i really dont know , i never did downgrade

but you need to install OS9 first , to update the firmware anyway

the imac wont boot from the mac os 9.2 disk neither will my beige power mac g3 is there too much ram in the machine?

should i erase hd using os 10.2 then try my 9.2 cd?

nevermind i tried a different disk and it booted now do i set up the partition inn os 9?

ok i set up the partition in osx 10.2 and now the imacs running os 9 in a 40 GB partition and the other is 15 GB Do I install the firmare update now or after osx is intalled?

you boot from OS9 and then install the firmware update ..then install osx otherwise you risk a unbootable iMac

yes but tell me something how much RAM is in the system and is it the original bondi blue imac? mine isnt and i know it can handle it and if not i can downgrade. But thanks for your opinion ill keep that in mind.

I've just updated my 'new' G3 500mhz DV SE. Can't help you with OS 9 but can give my experience of getting to Tiger...

Mine was more or less untouched from when it was bought - hard drive had never been wiped in it's 11year lifetime and was still running OS 9.0. I've never used OS 9 (I'm a 'newskool' Apple user!), but wasn't too bad with PC's back in the day so suspected it wouldn't be too hard.

Firstly, if you are running less than OS 9.1 you need to upgrade to 9.1 (I was at 9.0!) - download the correct 9.1 from Apple here for free if needed - the update you need will depend on the version you are currently running - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1387

You can then install the updated 4.1.9 firmware from here - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1283?viewlocale=en_US
Make sure you follow the update instructions.

I then obtained a copy of OS X 10.4 (Tiger), rebooted the machine (hold c key at the 'chime') and completely wiped the drive during the install.

It runs pretty well - much better than I expected in fact. I've given mine 1GB RAM, but looking at the Activity Monitor, if all you are using it for is a bit of word processing, iTunes and general light use, 512mb would be enough. I have disabled Dashboard and Spotlight via disabletigerfeatures (Google it) and have installed ClickToFlash. If you want a decent word processor get a copy of MS Office vX.

Hope that helps a bit.

that help a lot thank you! But at this time I have decided not to install tiger because I didn't want to upgrade the firmware for vintage reasons. So what I have done is I installed os 9.0 on the 4 GB partition and osx 10.2.8 on the remaining 15 GB's. everything runs great! Im not updating this imacs firmware because I might get a g4 imac or a snow imac g3(in which for the snow I wil update firmware) but the os 9 update I will use for I use Os 9 as a gaming os.
once again thanks for your help:D:apple:

A bit of a late post..

Being that I still use G3, G4 and G5's here at the house along with my linux boxes I have found that: http://mac.oldapps.com/ is a great resource. Mactracker is great and all, but it can be a serious pia to find what you need.

Hope that helps.
