Hello @TheShortTimer - I have followed your instructions and it does not work... :( burn the DMG to create an actual install CD/DVD and then mount the disc so it's visible in Finder and/or Disk Utility, plug in the USB stick and then in Disk Utility, click onto the USB stick, select Edit from the Disk Utility menu and choose Restore

I think I see where you're going wrong. :)

You're choosing the drive itself instead of the mounted DVD. You need to select the "Mac OS X Install DVD" in your list of externals when it asks you which volume you want to restore. ;)

You also need to make sure the Partition Scheme is Apple Partition Map, GUID/MBR is for intel Macs and some very late PowerPC Macs. Newer versions of macOS do not support partitioning drives as APM AFAIK. I'd just burn the DMG file itself to a DVD-DL using Disk Utility, that way you do not have to bother with Partition Schemes and what-not.

According to Apple themselves, Apple Partition Map remains available to users in Disk Utility right up to macOS Ventura. In this thread, the OP used Disk Utility in Catalina to set up an APM configured HDD for their iMac G3 - a thread that you were a participant of. ;)

They do not require a DVD-DL to burn a Tiger disc. They'd only need to do that if they wanted to create one for Leopard - which requires dual layer DVD's. A single layer DVD R would suffice for Tiger. :)

Hello, again, thank you so much for your help and again, nothing works after reading your advice.

Ok this is what I had tried so far:

- Generic Flash Disk Media is my 64GB USB Stick
- Optiarc DVD is the CD ROM Drive

1. Selecting TIGER2 (USB Stick)
2. Clicking on "Restore"
3. Selecting "Mac OS Install DVD" with CD icon
4. Getting an error
5. Trying with selecting "Mac OS Install DVD" with hard disk icon
6. Receiving an error as well

I have not idea whats going on and why this is not working...Do you have any other advise ?
Thanks a mill

@zcarm2013 Is the USB drive open in any of your Finder windows or any other programs? It's worth checking that it's not open in any of them or programs and then trying again. Failing that, it could be a permissions error.

Edit: also, is the USB drive formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

Hi, @TheShortTimer - Yes I checked, nothing is open. USB stick - Get Info - unticked"Ignore ownership on this volume - Yes, its formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

No problem, I will google in order to find some more information regarding this topic. Thanks a mill for your help !!!!

Update: I did not get it to work with this "Restore" thingy. Nothing worked. Now, what I have done is the following:

I have another iMac G5 Core 2 Duo with which I also had installation issues. Then thought, I try to install Tiger 10.4.7 Server on this one and voila, it was installing and booting perfectly.

I then took this hard drive out and cloned it with Carbon Copy Cloner and put the 2nd copied hard disk into the G5 iSight and yeah, its working and booting up to the Desktop. The only issue now is, that before its really booting up, the blinking icon with the question mark and face comes up.

It then stops blinking and the entire system is booting normal. If someone knows how to fix this question mark face issue, would be great. I assume there is another issue with this G5 iSight.

I then, of course tried it one more time to install with the Tiger 10.4.7 Server disk, but it did not even recognise the disk anymore on the blue screen(but before it did).

Anyway, so far (both G5's) are working and I thank you all very much for your enormous help !!!

I'm delighted that you've managed to get it working. I don't understand why you had problems with Disk Utility as this has been reliable for me. Next time use a FireWire cable with Carbon Copy Cloner and connect both machines together. This will save you needing to remove/swap the hard drives.

Congrats. :)

Hi, Thanks for your great advice...Yes, unf. I tried that so so many times here on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Mid 2015) and nothing works at all. I definitely will purchase a FireWire cable. Thanks again for your help!!!

What will you do with a Firewire cable on a Mid 2015 iMac?
No Firewire on iMacs since 2011 models.

One can use the FW800-to-Thunderbolt dongle which Apple sold for several years.

Sidebar:
FireWire 800 on Macs continued with the 2012 unibody MBPs (the 13-inch models being sold through late 2016); the 2012 Westmere Mac Pros; and the late 2012 Mac minis (sold until late 2014). As you noted, only the 2012 iMacs (and 2012 MacBook Airs) lacked FW800.
