Fixing up Rev A iMac

Hi Arkious,

I have read about your restoration of your Rev A iMac. I was wondering where you located and acquired a flyback transformer for it. My Rev A Bondi Blue has blown its flyback transformer, and I would like to fix it.

Thanks for any reply.

Ooo that's interesting, my account has been closed :-S

Will see if they can reopen it or anything, if not al see if I can get them re uploaded

On a side note, which is quite a coincidence, I almost purchased an LCD to have a full conversion go at this again haha literally 2 days ago

sorry missed your post, I got it from America on eBay :) they didn't list it for postage to the UK but I got in touch and paid the extortionate amount but it worked brilliantly

Oh score! I really wanted to see the photos of the screen and what not.

I have uploaded the photos again, but i will start to put them back in place in this thread in time, i don't quite have time at the moment.

In the mean time, if you want to look at the photos here is a link to the Album :)

Did you convert your G3 into a hackintosh? If so, total props! It looks nice!

I did, until the dog killed the CRT driver board when he jumped on it :-( lol

Oooh. Not fun. Dogs = Mac death. Nah, love dogs. Sweet and loyal. Just got a 2008 iMac with GFX problem, seems stable now, but whenever I get the chance, it is getting a reflow.

We'll the iMac was a bit fun and test before I took on my main power mac g5 project, I'm in complete love with this finished product :) had it finished a year now but just installed a watercooled gtx 780 ti 2 days back so there's more love!

Hi Arkious,
I'm doing the same with my strawberry iMac G3 tray-loader, obviously i wanna keep the original CRT.

I'm using an Intel Dual Core Atom 330 D945GCLF2D motherboard, actually connected via VGA to the CRT. It's working only at 800x600@95hz, don't know why isn't working ad 1024x768@75...

The problem is that everytime I restart the machine i need to disconnect and reconnect the VGA cable to the motherboard to get the image on the CRT.
How do you resolved this? Is it possible to force OSX to recognize the CRT and force the resolution?

Here's the pic of working CRT

Arkious,

I find what you did here amazing! Its beautiful to see these once amazing machines light up with the power and internet ready capabilities again! Its a real shame your dog killed the screen. Sad to say thats exactly why i have no pets. I have 2 slot loaders. My favorite is the Tangerine at 400Mhz but the indigo 350mhz i posted about a month or so ago would be awesome to get going with new hardware. Sadly i know computers but not electronics to pull something like this off. Kudos to you man! See if you can get that CRT fixed or replaced! Long live the imac g3!

Hello! Great to see someone doing the same and i eagerly await the finished thing. Sorry on the long delay in getting back to you, I haven't been online in some time. OS X can't use VGA properly, but HDMI/DVI works on boot so all you need is a converter. It basically hangs on boot until it detects the monitor and then continues.

What you can also do to force a new resolution is use SwitchResX, which is a free program that i use to 'overlock' my Asus PB278Q monitor from 60Hz to 85Hz by forcing OS X to run an alternative resolution. You can do the same for your custom resolutions. Its a trial program that you can create a single resolution with then uninstall it as it saves the resolution, or buy it

Hope that helps :)

To be honest, you will be able to work with the plastics easily if you want to install say an LCD, however working with the CRT and original PSU is much more difficult. If i ever come across another G3 in my travels, i won't hesitate to switch its stuff over. I have a fully specced out (and might i add overlocked to 800mhz ) graphite g3 which i use as a bit of a toy every now and then. still doesn't live up to the project build tho.
