I'm going to disable power nap but still allow it to sleep. Let's see if this is the source of problems.

ok so its confirmed power nap is responsible for the crashes. Now I've re-eanbled powernap but disabled screensaver. The default settings is pointless. Its set to trigger after 20 min but by which point my mac display is already off. 1 day later no crashes yet.

I'm not having a 5K iMac, but a mid 2011 iMac, and I have this Sleep Wake Failure problem since many months.
I will try disabling screen saver and Power Nap.

I just got a late 2015 5k iMac w/ 8GB and replaced it with OWC memory: 2x16 + 2x8. Crashes nightly. Power Nap is on. I don't mind turning Power Nap off, but when I use Rember to test the memory, it consistently fails. If I run 2x16GB it passes, 2x8GB passes, but 2x16 + 2x8 fails. Any others having trouble mixing memory sizes?

You need to be sure that you bought the faster memory chips. The new iMacs for 2015 require faster memory. Be sure that OWC sent you the correct memory.

Mixing chips has always been a hit or miss proposition. When I mixed eight gigs of Apple memory with 16 gigs of crucial memory it failed.

My late 2015 27 5k 3.3 with 512 ssd was having sleep problems since I got it. Then it randomly started to restart on its own. Then graphics problems started. I took it to the apple store and couple times and finally they just returned it.

This is what my screen looked like

So the solution to my problem is an audio interface I have.its a USB 2 Native 'instruments Rig Kontrol 3.
If I have that plugged in and my Mac goes to sleep then after an hour it will reboot itself and say there has been a problem.
If I don't have it connected then this does not happen.

This is tested for months and happens every single time.

Got tired of doing workarounds that ultimately fail in time with Sleep Wake Powernap BTMM Fsiling or randomly working. I finally did a command R wiped the drive. 10.11 was immediately given as the choice to reinstall from there. Reinstalled and only migrated Apps, Documents and Data. I did not migrate OS System Setting and Network. Let's see how this goes for a few days.

I wish people would stop pointing at branded ram or GPUs or whatever else it is.
It's an OS X issue Apple need to sort out.

If so, why did I only have the problem with a particular memory kit ? Removing it would solve the problem, and I didn't have the problem when I got a replacement kit from Crucial. So in my case, it was a ram problem.

After clean install, this POS El Crapitan still cannot PowerNap, Wake On Network and Back to my Mac. I've even reset that Airport AC to factory defaults and set it up again. Still no go. So when you prevent sleep, Mac OS reminds you that you are using more energy. Well DUH because the crappy OS cannot even do its job properly so its wasting power because of lousy unreliable junky OS.

Interesting thread.

We had the same issue with one of the machines in the office and ultimately sent it to Apple for looking into as we had followed all their procedures and guidance via telephone support. When it was at the genius bar, the engineers said I had a faulty motherboard and replaced it.

When we brought the machine back into the office, the problem was fixed and 2 months in - it's developed the exact same fault as of yesterday. Needless to say, this is very annoying.

UPDATE (15th March 2016): went to Apple again and they replaced the logic board AND the display panel, they say this should fix it.

i'm having this issue with a brand new iMac. it's infuriating. specially i noticed it will crash multiple time overnight when i'm not in the office. it goes sleep, crash, restart, sleep, crash restart.

Check the seating of the RAM. For me, this was key, and solved my problems

I think this is somehow more related to the usb.
It's 100% the USB device of some kind. Perhaps even driver related to it. I haven't had a single issue whatsoever since removing the device that was causing all my problems. Native Instruments Rig Kontrol 3 . That's was 8 months ago.

Are you using multiple user accounts on your Mac ?

The "Sleep Wake" problem seems to be a low level kernel IO problem (not only USB) that occurs more specifically when the computer goes to sleep while more than 1 user account is currently logged in.

Interesting thread.. I had this problem a few months ago but then it seemed to be fixed (don't know how actually). Until the 10.12.1 Sierra update - my iMac started crashing every night again (rebooted itself and presented the sleep/wake failure message).
I added Crucial RAM to my iMac but it looks like there isn't this one and only cause to this problem. Obviously to me now, it is a combination of macOS, RAM and maybe USB devices (I'm only using a Steelseries cable mouse). Pretty annoying.

I have the same problem. I click the sleep option from top left menu, and then if within a minute I try and wake the computer by click by mouse or keyboard, nothing happens. I have no USB devices plugged in.

My brand new imac 5k seems to wake up from sleep without any issues however, my external Samsung 4k display refuses to wake up. I have to switch it off\on for the imac to re-detect the display. I'll try workaround as see how i get on.

I have just one account. I removed the usb device (I was using a samsung wire to charge my headphones) and my problems stopped.
