get used to the minimalist design apple has embraced 🙂 it's so beautiful...

granted, it first looks strange to have all that white space as if something would be missing. however, would you rather have the ports in front, or have a selection of totally useless leds in there? a big white space is "art", a statement.

by the way, which apple store? haven't you noticed that many apple stores look pretty minimal, too. some of them could be described as "gigantic grey box with an apple logo", and that doesn't look odd at all. monumental? maybe not, but great statement anyway.

Minimal???? The look of the new cinema displays is much more minimal than the look of the iMac, which is what I was getting at. The look of the is more of a "chunky around the bottom" To me large spaces are not "minimal"

And as for the white spaces being art.... I got tons of art around my house to sell then. White Walls Galore!

I picked up a 17" iMac a the Apple store last week. Initially, it does look kind of off. But with a little time, the design just seems right. It works. I like it much better than the previous generation of iMacs.

I don't know why some people have such a problem with the "big white" area. Sometimes actual product styling has to be adapted to the overall design. Apple probably did not have a choice unless they wanted to make a "thick" computer or one that had a large abscess on the back. Also, if you compare the design to the CRT iMac or eMac, you will notice they both had a larger area below the screen, granted the area houses the Optical Drive and the speakers and that does break up the area, still not hugely different in overall design. I guess Apple could have went with eMac style speakers in front and maybe the round speakers would have broke up the front panel a bit, but I guess they were going for more of an iPod inspired design then an eMac design. Whatever they were using for a guideline on designing the new iMac G5, it ended up tying the iPod, eMac and iMac into a "family" of products and I like that. It helps brand awareness.
