I know its been asked before but are there any benefits to owning an iMac with Haswell other than bragging rights?;)

It's not Haswell that I care about. It's updated GFX cards and hard drive specs that I've been waiting for in the top 21.5" and base-line 27".

new iMac

Here's another vote for 27" retina. Also Thunderbolt 2 presuming it can run x8. And I'd pay extra for an upgradable GPU card, though if the low cost thunderbolt chassis go anywhere that might be the way to get upgradable GPU (for high parallelism CUDA cycles, not actually running a monitor).

Bought my 27" a few weeks ago and have been using the heck out of it. No regrets at all. It's one beastly mother. :p

If you didn't, get AppleCare. I made the mistake of not doing so and repairs cost a cool grand, about 2 years in.

Does it run hot (like my mid-2011 does)?

Personal hopes: Faster RAM clock speed, PCI-based SSD, Fusion Drive (using PCI SSD/1TB drives) standard on the 27", 1GB VRAM (675MX?) available in the 21" high end, 2GB VRAM standard on the 27".

All of that is more important than Haswell, although the new sleep management systems would probably be a nice touch.

I would love, love, love for Apple to make the RAM on the 21" user accessible again, and perhaps even make the PCI-based SSD user upgradable. Little chance of that happening though.

K keep crying for your haswell update, those of us who don't need to have a pissing contest over "best CPU" have been enjoying our machines for a year.

Please, tell us, why are haswell processors needed HERE and NOW?? What benefit do you think you're going to get from them?

This is what I like to call butt hurt. How's your last couple of days with your machine before it gets outdated?

Just noticed that Amazon is sold out of the base-level iMac and it doesn't state that new stock is expected.

I see a mix of available and unavailable on the Best Buy website at various stores for both 21 and 27. Not sure if that's how it's been through the summer or not, so don't want to read into that too much.

You want to know what the difference between Haswell and the current model iMacs?

I will have a newer better iMac and you will have older model iMac.

Nope wrong don't have an iMac good try though.

This is what I like to call an uneducated guess... Have to resort to trying to name call and make fun of people when you don't have an argument. Like i said, don't have an iMac. However those out of us who do have iMacs have been enjoying theirs for a year while you sat around waiting for your "better machine"

I could care less about what you think you're going to have because in real world usage haswell performance is NOT better than ivy bridge anyway. Check multi threaded benchmarks and you will see instances where ivy bridge beats out has well.

Sounds like you're just a pissed of consumer who wasted a bunch of time waiting for a useless update.

Couldn't agree more. I almost feel this way for the rMBP - though haswell in this case might bring significant improvements. I returned my 15" early 2013 in may and have been waiting for 'a better machine' ever since.

In the iMac's case, I don't understand the urge.

A moderator should check in. Who's this tool bluntly attacking other members pretending to know the truth about what other members feel? Another day, another troll.

We can only wish that he enjoys his new machine. Out of everyone out there, he's probably the one who deserves the one crippled with early adopters bugs.

The 2012 iMacs stay cool all the time from what I can tell. I know what you mean as I have a 2011 27" iMac and it gets hot.

Let me understand this. You first imply that you have been using an iMac for the past year by stating "those of us ... been enjoying our machines for a year" and then you chastise someone because they went by what you stated which was not true in the first place. Why are you trolling this thread.

Won't an $80 new hard drive fix your immediate problem?

A dead hard drive doesn't mean that you need to pay from over $1.3k to $2k or more for a whole new system.

Get a new drive, and if the fixed 2007 doesn't meet your needs buy a new 2013 Apple and sell the current one with the fixed hard drive.

And to offer an opinion, if you were happy with the 2007 Imac before the disk failed - the 2013 one won't change your life. It may be a bit snappier, but nothing stupendous.

thanks for the input, i do feel my 2007 mid imac slow now after installing mountain lion & the 4gb ram doesn't kick enough for today, the thing is i m now thinking of the 27" base model as i at least have the option to upgrade the ram in the future.

RAM is simple and cheap to upgrade in earlier Apples - and can make a huge difference in how fast a system feels.

Apple's business model is to make the people think that they need a new Apple for a faster machine. If you don't care how much money you "tithe" to Cupertino - you're a perfect fit for their model.

You should at least replace the keyboard, though. Find one with a working "shift" key.

...or spend $89 on a Kingston v300 120Gb SSD and extend the life of your 2007 machine like I did with my 2009 C2D whitebook...
