven’t budged at all is suspicious.

On the other hand, base model iPads are taking a long time to ship, too, and no one suspects an update there.

I see the July 31 date for the middle config; the other two are July 10:

Yeah. So this is what Im going to do, Im going to give Apple a call about this delivery. I hope it is late b/c COVID and not b/c there's a new upgrade! Anybody else having a thought about the delay? Thanks! :)

Lowe

Usually, it means an update is imminent; unfortunately, we have had these long delays for many weeks now, many (including myself) thought we would see an update at WWDC and nothing happened. So I am afraid it's just a COVID-19 supply chain issue. I wouldn't bet on an update anymore. We might not even see an update to the Intel iMac before the ARM iMac arrives. Though there have been rumors about a refresh of the Intel iMac.

Short summary: I have no idea.

There is a lot more evidence pointing to a supply chain issue than a refresh on its way. The 12.9 iPad Pro is in August now if I want to order it now. I am thinking about waiting as there might be a new one in the September/October event if it will take a month to get my iPad.

It's an unusual situation. The best solution would be neither cancelling nor supplying something different (which may actual be illegal since you didn't get what you ordered), but send you an email and ask what you want.
