You appear to be the one getting your knickers in a twist.

You're also misinformed if you think Haswell only brings better battery life.

Oh really?

Looking at benchmarks between 2012 MacBook airs and 2013 there are very slight differences which are not going to be noticed in the real world. Some benchmarks even favor the 2012 over the 2013 so again please tell me what benefit you think you are going to get?

It is pretty well known there are minimal performance gains in haswell, and the biggest benefit is about a 50% increase in battery life.

Please show me what performance benefits are gained in the real world going to haswell

To those who say that Haswell is irrelevant to desktops, well, given that the iMac is an all-in-one, not a desktop, it'll definitely benefit from the lower operating temperatures Haswell offers, which could bring improvements in power management and even thinness, which seems to be a huge priority for Apple. On top of that, there's the better graphics performance integrated into the Haswell chip too. And I could definitely see the day, a few years down the road, when Apple offers a new version of OS X that'll only run on Haswell machines, just like Mountain Lion can't run on the initial slate of Intel machines Apple produced.

Yeah since iMacs have dedicated graphics I'm sure users will see huge benefits from the integrated graphics chip lol

Bought my 27" a few weeks ago and have been using the heck out of it. No regrets at all. It's one beastly mother. :p

You're not missing much. Desktop Haswell is hardly better than Ivy Bridge. Retina Display on a 27" iMac... Now we're talking!

went ahead and took advantage of some savings and bought my 27"imac last night. Love it. Big upgrade from my '08 13"macbook unibody

Last time I checked the iMac still requires power and some of us do care about energy savings.

Ok sure, but you would probably save more money by turning the computer off when not in use.

Kind of silly to wait a year to upgrade your computer that costs probably less than $50 a year in electricity when left on continuously. I mean if you're really concerned about saving maybe $20 a year in electricity then perhaps you shouldn't be buying a $1,500 or $2,000+ computer...?

Please, tell us, why are haswell processors needed HERE and NOW?? What benefit do you think you're going to get from them?
People act as if Haswell is going to be the only new thing here. What about Nvidia's new graphics per example huh? Such an upgrade will be a sizable performance increase.

Then again, Haswell will bring a significant upgrade in the GPU, so it's not wrong to wait if one's needs are graphic intensive.

Ya since haswell has minimal performance upgrades and mostly has to do with battery gains I'm sure so many people are concerned with having haswell in a desktop machine....

This is more a case of people thinking they need something that they really don't.

No, people are so caught up in thinking they need something that is going to have no benefit to them. Last time I checked there is no battery in an iMac to benefit from the haswell processors.

But omg what is taking them so long why don't they have haswell in the iMac yet I've been waiting for two years for this update.

Guess they are just in denial and don't want to admit they could have bought an iMac a year ago that will offer practically the same performance.

I didn't say anything about waiting for a year. That's something you made up yourself. There's also the on-board graphics and other upgrades Apple could add. As you might know the iMac consists of more than a CPU chip.

My thinking is that if Apple can eliminate a discrete graphics card, it will because that would save on space. Likewise, if it can use the lower operating temp of the Haswell chip to make the fan a little bit smaller or reduce the size of the airflow channels, it will. Anything to make the iMac even thinner and lighter. You can debate the benefits of thinness in an all-in-one, but Apple has already made it clear that thinness is the direction the iMac is taking.

I would like to see a higher quality display or at least a more consistent quality display. One that doesn't need to be swapped out 3-4 times in order to get a decent one.

Wifi

It's about time wifi gets improved...its overdue...its one of the weakest link in any computer system...but especially using it to stream video with your bluray player or AppleTV etc.
Too bad other mac mini's etc cannot be updated.

I know its been asked before but are there any benefits to owning an iMac with Haswell other than bragging rights?;)
Up to 50-100 % faster* H.264 encoding, if you use the newest AVX2 optimized version of the x264 encoder.

Up to 2x faster* Quick Sync video encoder and decoder units (AirPlay needs less power).

Iris Pro 5XXX IGP with improved OpenCL and OpenGL support.*

2nd generation built-in USB 3.0 controller.

Better power management.*

...and so on.

+ Mavericks (OS X 10.9.x) is 100 % optimized for the new Haswell platform.

The * means: Compared to Ivy Bridge platform.

can we get a decent displays? instead of 5% of more power?

What's wrong with the display now? Besides nothing?

Have you ever seen an iMac display? Last gen or current gen? There is nothing like it on any other 21.5 or 27" display in the world...

Obviously not including displays that (themselves) go for $2-5K

Yea that was a useful post.

This latest round of updates will see the inclusion of 802.11ac in each new Mac.

But, even with 802.11n...using "newer" Apple hardware, AppleTV, and Apple Airport....the experience is flawless, and not in need of improving.

FUD.

What your backwards post says is that the Displays are great as they are....but I've read about 20 people who had to swap theirs at Apple stores due to defects.

This could be a repeat of 2012.

September 2013:

  • new iPhone announcements
  • + anything else related to iPhone such as iOS 7

October 2013:

  • new iMac and MacBook Pro (and maybe even Mac Pro) announcements
  • + anything else related to them such as OS X Mavericks

You might be the first person to have thought of this / pointed it out!

Not before September 7th

It seems pretty clear that we're definitely not going to see any new Macs before September 7th (the back-to-school promotion ends on the 6th).

The only real question, I think, is whether Apple considers updating the rest of the Mac line to Haswell to be worthy of its own publicity cycle or not.

If they do want the Macs to have their own publicity cycle, my guess is that we won't see them before October 1st (to give 3 weeks for the iOS announcement hype to die down), but that announcement might also include the actual release of the new Pro.

If they don't think the new Macs are worthy of all that hype, I could see a press-release announcement possibly as soon as September 17th...
