I have no idea why you found any improvements in the crop tool. I found exactly zero improvement on my end.
I don't either, and maybe it's just a matter of perception. Other than the fact that it's a bit jerky, it does what I need. In fact I'm finding that in practice I'm quite satisfied. For the operations that take significant amounts time (import, export, etc), Lightroom on the retina iMac is fast. Outside of Develop I have no problem, and Develop works well enough the way I use it.

Count me as one who doesn't have many problems.

I can notice stepping if I move say an exposure slider rapidly, but frankly I tend to use numerical entries, or click at places in the slider bar, and the change in image is fast enough for me not to notice any issues. It's only when moving the slider quickly I see anything, and that doesn't interfere at all with my editing.

Showing intermediate steps isn't really necessary for what I do with photos; it could be black for all I care.

And I can't find any crop issues. What should I do to test that, if further data is needed?

And maybe I missed it, but does it matter what sort of preview options people chose in LR? I'm using 2880, highest quality.

how frustrating is this?
A photographer who buys the new maxed out version of the iMac, his pictures look amazing on the new screen but Lightroom is very slow and sometimes very unresponsive when using the sliders. I've seen the beachball more often in lightroom the last week than ever in my life!!!!!!
HOW is THIS possible ADOBE???

Call Adobe and let them know. Only then they will change it..

Thanks

Hi there I just purchased the iMac 5k and was wondering how much improvement there would be! Great read!

yep, thats pretty bad. I'm secretly hoping that future upgrades for Lightroom + Yosemite fix things a bit because otherwise I might have to move over to Capture one which uses GPU

Did Apple show up to Adobe's doorstep a year ago with a prototype retina iMac and Yosemite and said "here, we're going to roll this out, please update your apps to fully support this"?

No, but according to Service Reps they don't even have an iMac 5K now to test or improve performance.

new update

has anyone tried the new update that was pushed out today on their 5K?

No, but Apple is promoting performance, so its natural to expect a brand new computer to be able to handle an existing App. Its not Adobe's fault, per say. When I buy a new computer, I expect my apps to run faster not slower

And it does for many things: importing, exporting, building previews, browsing photos in the Library module. It's the Develop module that's problematic, but even that is certainly useable.

I don't have a 5k iMac, I'm reading this thread and others to make a determination if that's something I want to take the plunge on.

So its encouraging to hear some reports that LR is not an egg sucking dog on the new iMac :D

In general, I would agree with you. But what Apple did is a brand new technology that never existed before. At the same time Adobe made a mistake to write a software that has 0 utilization to the GPU (as far as I understood and correct me if I am wrong). They should've expect to encounter these issues sooner or later.

I really need to update my iMac 5K article to reflect findings from a couple of months use but I've been too busy. Apologies.

In short, the iMac 5K is a fantastic computer. The only thing I don't love (as a computer) is that it's sometimes got quite a loud fan. As a LR machine, it mostly runs great, although, in my experience (therefore anecdotal only) the rotate/crop tool is stupidly slow, as is the Slideshow module. As the rest of the machine performs admirably, this tells me that it's likely a LR issue, and perhaps a Yosemite issue. Essentially though it's a great machine.

My gut instinct is that Adobe has some work to do in getting their app fully ready for high res machines.

Not at all. I was initially quite disappointed, but in the end I get things done just as quickly, and the amazingly crisp, clear interface easily makes up for any deficiencies.

The iMac 5k (maxed out) is slow with lightroom, no doubt about it. I use Motibodo a keyboard that basically moves the cursor (and adjusts sliders) to certain locations inside of LR so I am pretty quick. In 4k and 5k mode its sloowwww. Below 2880 its faster than my i7 2.6 Mac Mini.

I also have my clients pick out pictures using LR. In full screen mode (F) at 4 or 5k it is completely unusable unless you want your clients sitting there for hours. It's kinda ridiculous.

LR definitely needs to be worked on, with saying all that, I did keep the 5k. I am constantly adjusting screen resolution though.

Hey Guys,
I am a professional user of LR and PS and am lucky enough to be able to see and talk with some of the Adobe engineers on the LR and PS team. I have been considering a 5k iMac and asked them about issues in the LR develop module. They can never say much about future releases so they are always careful with words. However they did acknowledge that the new 5k screen is a beast for LR to push all those pixels. LR does slow down with certain develop actions. You can see on the adobe forums they admit it there. They did say they are working very hard on LR 6 and are confident we will all be happy with how it performs on the new 5k screen. They couldn't give a release date for LR 6 but did say it was for sure NOT this year. I have a lot of confidence in the adobe team. They know the issue and are working hard to fix it. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long.....

Cheers,
